Hext Year in Jerusalem' ComesrTrue
At model Seder* in preparation for Festival of Freedom, which opens Wedneiday
Eve, April 22, East European families above, newly arrived in Israel, prepare to
observe their first Seder in new State. As they recount the ancient and inspiring tale
of liberation from Egyptian bondage, they thrill to the realization that for them the
classic Seder prophecy—“Next Year in Jerusaleml”—has come true this year. They
are among the more than 20,000 fortunate Jews permitted to emigrate from East
ern Europe to Israel in recent months and become reunited with their families.
Though their arrival has placed great burdens on economy of Israel, the people
This Year for East European Families
comers welcome. To help finance the transport of East European Je^s to Israel and
speed their absorption into the life of that nation's people, the Jews of America
are being asked by the United Jewish Appeal to raise a $100 million Special Fund
in 1959. This effort is over and above UJA’s regular campaign to provide funds
for its aid-agencies, which serve close to 600,000 Jewish men, women, and
children in 24 countries other than Israel.

IN A LIGHTER VEIN

They Were Considerate
Rabbi Judah ha-Nassi, the
compiler of “Mishnah,” who
lived some 1800 hundred years
ago, was lecturing one day be
fore his students, when his nos
trils were assailed by the odor
of garlic, in which a certain stu
dent had indulged.
The great teacher was plainly
irritated, and, pausing in his
discourse, gave an order that
any student who had eaten the
obnoxious plant, should leave
the lecture-room immediately.
Nobody stirred. Evidently the
garlic-eater was ashamed to ac
knowledge publicly that he was
the cause of the master’s annoy
ance.
Finally a student, named Rab
bi Hiya, rose from his seat and
walked out
Rabbi Hiya was not guilty of
eating the odoriferous vegetable,
but he left the room in order
to make it easier for the offend
er to do the same.
Presently another student left
the room, and a third; and soon
a general exodus started.
In a few moments not a single
student remained in the lecture
room.
