Authors Tell Throes of Creating Score
For “Fruman Comedy” Set for Nov. 21-22-23
Time and talent aren’t the
only ingredients that go into the
succesful recipe tor a show: It
also takes one salami, about six
pounds of potato chips, gallons
of soft drinks, cookies, popcorn,
coffee and similar stimulants.
The cast of the annual B’nai
B’rith show didn’t consume all
those goodies. No, they were
used to feed four hungry au
thors in search of a plot, the
plot that has become “The Fru
man Comedy.”

Kieve Landesberg, Ted Levitas
and Norman Shavin. The quartet
is credited with the “book,”
while Saul devised the lyrics
and Landesberg also wrote the
musical score.
“We first sat down to write
the play in early February, I
believe,” said Saul. “We would
meet at each other’s house—de

up enough food.”
“The salami was mine,”
Landesberg recalled. “We polish-

“I imagine we discarded five
or six strong ideas,” said Shavin,
who is also directing the play.
“At one point, in midsummer, we
junked the plot we'd been work

started a new one.”
“As it turned out,” Saul
chimed in, “we kept the original
idea and used part of the sec

version.”

They wrote, rewrote and revised
repeatedly until they were satis
fied that music and lyrics not
only suited the mood of the
comedy but that they also pro

“We wanted something better
than the usual musical play,”
Levitas observed. “The ordinary
musical comedy has a very
slight plot framework on which
the tunes and dances are hung.
In ‘The Fruman Comedy,’ we’ve
got a very strong plot—so strong
that it can stand with or with
