12th century. It was Pope Inno
cent III (1198-1216), who had de
creed it as the required sign of
distinction to be worn by all Jews.
The only positive facts that have
come down to us about the poet’s
life are: that he lived between
1218 and 1341; that his name was
Suesskind; Trimperg, his birth
place; writing his profession. He
seemed to have been familiar with
the works of the great Jewish
poets in Spain, such as Abraham
Ibn Gabirol, the famous philoso
pher and scientist (1021-1069) and
Moses ben Nachman (Nahmani-
des), the renowned Talmudist
(1195-1270). There are striking re
semblances in the views and ex
pressions of the two early poets
and many a parallel can be drawn.
Both poets knew all the bitter
hardships of a Jewish singer: both
were banished from the Court
where previously they had been
greatly honored. Moses Ben Nah-
man defended Judaism against an
ex-Jew, a notorious anti-Semite
named Pablo Christiano. The de
bate took place in the court of
Barcelona, in 1263, in the presence
of King James of Aragon. Al
though Moses ben Nahman won
the debate by his sagacity, his re
ward was bitter exile on the
charge of “blasphemy”.
And Suesskind von Trimperg?
Suesskind, too, was banished
from the Court where previously
he had been praised and honored,
and he died in Trimperg, his na
tive town; yet it meant bitter exile
to him. In Nahman’s Testament to
his son, we find striking resem
blances to the ethical views and
religious ideas expressed by
Suesskind.
We all should like to know more
about a poet like Suesskind. In
his native town of Trimperg peo
ple will show you the queer old
house where he was supposed to
have passed his days, and they
will whisper: “That old Jew has
lived here”. And those living to
day in the low, grim old stone-

mansion will tell you: “This Jew
Suesskind sang in his youth before
many a king and high lord, and he
was at their side. But grave mis
fortune visited him in his old age,
for all his children had left him
and he died in sorrow and misery,
a lonely, heart-broken old man.
And since his death no Jew has
ever lived in Trimperg”.
The poet is a cultural phe
nomena that blossomed forth dur
ing a period of darkness and bitter
oppression. Yet, despite his dire
misery and complete isolation
from the outside world, he man
aged to break through the high-
walled ghetto and to sing moving
ly of the sorrows, joys and striv
ings of his people.
