being present for the small and
intimate wedding ceremony of
Marie Mostow to my good friend
Perli Pelzig, the Israeli talented
artist.
It held another unanticipated
bit of appropriateness too. We
had, as editor of The Southern
Israelite, been responsible for
the Shiddach so to speak be
tween Pelzig and the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center which
brought him to Georgia in the
first place, via our then exclu
sive Israeli columnist, Anita
Engle, and Ed Kahn, the com
munal executive.
Actually the wedding was ori
ginally planned for the study of
Rabbi Epstein. Then it was felt
there was special appropriate
ness in having it in the chapel
of the new Ahavath Achim Syn
agogue. Pelzig had created the
decorative window designs for
the chapel itself and they are an
artistic triumph in their novelty
and beauty.
He also created the modern
candelabra which grace the al
tar of the chapel. These are bold
ly fashioned from birch wood
and decorated with those charm
ing bits of colorful baked enamel
perfected through the coopera
tion of Marie and Perli.
And he also created the color
ful enamel squares, each with a
different letter depicting a dif
ferent Commandment, which
mark the Ten Commandments
doors to the Ark itself—and the
unique Eternal Light fixture as
well.
Pelzig's contribution to the
chapel was duely highlighted in
the personalized marriage ritual
speech by the ceremonial master,
Rabbi Harry Epstein, who pre
sided.
He it was who gave us this
opportunity of being so close to
a bride. Even so we stood closer
to the groom and nearest to the
audience. If we had it to do
over and had a choice, we’d
have selected the pole at the
rabbi’s right so we could have
gazed without being out of line
into the raptuous faces of Marie
and Pelzig. As it was the profile
view is a picture we shall long
recall.
Harry Dwoskin, Joseph Gross
and Joseph Friend were com
mandeered extemporaneously —
and quite willingly, to help in
the delicate job of chuppah-
holding up.
Leo Katz, who is one of the
deans of American artists—cer
tainly of Jewish artists in this
country—and who has lately
taken up residence in Atlanta,
had come to the wedding too, as
a guest.
To him fell the privileged last
minute assignment of escorting
the charming bride up the aisle
to the Bimah and symbolically
"giving her away" to Pelzig.
Rebbetzim Reva Epstein had a
very special part in the wedding
festivities too. Learning at the
last minute that neither the
groom nor bride had family in
Atlanta, she had forthwith adopt
ed them both and magnanimous
ly set about with the details of
a reception after the ceremony
as her personal and gracious
gift.
She had called upon Mrs. Si
Rosenbaum and Mrs. Hyman B.
Morris, former presidents of the
Sisterhood, for assistance. With
in a few hours, Srochi Hall was
festively ready for the wedding
guests—complete with tierred
cake, a sweet table, "gehockeda”
