Born in Poland, he was a mem
ber of the Shearith Israel Syna
gogue. He was a retired sales
man.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs.
Lawrence Kolbin, New Haven;
sister, Mrs. Eva Aronoff, Atlanta,
and three grandchildren.

HUC to Honor
Rabbi Friedman
With DD. Degree
Rabbi Newton J. Friedman of
Temple Emanuel, Beaumont,
Texas, has been notified by his
alma mater, the Hebrew Union
College, Jewish Institute of Re
ligion, Cincinnati, Ohio, that he
will be awarded the honorary
degree, Doctor of Divinity, at
the Founders Day Convocation
on March 28.
Rabbi Friedman, a native of
Cleveland, graduated “cum
laude” from Western Reserve
University and did graduate
work at that school and at Har
vard University. He was or
dained as Rabbi at the Hebrew
Union College in 1934. In 1955
he received his Doctor of Theol
ogy Degree from Burton Sem
inary. He is a member of the
Social Justice Commission of the
Central Conference of American
Rabbis and served on the Board
of Trustees of the Hebrew Union
College Alumni Association. He
is the author of the Isaac Mayer
Wise sermon in the current
Union of American Hebrew Con
gregations “Sermon Book” and
is remembered for his rabbinate
in Macon with Beth Israel Tem
ple.

The Adas Yeshuron Synagogue
has formed a prayer group for
the young men in the congrega
tion, ana the grfcup known as
“The Young Mens’ Minyan” will
hold their first weekly meeting
Sunday, March 29, which will be
followed by a breakfast and dis
cussion.
John Weens of Aiken was the
guest speaker at the recent
Perenial Garden Club meeting at
the home of Mrs. J. B. Marks.
Mrs. David Silver was co-hostess.
It was reported lhat Mrs. Max
well Estroff and Mrs. Marvin
Estroff would place an entry for
the club in the artistic arrange
ment class of the Spring Flower
Show.
Hadassah will hold its annual
spring dance March 7 at the
Masonic Temple.
Elliott Serotta was the princi-

upper recently at the Masonic

William S. Benson
William S. Benson, 58, of At
lanta, died February 21. Funeral
services were held February 23
at Blanchard’s Chapel. Rabbi
Jacob M. Rothschild officiated.
Interment was in Crest Lawn
Memorial Park.
Mr. Benson, a machinery brok
er, w,as a native of Brooklyn
and had lived in Atlanta since
1950. He was a member of the
Temple.
Surviving are his wife, the
former Louise Brodie; two
daughters, Mrs. Howard Noch-
umson, Dalton, and Judy Ben
son, Atlanta, and five brothers
and three sisters, all of London,
England.

lanta Jewish Community Cen

Aim and Purpose of Young
Judaea; How To Present Pro
grams; How to use Program

Other Sources; How to Moti
vate; and The Future of Young
Judaea. Israeli song and dance
workshops will also be includ
ed. This Institute is being plan
ned Under the direction of Her
man Popkin for the Atlanta
Zionist Youth Commission and
Mrs. Leon Goldberg, newly ap
pointed city director for Young
Judaea. Others on the planning
committee include: Miss Edie
Klein, youth director of the
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter; and Mrs. Max Hearshen and
Dr. Jack Rousso, co-chairmen
of the Atlanta Zionist Youth
Commission.
Sessions will be led by Her
man Popkin, Mrs. Edward Reis-
man, Dr. Rousso, Mrs. Hearshen,
Miss Klein, Mervyn Berrin, Mrs.
Bruria Falik, and Miss Lori
Krick.

Meeting To Feature Leo Katz
The 89th annual meeting of
Gate City Lodge of B’nai B’rith
at the Mayfair Club, Monday,
March 2 will feature one of the

J. L. Schwartz of Charlotte,
who has been active in civic
affairs for the past ten ypars
has been elected to the board
of directors of the Charlotte
Chamber of Commerce. Mr.
Schwartz was Man of the Year
in 1953, and is presently serv
ing on the City County Plan
ning Commission. Mr. Schwartz
is manager of the Charlotte
Linen Service, which is a branch
of the National Linen Service
Corporation with home offices
in Atlanta.
Mrs. Ida S. Matz of Atlanta
spent the past weekend in New
Orleans.

ville was a visitor ot her daugh
ter, Miss Vivian Harris, in At
lanta last weekend.

recuperating at home after seri
ous surgery.

of her continued illness at her

Congregation Beth Jacob will
hold anr' Oneg Shabbos at 8:30
p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, at the Syna
gogue. Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Polan
will sponsor the event in honor
of the forthcoming marriage of
their sister, Sally Polan, to David
Miles.
Rabbi Emanuel Feldman and
Cantor Phillip Rosenblatt will
lead the congregation in prayer.
The Beth Jacob Children’s choir,
under direction of the cantor,
will participatein the singing of
Sabbath hymns.
Youth and adult groups of Beth
Jacob are getting ready for the
approaching convention season
for Southern Orthodoxy. The
Southeastern Youth Conference,
to be in Savannah this year on
March 27-29, will be attended by
a number of Beth Jacob teen
agers. At the same time adults
are making plans for the South
eastern Synagogue convention
slated for Memphis on April 3-5.
The Beth Jacob Brotherhood
will sponsor a bingo, mah jong
and card party, Sunday, March
8, at 8 p.m., in the vestry rooms
of the synagogue. According to
Eugene Weinberg, brotherhood
president, admission will be $1.50
per person. Refreshments will be
served. The public is invited.

lanta, Leo Katz, according to
Ted Fisher, president.
Mr. Katz, an outstanding au
thor and philosopher, is an in
ternationally known artist. He
has lectured at Cooper Union,
Columbia University, the Metro
politan Museum, and on many
of the Major campuses across
the country. His works of art
are on display in numerous mu
seums including the Museum of
Modern Art, Metropolitan Mu
seum, Brooklyn Museum, Smith
sonian Institute, and the Libra
ry of Congress.
Meyer Levin, the well known
author, met Mr. Katz when he
was in Atlanta last year, and
wrote as follows: "Drawing to
gether the two mysteries of the
subconscious soul and the vast
universe remains man’s greatest
task. And this mystical, specula
tive quality pervades the work
of Leo Katz.
The subject of Mr. Katz’s ad
dress will be, “Cultural Forces
in the Struggle foe Survival.”
The meeting will also feature
the installation of the new offi
cers and trustees of Gate City
Lodge, headed by Edward N.
Glaser, the newly elected presi
dent. Dinner will be served at
7 p.m. and the program will be

Not Authorized to
Raise Funds in U.S.
NEW YORK, (JTA) — A
spokesman of the Jewish Agen
cy declared this week that the
Agency’s Committee on Control
and Authorization of Campaigns
has not authorized the Tel Aviv
University to engage in any
fund-raising activities in the
United States.
The Committee, consisting of
representatives of the Council
of Jewish Federations and Wel
fare Funds, the United Jewish
Appeal as well as the Jewish
Agency, each year releases a
list of authorized pubic fund
raising campaigns for Israel.”
