TEL AVIV, (JTA)— Discovery
of a gas well described as “very
rich,” in drilling in an area just
west of the Dead Sea, in South
ern Israel, has been announced
here by the Naptha National Oil
Company.
The new strike is the fourth
gas well brought up by the drill
ing, and at least five more drill
ings are now envisaged by the
company’s geologists. The latest
well yields gas of very rich, al
most pure methane, content, the
experts said. It may be usable
for large industrial enterprises
like power stations, or as raw
material for the petro-chemical
industry.
Following the announcement
of the new gas discovery, Fi
nance Minister Levi Eshkol told
a press conference that Israel
is now planning construction of
a gas pipeline to the Dead Sea
potash works which are now
using large quantities of oil-gas
and other fuels. The pipeline
would be about 18 miles in
length, of four-inch diameter,
and would cost about 700,000
Israeli pounds.
A still more ambitious plan
envisages the laying of a gas
pipeline from the new gas field
to Ashdot to supply the local
power station with fuel, as well
as to provide fuel for large in
dustries in Oron, where phos
phates are produced, and for the
clay industry at Beersheba. The
new gas field will be named
“Zohar.”
Other companies having con
cessions in the area will be com
pelled, under the law, to start
drilling within six months after
the field has been officially pro
claimed, Government circles de
clared.
Discovery of the new, rich gas
field came almost four years
since the first discovery of oil
in the Ileletz area which now

Israeli Welcomes
Women Leadership
“Little notice has been taken
of the fact that Israel is now
being ruled by a woman,” writes
a correspondent. (Male, to judge
by the name).
Mrs. Golda Meif is not only
Foreign Minister at the moment,
but Acting Prime Minister and
Minister of Defense. “This is
unique not only in Israel’s an
cient and modern history, but
also in the world.” (B.G. was on
vacation in France).
We may add to this that in
the absence of Dr. Nahum Nir,
the Knesset Speaker, Mrs. Beba
Idelson has been appointed Act
ing Speaker. Should the Presi
dent decide to go on a visit
abroad—say a cruise to Italy
and back—Mrs. Idelson would
also become Acting President.
Just around the corner from
the Prime Minister’s Office,
where Mrs. Meir now wields su
preme power, is the Chief Rab
binate, including the rabbinical
courts, where her evidence
would be acceptable, together
with that of infants and morons.
This discrepancy seems to us
to prove once and for all that
Israel cannot be a theocratic
state, as some people say.

Krishna Menon Tells
India's Stand on Israel
UNITED NATIONS, N. Y.,
(JTA)—India would not be per
forming a useful service if it
established direct diplomatic re
lations with Israel at the pres
ent time, V. K. Krishna Menon,
India’s Defense Minister, de
clared this week.
Mr. Krishna Menon made that
statement in answering a ques
tion at a luncheon tendered him
by the United Nations Corre
spondents Association. Asked
how he justified India’s refusal
to date to establish diplomatic
exchanges with Israel, despite
the fact that many Indians and
Israelis are very friendly, he
said:
“Establishment of such rela
tions at this time would prob
ably Lead to tensions in the area.
We could not change our position
without causing irritation among
the Arab countries. Any future
usefulness that we might have
would only be negated by such •
a change of policy at present—
it is something that would only
make for greater difficulties for
everybody.”
