A Difeat of Contemporary Opinion
Khrushchev and Our State of Mind
Diplomatic and social amenities demand that Khrushchev’s visit
to the United States at the invitation of the President be unmarred
by incident. This is a must regardless of what each person thinks
of the wisdom of the visit or of the things that Khrushchev stands
for . . . Although we have watched the Russian system carefully
and over a period of time . . . we have yet to see a more blunt
statement on the subject than that offered by the vice Chancellor
of the University of Buffalo following a visit to that country: “Most
Americans who read newspapers and magazines are now aware
(1) that we are engaged in a great struggle with the Soviet Union,
(2) that the Soviet Union is growing in industrial and military
power, and (3) that our position vis-a-vis the Soviet Union is steadi
ly declining. However, the vast majority of Americans, at least 99.9
percent, still do not fully realize—1. That the U S. is in by far the
greatest peril of its history. 2. That the Communist leaders of Rus
sia really are planning to dominate the whole world, including the
U.S. 3. That the struggle in which we are now engaged is the
climatic struggle of history, which will decide the history of the
world for the next few hundred years. 4 That we are up against
a completely new social and political force in the world ... 5 That
fthe Communist threat will probably be the dominant factor in shap
ing our lives during the next decade 6. That this struggle will come
to a climax probably in 10 or 15 years. 7. That we are in real
danger of losing the struggle. 8. That we have only a few more
years of grace . .

Israel—a Democratic-Theocratic State
. . . There are reasons why many people insist that modern
Israel is a theocratic State, governed in the main by Biblical or
Rabbinical jurisprudence. This notion was given some credence by
a clause in Israel’s Proclamation of Independence that the “State
of Israel will be based on the principles of liberty, justice and
peace as conceived by the Prophets of Israel”; by the fact that
Saturday is near observed as the legal and official day of rest in
Israel, that the Israel Ministry of Defense supplies only kosher
meat to the Israeli Army, and other matters . . . Israel is, never
theless, a truly democratic state, which promised, from its incep
tion, to “Uphold the full social and political equality of all its citi
zens, without distinction of religion, race, or sex.” Beyond that,
Israel guarantees freedom of religion, conscience, education and
culture as well . . . This new democratic society ... is faced with
•challenging and complex problems. That it is finding the answers
-to those problems in the accumulated legal tradtion of the Anglo-
American countries should be a source of satisfaction to us. It also
gives us some assurance that the democratic tradition has found a
foothold in the re-emerging civilization of the Middle East It is
truly a Western Country.
BARTLEY C. CRUM, Israel Today
A Reading Nation
To the average urban American who sees, at the most, two
morning and two afternoon papers on his city news-stands, the
sight of some 22 daily newspapers, 20 of them morning papers,
staring up at him from a Tel Aviv, Haifa or Jerusalem news-stand
or cart, is startling to say the least. Add to this number 11 bi- and
tri-weeklies, 38 weeklies, and six fortnightlies, serving a popula
tion of about 2,000,000 and the perspective is almost terrifying. The
ratio of press to population seems to be almost totally out of pro
portion. But Israel is like that The ratio of achievement to num
bers is heavily in favor of the former. Referring to the daily news-
fare, 14 are consumed by readers of Hebrew, 2 by German, and one
each by English, Arabic, Bulgarian, Polish, French and Hungarian.
While 7 of the dailies claim to be non-affiliated, only one, we
learn, is not subsidized wholly or in part by a political party of
some organization, secular or religious. Two of them are affiliated
with Histadrut, one with Mapai, one with Mapam, and one each
with the General Zionists, Agudat Israel, World Agudat Israel,
Herut, Communist, Achdut Avodah and Poale Agudat Israel. And
each one of these papers has its devoted readers, party politics be
ar ing as intense as it is in Israel . . .

