The Meaning of “Who Wrote”
To understand aright the pur
port of the Baba Batra account
indicating who “wrote” this and
that biblical work, it must at
once be conceded that the term
“wrote" cannot possibly have
been used with the same mean
ing throughout. Certainly in the
case of Hezekiah and his com
pany, who “wrote” Proverbs,
and of the Men of the Great
Synagogue, who “wrote” the
Twelve, the intended meaning is
that the books mentioned were
completed and edited by these
two bodies.
The title to chapters 25 and
following in the Book of Pro-
verbe Teads: “These also are the
Proverbs of Solomon, wfiich the
men of Hezekiah king of Judah
copied out”
The collection of Solomonic
proverbs was accordingly ‘com
pleted’ in the days of Hezekiah,
and the book then received its
final form. So it is with the
Twelve. The three concluding
writings are those of Haggai,
Zechariah and Malachi, who are
reckoned among the men of the
Great Synagogue. The volume,
naturally, became complete only
with their inclusion.
On the other hand, we have
no right to carry this meaning
into all the other instances.
Certainly, with reference to all
those who wrote their own
books, the meaning can be only
that they actually “wrote” them,
that is, were the authors of
them.

Only a Question of Time
Herschele Ostropoler, the fa
mous Jewish wit, once rushed
in^D the office of the “Chevra
Kaddisha," or burial society, and
with tears in his eyes, told them
that his wife had suddenly died,
and that he needed money to
purchase a coffin and shrouds.
He was given the necessary
sum, and a committee of the So
ciety forthwith went to take
care of the poor man’s deceased
spouse. As the representatives of
the burial association *ntered the
house, they were amazed to find
the ‘corpse” engaged in the un-
ghostly occupation of peeling po
tatoes.
“Say, Herschele,” they de
manded, “what was the great
idea of making fools of us and
cheating the Society out of mon
ey? Your wife seems to be pret
ty much alive.” *
“Don’t worry,” replied the
wag. “Sooner or later she will
be yours. What do you care if
she stays with me for a while?”
