Reform Groups’ Commission Sees
Segregated Housing as Northern Poser
The problems of segregated
housing has been termed “as
serious a challenge to Northern
communities as is segregated
schools to the South.”
This view was expressed in a
pamphlet issued by the Commis
sion on Social Action of Reform
Judaism. The report, “Integra
tion on Trial in the North—a
long hard look at the Hyde Park
Section of Chicago,” was written
by Mrs. Jeanett Fields, a Chica
go community worker and form
er reporter.
The Commission represents the
principal bodies of the Reform
Jewish movement in the United
States and Canada, the Union of
America Hebrew Congregations,
the Central Conference of Ameri
can Rabbis, the National Federa
tion of Temple Brotherhoods,
the National Federation of Tem
ple Sisterhoods, and the Na
tional Federation of Temple
Youth.
I. Cyrus Gordon of New York,
commission chairman, pointed
out that, “housing is in the North
what the public schools have be
come in the South—the testing
place for democratic freedom
and full equality.”
Mr. Gordon declared that,
“This report is a reminder of
the unfinished business which
awaits us in each of our com
munities and which confronts
the synagogue and the church
with an unavoidable trial—the
challenge of effective social ac
tion.”
The report was published as an
outgrowth of the democratic
statement of principles adopted
by 3,000 delegates representing
560 Reform Temples in the West
ern hemisphere at the 44th Gen
eral Assembly in Toronto, Cana
da of the Union of American He
brew Congregations in the
Spring of 1957.
The resolution declared that,
“the Union of American He
brew Congregations herewith
pledges its support to the prin
ciple of equal housing opportuni
ties for all and urges the mem
bers of its constituent congrega
tions to follow non-segregated
practices in the selling, buying,
and leasing of residential hous
ing. By such action, we will con-
tribute significantly to the
strengthening of democracy, to
the moral health of our com
munities, and to the realization
of the prophetic principles of
our faith.”
The resolution recognized rac
ial segregation as a “problem
which does not apply to one sec
tion of the country only, but
that presents a moral challenge
to every community in America
with varying forms and inten
sity."
The pamphlet is available at
the headquarters of the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega
tions at 838 Fifth Avenue.
Jewish Religious Rights
Fully Guaranteed in
Italian Public Schools
ROME, (JTA) — Aldo Moro,
Italy’s Minister for Education,
underlined this week that the
government’s ten-year school ex-
p a n s i o n program guaranteed
Jews their full religious rights.
Stressing that the religious be
liefs of all students would be re
spected in the public schools and
that non-Catholics would be able
to obtain exemption from Cctho-
lic doctrinal courses, he pointed
to the fact that though the Jews
were a relatively small minority
in Italy, public school evamina-
tions were postponed to prevent
clashes with Jewish religious
holidays.