The Forgotten Americans
Some Marginal Notes on American Jews in Israel
By ISAAC CARMEL
The author of this article, one of the deans of
American Zionism and how a citizen of Israel, Is
initiator and editor of “Americans In Israel”
In Israel the myth is extant
that all American Jews do for
Israel is to part with some of the
superfluous coins in their pock-
etbooks. In America, on the
other hand, the legend is that
American Jews, with but few
exceptions, never did nor ever
will settle in Israel to partici
pate personally in the upbuild
ing of the Jewish State.
As an American Jew who did
settle in Israel I look at the re
cord. I took time out from my
other activities to do some re
search. Let me say parentheti
cally, that I never swallowed the
fairy tale of the “invisible Amer
ican” in Israel. As a visitor to
and, later, as a citizen of Israel
I literally stumbled over con
crete evidence that American
Jewry has a very large share in
the establishment and consoli
dation of the State of Israel.
Gradually I became obsessed
with the idea that the story of
the American Jew in Israel has
to be told. I am now engaged in
operation AMERICANS IN IS
RAEL.
Before I tell you about this
project let me acquaint you with
a few elementary facts that I am
certain you didn’t know.
At least twelve thousand Jews
from America have settled in Is
rael. Most of them, strangely en
ough, emigrated t6 the Jewish
Homeland when its political fu
ture was rather problematic—
that is, before the State of Is
rael was born.
Without mentioning names
at this time (a partial listing
would be unfair), I can assure
you that American Jews are
prominently represented among
the leading groups of Israeli
life. You will find them in the
high echelons of political, cult
ural and economic spheres.
Over a thousand American
kibbutzniks have done their part
and are still laboring in agricul
tural settlements of every des
cription. As a matter of fact, the
landscape of Israel is studded
with kibbutzim which were es
tablished and nursed through
their formative years by Am
erican Jews imbued with the
passon of the pioneer spirit. To
mention but a few: Kfar Blum,
Sassa, Hasolelim in the North;
Kfar Menachem and Urim in
the Negev. Raanano, Herut,

Herzliah. Poriah, Avichael are a
few of the private farming com
munities established by Ameri
can Jews.
My good friend the writer M.
Z. Frank, who likes to delve into
old records, tells me that Ameri
can Jews were settling in what
was then usually referred to as
the Holy Land since the nine
teenth and even the eighteenth
centuries: The “Mandelbaum
Gate” in old Jerusalem, for in
stance, is named after its origi
nal owner, an American Jew. In
several of the “old colonies”
founded in the 1880’s, vou will
meet the descendants of Ameri
can settlers. Long before World
War I Eliezer Lippe Jaffe of
New York went to Palestine,
where he helped to establish
the type of settlement known as
a moshav—a cooperative village,
which has become perhaps the
most common type in contem
porary Israel.
Another American Jew, Simon
Goldman of St. Louis, planrfed
and organized a group of pros
pective settlers who established
Poriah, near Tiberias
More than four decades ago,
in 1917, 6,000 young men from
America, not subject to the mili
tary draft, enlisted in the Jew
ish Legion which, as part of the
British Expeditionary Force,
helped Britain liberate Palestine
from Turkish rule. At about the
same time Justice Louis D.
Bran dels obtained official sanc
tion 'rom the United States
Government for the formation of
the Hadassah Medical Unit
which went to Palestine and
there rendered a great humani
tarian service to the Middle East
It should be remembered -that
the United States was not at
war with Turkey and that its
sanctioning of the Jewish Le
gion and the Hadassah Medical
Unit constituted a political act
of faith in the Zionist idea.
These are iust a few well-
known facts that come to mind
when one contemplates Ameri
can participation in the early
political and economic Zionist
projects in Israel. A long his
tory can and will be written
about the gigantic role the
Palestine Economic Corporation,
the American Zion Common-
wealth and countless other
groups and individuals played
and still play in the upbuilding
of the Jewish State.
AMERICANS IN ISRAEL will
recount this uniaue epic and set
the record straight.
