Collegiates Scatter to Many
Campuses as Fall Term Begins
This was a busy week for At
lanta parents as sons and daugh
ters hurried back to college . . .
It always is a last minute rush
with fond farewells, hectic pack
ing and then the rush of send
ing off things the young peo
ple forgot to take.
Susie Gross is off to Douglas
College, the women's college of
Rutger’s University at New
Brunswick, N. J. She’ll be writ
ing to the Joe Grosses, her par
ents.
Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Cohen
have a double job of keeping in
touch with their collegiates.
Martin is returning to the Uni
versity of Georgia at Athens
while Judy is at Vanderbilt on a
scholarship.
Mr.' ana Mrs. Morris Mitzner
saw daughter Nancy off. to
Sophie Newcomb.
New Orleans seems a particu
larly popular spot with its two
top notch colleges. Michael Par-
ver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike
Parver, is returning to Tulane
for post-graduate study, Donald
Gilner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abe
Gilner, is at Tulane too while his
sister Elaine is at Sophie New
comb.
Arlene Bock, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Mike Bock, Will return
to Sophie Newcomb for her
senior year.
Of course the University of
Georgia campus at Athens will
claim many, many Jewish young
sters besides Martie Cohen. The
group will also include Howard
Burnham, son of Mrs. Gert
Burnham, and Morty Shaffer,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Sol Shaffer;
and Howard Saunders, son of
Mrs. Lil Saunders; and Michael
Merrin, son of Dr. and Mrs. D.
Merrin, formerly of Atlanta but
now of Albany.
The Sylvan Makovers helped
daughter Marilyn pack for Cor
nell U, while the baggage of
David Geffen, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Louis Geffen, was marked
out hern
Mrs. Barney I. Boorstin is
resting comfortably after under
going surgery at the Georgia
Baptist Hospital.
Dr. and Mrs. Seymour Alter-
man and children of Miami were
guests of their parents, Mr. and
Mrs. A. B. Reisman, earlier this
week. Dr. and Mrs. Alterman
sailed for Europe on Wednesday.
They will return in time to
spend Yom Kippur in Atlanta.
Malcolm Minsk of Atlanta left
Sept. 4 for a three-week trip to
Europe. He will spend ten days
in Israel, where he will be the
f uest of his grandfather, Esor
izenstat, who left this country
for the Holy Land seven years
ago, and his aunt, Miss Tamara
Minsk, who has lived in, Israel
for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Alan M. Smith
of Atlanta announce the birth
of a daughter, Amy Lynn. Mrs.
Smith is the former Barbara
Hurwitz of Atlanta.
Mr. and Mrs. Sidney P. Men
del announce the birth of a
daughter, Betsy Lynn, on Aug.
29. Mrs. Mendel is the former
Lee Damson of Huntsville.
Bert Kalmar Jr, son of the
late author by that name, has
arrived from California for a
visit to his aunt, Mrs. Harry
Cohen of 982 Virginia Ave,
N. E.
Bride-elect Libby Mannis was
honor guest at a morning coffee
when Mrs. Kearney Moore and
her mother, Mrs. Hattie Pierce,
entertained at their apartment
in the Howell House.

land, Mrs. Irvin Lowenthal of
Brooklyn and Dr. and Mrs. Harry

Dothan, Ala, celebrated his Bar
Mitzvah last weekend at Con
gregation Emanu-El. A buffet
supper was held in his honor
following the service at the
Country Club.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mak-
over of Atlanta had as their
guest recently their grand-niece,
Miss Francine Grossbart of
France, who is now making her
home in New York.
At least seven families in
Greenville, S. C. will be receiv
ing mail from college students.

fert, and Michael Stein, fresh
man, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin
Stein.
Rona Chambers, daughter of
Hy and Ruth Chambers will be
a sophomore at the University of
Georgia at Athens while Susan
Bargei;, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Milton Garber, has selected
the University of Florida for
her freshman studies. Mr. and
Mrs. Carl Proser will be writ
ing to daughter Marsha at
Women’s College, University of
North Carolina.
Mrs. Toby Loewinsohn last
week-end entertained Dr. E. J.
Mirmelli of Chicago and Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Buchbaum of
Miami Beach. Mr. Mirmelli is
the owner of the Surfcomber
Hotel in Miami Beach.
Rabbi and Mrs. Joseph Cohen
have returned to Atlanta from
th£ir trip which included Paris,
Rome and Israel. While in Tel
Aviv they were joined by Rabbi
Cohen’s sister and brother-in-
law from Rhodes and a wonder
ful reunion took place, which
included his sister and her fami
ly of Tel Aviv.
Rabbi and Mrs. Cohen have as
their guests, Mrs. Cohen’s mo
ther, Mrs. Victoria Palachi and
brother-in-law, Mr. Asher Be T
har of Havana, Cuba. Mrs. Pala
chi when will remain here for
several months is well known in
Atlanta, having been the guest
of Rabbi and Mrs. Cohen on
several occasions.
Dr. Hugh A. Klotz, after serv
ing as Regimental Surgeon for
the Third Marine Regiment on
Okinawa, is visiting his parents

Klotz will continue his military
service as a Staff Physician at
the United States Naval Hos
pital at San Diego, California.

ing out of town. Joel Feldman,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Feld
man, will take his classes on the

Mrs. Louis R. Lefkoff will be
leaving soon for Stanford Uni
versity in California.
