Algeria Jews Criticized
For “Passivity” Toward
Murder of Envoys
ALGIERS, (JTA) — A repre
sentative of the Jewish Agency
in North Africa today blasted
the “passivity” of Algerian Jews
with respect to the kidnapping
and murder of two Jewish Agen
cy representatives in this coun
try. Word of the murder of the
two Jews, who had been kid
napped by Algerian rebel forces,
was received here recently.
The Agency representative, M.
Markuse, expressed his "shock”
that Algerian Jews had “done
nothing to try and save” the
murdered men, Jacob Hassan and
Rafael Ben Guerra. He further
lambasted the local community
for its failure to send condol
ences to the families of the dead
men after the murders were
made public. At a meeting of the
administrative council of the
Zionist Federation of Algeria, M.
Markuse charged that Algerian
Jews had “not shown emotion
and had a passive approach to
the entire affair.”
M. Narboni, president of the
administrative council, denied
M. Markuse’s charges. He said
the Zionist Federation was per-
paring to take an active part in
securing the release of the two
kidnapped men, but had refrain
ed at the request of the Israel
Embassy in Paris.

N.Y. Registration
in Jewish School
Shows Increase
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Jewish
school registration in New York
City has shown a marked In
crease in the last twelve months,
it was announced today by Na
than A. Levine, president of the
Jewish Education Committee of
New York.
With a current enrollment of
145,000 pupils in all types of
Jewish schools, the combined
registration has advanced by
5.7 percent over last year. A
breakdown of schools by type
shows: afternoon elementary
schools—6.1 percent increase;
all-day elementary schools—8.4
percent; afternoon high schools
—10.9 percent; all-day high
schools—14.3 percent.
“The last ten years have seen
a dramatic rise in Jewish enroll
ment,” said Mr. Levine. “Total
registration has risen from 60,
000, an advance of over 100 per
cent. All-day schools climbed
from 8,000 to over 30,000. The
number of Jewish schools jump
ed from 500 to almost 700.
“We find especally impressive
the large gap between New York
and the rest of the country in
terms of intensifying Jewish ed
ucation. In New York, about 25
percent of all Jewish-school stu
dents are enrolled in all-day re
ligious schools; in the rest of the
country, that figure drops to
about 3 percent. In New York
only about one-fifth of Jewish
school enrollment is in one-day-
a-week schools; outside of New
York, the proportion is about 60
percent
"We are proud that we are
blazing a trail for other com
munities. We are equally proud
that our far-sighted citizens are
spending over $17,000,000 an
nually on Jewish education. It is
only by fortifying the bulwarks
of Jewish education that we can
achieve our goal—the happy
child in a secure family belong
ing to a respected community,
all proud of their American
Jewish heritage.”
