Former President Truman Tells Hadassah
He Has Faith in Israel’s Future
New Israel Consul lands CS Efforts
In Behalf of His Country’s Economy
By ADOLPH ROSENBERG
“You have provided us with
the tools to enable Israel to build
our labor toree.”
Thla was the declaration earl
ier this week of Israel’s new
Consul Moshe Leshem, making
his first public talk before a
group in the Atlanta Jewish
Community.
His talk was a feature of the
initial meeting of the Atlanta
Israel Bond Cabinet assembled
at the Mayfair Club earlier this
week to learn details of the

forthcoming fall campaign.
Everyone in Israel is aware
of the splendid support you
have made in behalf of our
country,” asserted Consul Le
shem, successor to the popular
Nahum Astar.
Mr. Astar departed with his
family a few days earlier to as
sume his new post with the
Foreign Office in Jerusalem.
“It is our fervent hope that
you will continue to place in
our hands the necessary tools to
build up our economy.
Compared to the industrial
trend in Israel with the recent
years of industrialization of the
South, he added:
“Industry in Israel is gradual
ly moving South too, south
wards from Haifa into the Ne
gev.”
Consul Leshem forecast that
the Israel south will be built up
in the years ahead as the Ameri
can South is now being done by
the movement of industry into
this area.
He predicted that “the fruits
of your efforts and your con
fidence by such activities as
your purchase of Israel bonds
will be demonstrated.”
Somedays, he said, we will
have such streets in Israel as
your own Peachtree, verdant
with growing plants and trees
and bustling and teeming with
thriving businesses and beauti
ful homes.
Max Rittenbaum, Atlanta Is
rael Bond chairman, described
some of the “exciting events
and visitors schedulea for the
community during the months
ahead as the campaign pro
gresses.”
These will be announced and
detailed in forthcoming issues
of The Southern Israelite.
Shipping Links
Between Israel,
Soviets Resumed
LONDON (JTA) — Resum
ption of shipping links between
Israel and the Soviet Union has
been effected quietly, for the
first time since the USSR cut
Israel off its shipping list during
the 1956 Sinai campaign, the
Financial Times reported here.
According to tne Financial
Times, the 2,000-ton Israeli
freighter Carmela, owned by
Mediterranean Seaways, a ship
ping firm with headquarters at
Haifa, has unloaded a shipment
of 400 tons of asbestos at the
Soviet Black Sea port of Odessa.
Additional sailings are planned
between Haifa and Odessa, the
newspaper reported.
Russia halted all economic re
lations with Israel, and even
withdrew its Ambassador^ from
Israel, after the Sinai-Suez crisis
developed in 1956. A large oil
contract under which the USSR
was to supply Israel with oil for
a number of years was cancelled
by the Soviet Union unilaterally
following that crisis. Israel sued
the Rusian oil export trust for
breach of contract in an arbitra
tion court in Moscow, but lost
the suit. More recently, Moscow
sent an Ambassador back to Is
rael to represent the Kremlin
there.

St. LOUIS, (JTA) — Fohner
President Harry S. Truman ex
pressed his belief Monday in
the “glorious future” awaiting
Israel and said that when he
first extended it recognition in
1948 “I was only expressing the
sentiments of the people of the
United States.”
In a filmed address to the
opening session of the 45th na
tional convention of Hadassah,
attended by more than 2,500
delegates and guests, Mr. Tru
man urged that “we must strive
abroad as well as at home to
defend human rights and to ex
pand the enjoyment of freedom.”
He lashed out against hatred
and bigotry and characterized
as “our enemies” those who, seek
"to set group against group,
faith against faith, to create
prejudice and to spread hate
and distrust among our people.”

Amnesty Proposal
On War Crimes
BONN,Sept. 14, (JTA) —The
West German Government has
no intention of considering a
general amnesty for war crimes
against humanity, a Ministry of
Justice spokesman said this
week. An amnesty, covering all
such crimes prior to 1945, was
demanded last week by the right-
wing German Party.
The demand was made on
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer
by Dr. Herbert Schneider, chair
man of the German Party, who
proposed that when Dr. Hein
rich Luebke took office as presi
dent this week, he used the oc
casion to declare a general am
nesty.
The Free Democratic Party, a
member of Dr. Adenauer’s coali
tion, was said this week to be
prepared to discuss the possi
bility of an amnesty which Dr.
Schneider said should apply for
"all acts whose origins are found
in National Socialism and the
chaos of war.”
Members of all parties in the
Federal Parliament were de
scribed this week as sympathet
ic to an appeal from the H1AG,
the welfare organization of the
SS, the Hitler Elite Guard, that
some 1,500 former high-ranking
SS officers be considered eligi
ble, under section 131 of the
German basic law, for govern
ment pension.
A paragraph of that section,
f ave general amnesty to Nazi
arty members who had not
been convicted of crimes against
humanity and who had occupied
lesser positions in the Nazi
heirachy, thus permitting them
to qualify for pensions and
other benefits.
In a petition circulated to all
members of the Federal Parlia
ment, the HIAG claimed that
the regular SS force, the Waffen
SS, had not been involved in
crimes against humanity. Mem
bers of the Gestapo—the Nazi
secret police—and other, key
units in the Hitler organization,
were drawn from the SS.

of Mr. Truman.
President Eisenhower, in a
special message to the conven
tion, hailed Hadassah for “its
programs of welfare service and
education” which, he said, “re
veal the vitality of its faithful
membership.”
Premier David Ben Gurion, in
a message to the convention,
said that “great tasks still lie
ahead” in the “rebuilding of
our land and the refashioning-of
our people” which were made
more difficult by the absence of
peace and by the contihued
threat to Israel’s security.
Mr. Truman told the conven
tion that among the nations of
the world were two great free
governments, the United States
and Israel, that will continue
the fight against totalitarian
government. "These two govern
ments stand for the belief that
governments are organized for
the benefit of the people whom
they serve. The totalitarian gov
ernments or dictatorships stand
for the belief that the people
are to be exploited for the dic
tator. They believe that the dic
tator’s whim is all that counts.”
In discussing the State of Is
rael, Mr. Truman said that “it
has never seemed to me that I
deserved any special creidit as
an individual for what I did
about Israel when I was President
of the United States. In recogn
izing the new State of Israel and
giving careful consideration to
its seeds and its problems after
1948, I believe that I was 'only
expressing the sentiments of the
people of the United States re
