Young Writer
Wins France*8
Highest Award
PARIS, (JTA)—A 31-year-old
Jewish metal-worker, Andre
Schwarz-Bardt, was named as
winner of the Prix Goncourt,
France’s outstanding literary
award, for his novel, “Les Der-
niers des Justes,” (“The Last of
the Just,’’) which deals with the
plight of the Jewish mother
through the ages. The book has
enjoyed an unparalleled popular
and critical success here.
Schwarz-Bardt was born in
Metz of Polish-Jewish parents
who had migrated to France in
1924. His father was a peddler.
The young writer lost both his
parents and most of his family
during the Hitler persecutions.
The Prix Goncourt is tradi
tionally awarded on the first
Monday in December but the
selection committee advanced
the date this year because of re
ports that the judges of the Prix
Femina, a major award, had also
selected the young Jewish writ
er to receive that award.
The Schwarz-Bardt book has
been the target of criticism and
lagiarism because it has a num-
er of citations and quotations,
including lines from Mendele
Mocher Sforim, without attribu
tion.
Oldest Philadelphia
Congregation Elects
1st Woman to Board
PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
Mikveh Israel, the second oldest
synagogue in the United States
and the oldest in this city, has
broken a tradition going back
more than two centuries by
electing a woman to the board
of managers, it has been dis
closed.
She is Dr. Lillian S. Alpers,
chief of the arthritic clinic at the
Women’s Medical College, where
she also lectures on marriage
counselling.
Last April, the 219-year-old
Orthodox Spanish-P o rt u g e s e
congregation amended its consti
tution to eliminate a long-stand
ing clause that only males were
eligible to become members of
the board of managers. The ac
tion, taken for the first time in
the election of Dr. Alpers, also
made women eligible as officers
of the congregation. David Arons,
president of the synagogue, said
the election of a woman to the
board would not alter the ortho
dox custom of permitting only
men to conduct services.
Dr. Alpers’ husband, Dr. Ber
nard Alpers, head of the Neu
rology Department at Jefferson
Medical College, is vice president
of Mikveh Israel.
World Capitals
Rush Aid to Lad
Hurt in Ghana
LONDON, Nov. 16 (JTA)Some
of the world’s outstanding neuro
surgeons had responded today to
broadcast pleas for emergency
aid for an eight-year-old Israeli
boy who was critically injured
in an automobile accident on
Saturday in Accra, Ghana.*
In response to a radio plea
from the Israel Embassy at
Accra, the Foreign Ministry in
Jerusalem arranged for Dr. A.
A. Ashkenazi to be flown there.
In London, answering the plea
from President Kwame Nkruma,
the Royal Air Force sent its top
neuro-surgeon, Dr. Harvey Jack-
son. In Paris, on receipt of the
intercepted appeal from Accra,
Dr. M. Feld, outstanding French
neurologist, took off in a United
States Air Force plane. All three
met in Rome as they awaited
transportation to Accra.
Meanwhile, a Greenville, N.C.,
radio amateur, Charles T. Wells,
Jr., who intercepted the Accra
radio calls, notified the Israel
Embassy in Washington which,
in turn, informed the State De-
B artment. The Department of
•efense made arrangements for
Lt. Cmdr. Ivan S. Altman, naval
surgeon, to be flown in from
Port Lyautey. Cmdr. Altman and
an associate arrived in Accra
this week and immediately ex
amined the injured boy, Rami
Katz. They decided to defer op
erating until after 36 hours of
observation.
Mrs. Dina Kaufman, wife of
A. Kaufman, an Israeli engineer,
was killed in the car crash Sat
urday in which the Katz boy
was injured. Her husband was
badly injured and was taken to
a hospital.

Shearith Israels
Auction Inspires
Advance Approval
“A bargain hunter’s paradise,”
said Mr. M. D. Horowitz, Auc
tion co-chairman, in speaking of
Shearith Israel’s annual auction
to be held on Sunday, Nov. 22,
in the Social Hall at 1180 Uni
versity Drive, N.E.
The auction will begin at 7:00
p.m. and will continue till sell
out.
“Food will be available at rea
sonable prices, so forget about
preparing dinner at home—no
dishes to wash when you eat
with us. Come early, so you
won’t miss bidding on a single
item.” This was the advice of
Mrs. Mike Beckman, food chair
man.
From Mr. Sidney Gaber, color
ful auctioneer—“This will be an
evening long remembered.
Everyone will have an equal
chance to purchase every item
offered. Nothing will be with
drawn—every lot offered will go
to the highest bidder. This is
a wonderful opportunity to buy
those Chanukah gifts, birthday
and anniversary presents. Every
one’s invited to come with your
friends and your money.”
Mrs. Edward F. Sternberg,
auction co-chairman, asserted,
“There will be something for
everyone. For the housewife
with an urge to re-do a room,
we have some beautiful lamps,
wall clocks, and pictures. For
the thoughtful husband, there
will be lovely gift items for the
wife — perfume and cosmetics
donated by the country’s lead
ing firms, lovely sweaters and
blouses, slacks and robes. (Wives,
we’ll have something for the
boys, too.)
For the glamour-girl—bee-u-
ti-ful glamorous jewelry. For
the children—lots of toys and
games. For the antique lovers,
some magnificent pieces from
Atlantas leading dealers. “We
have hundreds of brand new
books, some autographed — all
well-known and widely read.
The newest in cookware—color
ful Italian cook and serve pieces.
Scads of electrical appliances
everyone can use. We will have
literally everything from soup
to nuts—and this includes cases
of food-stuffs. There will be
something for everyone — so
everyone come and get your
share of the year’s most out
standing bargains.”
