him to spend a night away from
his home.
“He is loved by his neighbors
because he is a good man. No
higher compliment can be paid
to a man.
“He is a deeply religious man.
He does not parade his religion
but there is pride in his voice
when he says ‘I am a Jew’.
Throughout his life he has prac
ticed tolerance for the religious
beliefs of all men.
“At the last session when the
membership of the House unani
mously presented to him a plaque
for his home, in expressing his
appreciation, he said:
What you have done for me
in the past, and more particularly
here today, damns the tongue of
evil men who say that the people
of South Carolina are an intoler
ant people.
Honoring me, the son of im
migrant parents born in a for
eign land, condemns those who
criticize our State and our people.
If there is any good in me it is be
cause of the teaching I received
at the hands of my father who has
passed on and my old mother who
still lives. To them and their
training, I owe a debt I will never
be able to repay.
“I knew his father. He was my
friend. I am sure his mother was
made happy by these words of a
loving son.
“Because of his statement as to
our critics, I may be pardoned
for saying that when Mr. Blatt
was first elected Speaker, 20 years
ago, he was the only Jew in the
General Assembly. In the House
that now honors him, there is no
other man of his religious faith.
“The political career of Speaker
Blatt, in his county and in this
House, is a refutation of the mis
representation frequently made in
some northern states, that the peo
ple of South Carolina are anti-
semitic.
“This portrait on your walls,
with its record of his service, will
show that Mr. Blatt has eight
times been elected Speaker by
a House with constantly changing
membership. It should convince
those who visit this hall that
South Carolinians respect and
honor men of character, courage
and capacity, regardless of their
religious faith. . . ”
Here are comments made by
Speaker Blatt on the program:
... I want to say to the people
of my old home town of Black-
ville, and to all of the people of
Barnwell County how grateful I
am for the confidence that they
have shown in me and for electing
me so many times to public office.
I will never be able to repay them
for the kindnesses shown me and
I want them to know that no hu
man being could be more grateful
for their friendship and for their
confidence. I would also like to
express my gratitude to all of the
people of the State for their help
in my many campaigns for Speak
er and for the confidence they
have shown in me. It is my earn
est prayer that I shall always be
worthy of this confidence.
“I would like to say to the
f eople of the State how grateful
am to the distinguished artist,
Charles Mason Crowson, the
gentleman who painted my por
trait. He was kind and patient and
I must say to you my friends that
Charlie Crowson did something
that nature didn’t do, he made me
a respectable looking person.
“It is extremely difficult for
me to express on this occasion that
which is deep in my heart.
“Last April when the Honorable
Sam Boylston proposed in a Re
solution, without any inking to
me, what is now taking place, I
was struck with awe and misgiv
ings.
“Over and over again, I was to
