UNITED NATIONS, (AJP) —
Barely having absorbed the im
portant lessons inherent in our
terrestrial planet, man is aspiring
to outer space. The earth seeks
to conceal the furious fires and
passions within her breast only
to have them disrupt in periodic
quakes and volcanic eruptions.
Similarly, racism and anti-
Semitism even in the Free World,
apparently, cannot be concealed.
They certainly erupted this past
week. While Soviet Deputy Pre
mier Kozlov was busy glossing
over charges of anti-Semitism
and discrimination in the USSR,
the same issue broke here at the
UN. The young son of Dag Ham-
marskjold’s top brain, Dr. Ralph
Bunche, and the Nobel Peace
Prize winner himself, were de
nied membership in the hitherto
unsuspected West Side Tennis
Club at Forest Hills. The ban
was entirely on the Club’s regu
lations against accepting colored
members. In the meantime Dr.
Bunche revealed that Jews were
also denied membership.
Well, the man who is the very
symbol of human rights here at
the UN and who represents in
his every act and deed the spirit
of the world organization’s
Charter, spoke out as he should
have done—and the result has
turned into an international inci
dent.
On the self-same day of the
Tennis Club expose, two beaches
in Maryland, outside the national
capitol, barred a Chinese pro-
fesor and his family from enjoy
ing God’s sunshine and water.
The guest of an American, whose
little daughter was born here
while her father helped the Navy
map the Chinese coastline in the
defense of the Free World against
Communism, Dr. Chiao Min-
Hsieh asked the same question
posed by Dr. Bunche: “How can
you explain these things to your
children?”

one in a group of UN reporters
invited by the City of Bangor the
Fourth of July weekend to take
part in ceremonies honoring the
community’s 125th anniversary.
The invitation, presumably, was
made in order to show the for
eign press corps how a typical
American city celebrates its
freedom. One of the events was
a dinner at the local Gold Club,
during which our group of Jap
anese, Vietnamese, Africans, Is
raelis and other were toasted
and welcomed. When the dinner
was over, it was learned that the
Club maintains a ban on colored
and Jewish applicants.
The discriminationists, a small
but dangerous element of mal
contents, are not too bright and
certainly not too consistent.
When button-holed, they say
that their exclusive little haven
has no room for “non-Cauca
sians.”
This “bunching” of Jewish peo
ples with the colored races by
the bigots should indeed be
taken as a compliment to the
nation that gave mankind the
Bible, since it places the Jewish
communities the world over on
a par with the race of the future.
Three-quarters of the world’s
population is non-white and
surging ahead with a terrific
tempo for world leadership. This
is becoming more and more evi
dent here at the UN where the
African states represent a vital

Israel Returns Captured
Plane to Lebanon as
“Good Will” Gesture
JERUSALEM, CJTA) — As a
“good will” gesture, Israel will
soon return to Lebanon the Le
banese reconnaissance plane
which was intercepted over Is
raeli airspace recently while
photographing Israeli territory
from the air. The three mem
bers of the Lebanese crew were
handed back to Lebanon, last
week, throught the Mixed Arm
istice Commission.
As part of the “good will” ex
change, Lebanon is expected to
return to Israel a diplomatic
pouch seized at Beirut. The Is
raeli parcel was taken from a
Swissair plane when the ship
landed at Beirut on way to Iran.
Protest Conversion
Of Cracow Shule-
Into Museum
GENEVA, (JTA)—One of the
oldest and most sacred of Euro
pean synagogues, the famous
“Remo” synagogue in Cracow,
founded by Rabbi Moses Isserles
in 1553, is to be closed as a house
of worship and will be converted
into a museum, according to re
ports from Poland received here.
Energetic protests have been
lodged with the Polish authori
ties by Jews in that country, the
reports here state. But the au
thorities have over-ruled the ob
jections.
Zionist Public Affairs
Committee
Changes Name
WASHINGTON (JTA) ^ The
name of the American Zionist
Committee for Public Affairs has
been changed to American Israel
Public Affairs Committee by de
cision of its executive board.
Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, chair
man of the organization, announ
ced this week.
The change was made to reflect
the fact that the committee is
supported by all elements of the
American Jewish community
rather than Zionists alone. The
committee will continue to con
duct public action in Washington
with a view to strengthening
friendship of the U.S. and Israel,
and to counteract Arab lobbying
against Israel.
the Council chambers.
It has become understandable
now why the Asian and African
nations of the world are turning
to the State of Israel for techni
cal and cultural know-how. They
know that in Israel they can
deal with a people who never
knew the sin of discrimination
against other races, a people
with whom they share a com
mon heritage in racialist marty-
dom. In this connection, it is im
portant to realize that the invita
tion extended by Abba Eban—
new President of the Weizmann
Institute—to all nations to attend
an international scientific con
ference in Israel next year, is an
invitation to colored peoples.
The call to Rehovoth — aside
from pointing up the disastrous
loss in human resources caused
by racial discrimination — shows
that the discriminated-against-
peoples have a basis for joint ac
tion through which they can con
vert their liabilities into precious
assets sufficiently to challenge
the world of the herrenvolk and
their hegemony across the world
from the market-place to the
tennis courts.
Thus, while condemning every
act of discrimination in the
strongest possible language, it is
necessary optimistically to grasp
the curious forces which are
shaping up in the modern, dy
namic world where the standards
of ethics are suoplemented by
the economic and social factors
transcending race, color and reli
gion.
Dr. Bunche has set an import
ant wheel in motion against the
fading world of bigot. Indeed,
when the masters of the Cauca
sian magic find that their know
how is no longer a monopoly,
their monopolistic claims to the
green lawns and fair beaches of
the world will also have been
broken.
