173 Peachtree
Union of American Hebrew
Congregation, Rabbi William F.
Rosenblum told his Temple Is
rael Congregation Saturday
morning that he “cannot under
stand what prompted one of my
colleagues to make such a naive
suggestion” as to accept the
Pope’s Jeadership to "include us
all in the call for an ecumenical
council.” This “is not necessary,”
Dr. Rosenblum declared, “in
order to have better understand
ing between Christianity and
Judaism. The Pope has made it
clear that his purpose is to have
those who strayed away from
Rome to consider their return
to the fold. This is a family af
fair and should remain an event
for ‘Christians only’.”
Dr. Rosenblum’s criticism of
Eisendrath was evoked by a
statement the latter made on
the TV last week relative to the
Pope’s call for a world ecumeni
cal council of Christians. Ans
wering a question, Dr. Eisen
drath expressed the view that
the Pope was the right individ
ual to make the call for unity
to all, Jews and Christians, in a
greater world council for peace
of all religions. In this, it had
appeared to all viewers, he had
subordinated Judaism to Rome
and thus surrendered Jewish
leadership.
Developing his sermon, Dr.
Rosenblum declared: “How our
Christian friends celebrate their
Easter has a profound effect on
the attitude of millions towards
Judaism and the Jew. The way
the story of the Crucifixion and
the Resurrection are depicted
at this season of the year all too
often makes for bigotry instead
of good will.” The noted rabbi
added: “This Easter season be
comes the occasion “for the per
formance of Passion plays and
the release of television films
which arouse antipathies and
anti-Semitism.”
Dr. Rosenblum told his Con
gregation on West 91st Street
that “it was encouraging to note
that the Vatican has at long last
ordered the elimination of the
unfortunate references to Jews
in its Good Friday liturgy.” He
then recalled a visit he had
had with the late Pious XII in
1948 at which time he had urged
the “elimination in church lit
erature of three libelous phrases
about Jews. One was that the
Jews were ‘perfidious,’ the sec
ond that the Jews had accepted
upon themselves an eternal
‘curse’ and the third that the
Jews had clamored for the
crucifixion, three teachings
which I believe to be at the bot
tom of the virulent anti-Semit
ism which made a Hitler horror
possible in modern times.”
