Gamzey on Value of
Religious Journalism
BOULDER, Colorado, (AJP)—
Religious journalism is a part
nership with the pulpit in
spreading the word of God, and
it must be pursued with a high
sense of mission and dedication,
Robert M. Gamzey, editor, Inter
mountain Jewish News, told
Journalism students at the Uni

His talk was given during the
annual Religion in Life Week.
The path to religious journal
ism is effectively taken by way
of ordinary newspaper experi
ence, Gamzey advised, out of
his eleven years on The Den
ver Post, He has been editor of
the 10-page weekly since 1943.
“Whatever is grist for the
pulpiteering mill is news for
the religious journal,” Gamsey
said, “be it spiritual message,
interpretation of the Bible, a
lecture on How to Live, a dis
cussion of the inner problems of
the religious community — all
these and other subjects make
news for the religious press.
“Just as the clergy takes a
position in the tradition of free
dom of the pulpit, so the religi
ous editor is expected to take a
stand on issues . . . The religious
newspaper must serve as a for
um for all points of view (but)
it should be a unifying force in
stead of a divisive factor
“In the broadest sense,” Gam
zey added, “the religions journal
is a partner with the church or
synagogue school in religious
education, except that the press
puts the accent on adult educa-
tion. The articles are not merely
news in the spot news sense,
but more often than not, are in
terpretative articles which edu
cate by including a deeper un
derstanding of underlying
trends, movements and events.”
