eating and walking,” he reported
laconically. “And reading the pa
per. And television.”
“Is there any entertainment?”
“The high school band. Some
singers trying to get in show
business come in and sing a
couple songs.”
Aaron described a small arc
with the head of his cane. “These
are all the guests?”
“Yes,” said David, disgruntled.
“It’s an exclusive place, pfui!”
Aaron Silver rocked and
thought. “What if we put on some
plays?” he Said, almost dreamily.
“Huh?” David’s chair, creaked
wildly as he turned to stare at
his companion. Then he laughed
a short laugh. “You were the
actor, Aaron. We were storekeep
ers and dressmakers and sign
painters and butchers."
“So? That’s good,” insisted
Aaron. “You think only actors
are needed to put on plays? What
about costumes? They have to be
sewed. What about billboards?
They have to be lettered. What
about tickets? They have to be
printed. What about—”
“Wait—” David cut in. “Cohen,
over there, was a printer!” Hear

rose and limped toward the two
men. “Cohen,” invited David ex
citedly, “sit down.”
“You are excited, Kappsky?”
Mr. Cohen inquired unbelieving
ly as he eased his arthritic bones
into a chair. “I never saw this
gentleman excited,” he explained
to Aaron.
As David called to one after an
other of them, the twenty people
on the porch gathered around
Aaron Silver, helping each other
with rockers, newspapers and
knitting bags. Their hungry souls
showed in their eyes while they
listened raptly to Aaron’s ideas.
“I’ll make costumes,” said Mrs.
Hutter, the dressmaker. “How
long,” she told her nearest neigh
bor, “since I held a needle in my
fingers!”
“I used to design the sets for
my lodge plays!”
“I know about lights. I was a li
censed electrician!”
“I could make up the actors!” The
speaker tossed her head girlishly,
and David tore away the veil of
years to see she had been a real
beauty.
Aaron beamed as he looked
