tribute to our departed fellow-
member Mr. Cohen.” (You see, he
was all mixed up on the identity
of some of the members of his big
congregation; so to the dead Mr.
Levy he gave the name bf Cohen.)
The rabbi went on: “Mr. Cohen
made a good life . . . good citizen,
good husband, good father.”
The mournful heads of the fun
eral congregation looked sharply
up: Whom was the rabbi burying
anyway? It was Levy who was
dead but he was burying Cohen
instead. And the dead Levy never
had been husband or father; he
had been a bachelor.
The rabbi continued: “It should
give undying comfort to Mr. Co
hen’s wife and children to remem
ber the noble father he was. By
this memory he never shall die.”
The service was over, the
mourners walked away whisper
ing to each other: "He buried
Cohen instead of Levy.” . . . “He
buried a father instead of a
bachelor.”
And, indeed, there was similar
confusion Up There when Mr.
Levy came to The Gate.
“I’m the one who a little while
ago was sent up here by com
mendation of the rabbi,” he re
ported to the angel. “My name is
Levy.”
The angel looked into the record
. . . “No,” the angel said, “it wasn’t
any Mr. Levy who was just sent
up here. It was a Mr. Cohen.” The
Gate remained closed to Mr. Levy.
The angel turned to the next ap
plicant.
As far as I know, Mr. Levy still
waits there to get in. His poor,
distressed soul probably keeps
thinking: “Yes, that’s what comes
out of a congregation that grows
too large. The rabbi just can’t
know everybody in it and a Levy
gets mixed up with a Cohen.”
So, having repeated an old, old
story of mine, I hand it on to Mr.
D. J. to tell it to his rabbi and to
fellow-members of the too-big
congregation. As I myself see him,
a rabbi is no big-production
wholesaler, but one who should
serve humbly in the modest house,
and who knows the first names of
all in it, knows what ails their
troubled hearts, and counsels
them.
Thanks Mr. D. J. for prompting
this column to give these few
words toward encouraging over
sized congregations to break up
into home-like smaller ones.
