Festival OfPurim Begins At Sunset, Monday, March 23
Purim, merriest of Jewish
‘ holidays, begins this year at sun
set, Monday, March 23. v
The word Purim means lots
and refers to the manner in
which an ancient Persian bi^ot,
Haman by name, decided on
that day to carry out his plan to
get rid of the Jewish people. The
story is to be found in the Book
of Esther in the Bible.
Haman’s wrath was kindled
by the refusal of Mordecai the
Jew to bow down to him or his
effigy. Sensing that the Jewish
faith was hostile to dictatorship
Haman planned to eliminate the
Jews.
How his plot was thwarted
through an act of patriotism on
the part of Mordecai and by the
courageous intercession of Es
ther, Mordecai’s cousin, who be
comes Queen of Persia is the
story line of the Biblical vol
ume.
The joyousness of the holiday
observance, which expresses it
self through song and prayers
of thanksgiving, derives from
the relief felt each year over
the triumph over tyranny. Gift
giving and giving to the poor
also mark the day.
In Purim synagogue observ
ances, which often take place on
the Sabbath nearest Purim, rab
bis deal in their sermons with
the need to combat bigotry and
despotism. The Esther story is
read from a special scroll, called
megillah. In religious schools,
pageants and plays rehearse the
story and at homes special feasts
further underscore the jolly
spirit of the day.

Union Prayerbook follows:
‘'Strengthen us to combat preju
dice, injustice and oppression
when they strike not only
against us but men of whatever
race or belief. Let not divisions
of blood and faith create dis
trust and strife. May we strive
unceasingly for the triumph of
truth and right over falsehood
and wrong. Thus shall we be
united in a true covenant of
brotherhood and peace. Amen.”
In a Purim statement, Rabbi
Maurice N. Eisendrath, president
of the Union of American He
brew Congregations, declared:
“Purim is the time to ask our
selves what role we have played
in the incessant struggle against
the inroads of group hostility
and personal superciliousness.
May all men be stirred to re
move horror and hatred from
theif souls and from this land,
so that we can become at peace
with our God and with our con
science as we labor for the ad
vent of a better and cleaner
world.”
