Rabbis’ “Preaching” Opens This Week In Nett- Jersey
TRENTON, N. J., (AJP) — A
unique event in American Jew
ish history was to take place in
this city Tuesday through Thurs
day, March 24 to 26, setting
a precedent in Rabbinical tfn-
nals.
The event is called a Jewish
“Preaching Mission" directed by
rabbi Joshua O. Haberman of
this city’s Har Sinai Temple and
Dr. Abraham Shusterman, rabbi
of Baltimore’s Har Sinai Con
gregation.
The purpose of the “preaching
mission,” which has the official
endorsement of the Central Con
ference of American Rabbis, is
to win back the unaffiliated to
Judaism and at the same time
bring its eternal message to non-
Jews.
The Trenton Jewish “Preach--
ing Mission” inaugurated one
of a series of such “Missions” in
various parts of the country in
the next several years.
Dr. Shusterman, who de
livered the three preaching lec
tures under the chairmanship of
Rabbi Haberman, is a well-
known newspaper columnist and
TV personality. His Sunday
television program, featuring the
Rabbi, a Catholic priest and a
protestant minister and a panel
of college students, is viewed by
over a million people in the
Maryland-Washington area.
Rabbi Shusterman’s topics for
the three day “Preaching Miss
ion,” scheduled at the local Har
Sinai Temple are “The

Winnipeg Welfare
Considers Low-rent
Motels for Aged
WINNIPEG, (JTA)—The Jew
ish Welfare Fund of Winnipeg
this week invited Winnipeg
Jewry to demonstrate a need
for low-rental motel-style apart
ments for senior citizens to rent
for $40 to $45 a month.
The.Senior Citizens Committee
of the Fund explained that the
Fund was giving serious con
sideration to the sponsoring of a
group of such motels. These
would be built as a non-profit
development made possible by
federal and provincial govern
ment aid.
Each apartment would have a
refrigerator and stove, modern
living room, bedroom, kitchen
ette and bathroom with hearing
controlled by a thermostat and
a separate garden area for each
dwelling. The development
would include a central room
for use as a synagogue or recrea
tion room.

Benjamin Adelberg, President
of the Temple’s Men’s Club
which is sponsoring the event,
has extended an invitation to
the entire local Jewish commun
ity to attend the lectures. Mr
Adelberg expressed the hope
that “Jews in large numbers will
come for information and in
spiration and will bring as their
personal guests unaffiliated fel
low Jews and non-Jews who are
interested in the message of
Judaism.”
In explaining the "Preaching
Mission,” Rabbi Haberman told
the AJP reporter: “Exactly 135
years ago a group of loyal pio
neer Jews in a petition to Beth
Elohim Congregation in Charles
ton, S. C., expressed their, con
sternation over the fact that ‘we
are totally disregarding the fair
est opportunities of increasing
our own numbers while other
sects are extending the means of
divine worship to the remotest
quarters of the Habitable globe.’
The Jewish Preaching Mission
is a response to the challenge
these staunch forebears of ours
voiced long ago. It inaugurates
a vigorous effort to intensify the
religious loyalties of our people
to win back Jews who have
drifted away from us and at
tract the unaffiliated to whom
the message of Judaism is ap
pealing.”
