Women Rabbis Sexi?
From NEW'S WEEK
With not a single candidate in
sight, Miss Jane Evans, brisk,
cheerful, and 50. has nevertheless
been churning up an amiable stir
for the ordination of women rab
bis The executive director of the
National Federation of Temple
Sisterhoods (an organization of Re
form Judaism) likes to point out
that “Reform Judaism’s very birth
was a break with tradition. It’s
a paradox that it is afraid to come
to grip- with the problem of wo
men rabbis." Although no woman
has ever been ordained, a handful
including Jane Evans have
conducted services.
Miss Evans’ campaign for wo
men rabbis is only one of the
many causes she has labored for
in 2 years as executive director of
the NFTS, an anniversary which
she celebrates next month. Recent
ly, sitting bolt upright behind her
huge desk at NFTS headquarters
in New York, she explained her
rather staggering variety of in
terests by confessing that as a pre
cocious 10-year-old she chose a
motto for herself—“In an age of
specialization to live a life of diver
sification." She made it clear that
she has been happily living up to
it ever since.
Promise: Jane Evans was born in
New York. Although her parents
were soon divorced, her agnostic
father promised his devout Jewish
mother to give the girl a thorough
religious education. He sent her to
a Reform temple and gave her a
exhaustive academic education as
well. Jane was graduated from Cin
cinnati’s Xavier University (she
had chosen the Roman Catholic
institution for the excellence of its
philosophy department). In 1933
^he joined the NFTS because "Hit
ler was sounding the death-knell
of Judaism in Europe.”
The steadily growing globe-
girdling organization of some
100,000 women devotes itself to "a
sort of spiritual Point Four pro
gram" in many Jewish and human
itarian causes. These range from
religious education to highly suc
cessful fund-raising to the creation
and maintenance of a 5.000-volume
Jewish Braille Library. (The vol
unteers who transcribe the Judaica
into Braille have also produced
many a Catholic catechism and
Protestant prayerbook.)
Projects: An indefatigable or
ganizer, public speaker, teacher,
and conductor of religious ser
vices, Jane Evans says: "I’m a rare
ly fortunate person because I get
paid to do what I find enjoyable.”
At a recent luncheon, in honor of
her 25th anniversary, congratula
tions poured in from around the
world on the success of her diver
sified projects. But perhaps the
most welcome and apt of all tri
butes came recently from Rabbi
Maurice N. Eisendrath, president
of the Union of American He
brew Congregations (Reform), who
said: "Jane Evans would make
an ideal rabbi.”
