Teen-Aged Anti-Semites Arrested
In Virginia; Linked to Neo-Nazi Group
ALEXANDRIA, Va., (JTA)—
The existence of a “Nazi Storm
Troop” of about 20 high school
boys was disclosed here last week
as police made known the arrest
of three teen-aged anti-Semites.
The group was suspected of re
cent activities involving deface
ment of property with anti-Jew
ish slogans, arson and theft of
rifles and ammunition.
Police said some of the youths
were linked with George Lin
coln Rockwell^ self-styled com
mander of a neo-Nazi organiza
tion in nearby Arlington. Rock
well, a former naval officer, has
spread anti-Jewish propaganda
in the nation’s capital area for
about two years. Youths aged
14, 17 and' 18 are accused in the
fire bombing of the home of the
Vice-Mayor of Alexandria. Anti-
Jewish and Nazi slogans were
pasted on the doorway.
At a Juvenile Court hearing
the 14-year-old pleaded guilty
to arson on charges. Sentencing
was postponed for two weeks,
Juvenile Court jurisdiction was
waived on the 17-year-old who
was ordered held for Grand
Jury action on charges of con
spiracy and violation of proba
tion. The 18-year-old Lloyd J.
Conner, was held for the Grand
Jury on arson and burglary
charges.
The father of the 14-year-old
revealed the existence of the
Nazi "Storm Troopers” at the
local high school. He indicated
the movement was inspired by
Rockwell. Alexandria school su
perintendent T. C. Williams an
nounced that he would launch
an inquiry. Informants stated
the group included Rockwell’s
disciples and was supplied with
Nazi insignia, swastika arm
bands and anti-Jewish material
in pamphlet form.
The Vice-Mayor, whose home
was the target of arson and
anti-Jewish propaganda, is a
non-Jew. His wife, also a Chris
tian, is a Juvenile Court judge.

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Russian
anti-Semites started fires this

and at the cottage of the care
taker of a Jewish cemetery in
Malakhovka, a Moscow suburb,
according to an American travel

the Soviet Union, The New York
Times reported last week.
The traveler, whose name was
withheld, said the two attempts
at arson in Malakhovka occurred
early in the morning on the sec
ond day of Rosh Hashonah and
that the fires were the latest of
several recent anti-Semitic in
cidents in the suburb.
He reported that firemen sav

killed when she tried to take
some possessions out of the burn
ing cottage. Emergency repairs
were made on the synagogue and
second day Rosh Hashonah serv
ices were held.
Although the suburb is in an
area forbidden to foreign diplo
mats and correspondents, the
American businessman was able
to visit the scene and coroborate
the facts which had been report
ed to the Jewish community in
Moscow. The arson attempts re
ports did not appear in the So
viet press.
The American said that after
the two fires, leaflets were found
near the two buildings charging
Soviet Jews with disloyalty to
the Soviet Union. The heading of
one leaflet read: “Death to the
Jews—Save the Revolution.”
Earlier incidents included throw
ing of stones at the synagogue,
defacement of the altar and de

by Max Cuba, General Chair

“The purpose of the drive is
to secure payment of all out
standing pledges to the 1959
campaign,’' Mr. Cuba stated.
"Atlanta's drive is part of a
nationwide effort in hundreds of
communities to raise at least
$35,000,000 in cash by the end of
the year for the humanitarian
work of the United Jewish Ap
peal.
“I am confident that our com
munity will make a maximum
effort to obtain its share of this
nationwide goal. We will make
every effort to raise at least hall
of our community’s cash goal by
November 2nd, so that it can be
presented in Israel the UJA

tinued.
Mr. Ctiba listed the following
needs as among the most urgent
facing the agencies of the UJA:
1) Providing initial housing
and other resettlement aid to al
most 30,000 immigrants of recent
months in Israel.
2) Construction of acceptable
housing for some 85,000 immi
grants of previous years still
living in immigrant shanty-towns
or other substandard dwellings.
3) Provision of farm tools,
livestock, irrigation and other
aid to some 482 farm settlements

Mr. Cuba said. “Now we are in
urgent need of the cash that was
pledged to help carry out the
vital work. We know our people
will respond to this call,” he
concluded.

Join Teaching Staff
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Two
hundred immigrants who arriv
ed in Israel this year, have al
ready joined the country’s teach
ing staff, the Ministry of Educa
tion announced this week.
The newcomers, who have
academic qualifications and con
siderable experience in their
countries of origin, were able to
begin teaching this year by at
tending special orientation and
language courses organized by
the Education Ministry. Another
100 immigrant teachers are cur
rently attending training courses
for a year, during which time
the Ministry and the Jewish
Agency support the teachers
and their families.
Desr
Kol llaam, the Communist daily
here, it was reported reliably
here that the arson and the
spreading of anti-Semitic leaf
lets in the area by the arsonists
not only definitely did happen
but also that it was widely
known in Moscow where the
news spread quickly among Mos
cow Jews.
Israel circles are convinced that
the Soviet regime did not intend
the arson and might have been
shocked by it. They felt, how
ever, that Soviet authorities
should look into a possible con
nection between the arson and
'the anti-Semitic tone of many ar
ticles published in various Com
munist newspapers in Russia,
particularly in tne Ukraine.
Michael Kraft Appointed Grand
Marshall of Big Month for Israel
Toddle Tyke Company, an At
lanta concern manufacturing in
fants wear. His wife is the form
er Raye Harris. They have two
children, Jerry and Sheila.
In accepting the post Mr. Kraft
stated “My recent visit to Israel
convinced me that nothing has
changed the face and future of
Israel more than our investments
of Israel Bond dollars. Every
where we went there was con
crete evidence of the new homes,
roads, factories, harbors and
flourishing farms, resulting from
the flow of investment capital
to that marvelous litle Nation.
I can think of no better way to
serve the well-being and securi
ty of two million of my co-reli-
gonists than to urge every family
in Atlanta to buy at least one
Israel Bond this year.”
Mr. Rittenbaum and Miss.
Sugarman announced that a
corps of 200 volunteers will
serve under Mr. Kraft’s direction
visiting every family in Atlanta
during the Month of November
to sell a minimum of 1,000 Israel
Bonds in this community for
1959.
