A letter from the Jewish Di
gest, published in Houston, Tex
as, tells me that the Digest has
just conducted a symposium on
the question: “Could a Jew be
elected President of the United
States in this generation?"
Forty-seven leading Republic
ans and Democrats (including
President Eisenhower and Vice
President Nixon, Harry Truman
and Adlai Stevenson) were asked
the question.
Forty-eight percent of those
who replied said they definitely
believed a Jew could be elected
President in this generation. The
other 42 percent seemed not so
sure that a Jew could be elected
President in this generation, but
they were hopeful: “That before
too long the electorate would do
away with the tacit religious test
traditionally barring all but
white Protestants from the Pre
sidency and the Vice-Presiden
cy”
Well, this caused me to feel
hopeful as to my own household
which includes seven grandchil
dren of whom three are teen-age
boys in high school . . . Jan, Paul
and Rickey. Yes, if it is possible
that a Jew can be elected Pres
ident in this generation, why not
Jan, Paul or Rickey some day.
And how to bring these boys
up toward one of them becoming
President of the United States?
Maybe one of them can make it.
So some day soon I must bring
the three boys together and speak
up to them toward their possible
future in the White House.
“Jan, Paul and Rickey, I’ve
been reading that even in our
time some Jewish boy may grow
up to become President of the
U.S. ... I like to think he may be
one of you. Maybe it’s about time
for you boys to start growing up
that way ... in that direction,
that is.
“Yes, I know that you already
have problerris . . . such as the
family car, and whether they’ll
let you drive it tonight ... or

which girl you’ll date for that
dance next week? But the possi
bility of one of you becoming
President of the U.S. brings up
personal questions even more
serious than that. The main
question is how you’re to grow
up to be fit to be President
when your time comes. In order
to speak to you about this, I’ve
brought you together here to
night.”
They are fairly smart kids and
I can well guess that one of them
will burst out with the question,
“Aw, grandpa, do you expect us
to be angels?”
And another may tell me, “You
know, grandpa, all the Presidents
haven’t been angels.” (He has
been studying American history
which has told him that Presi
dents have been Democrats and
Republicans rather than angels.)
In reply I tell ’em, speaking
sermonically: “I don’t call on any
of you to turn out to be an an
gel, all I ask of you is to turn
out to be noble Jews who by
character are worthy to be Pres
ident of the U.S. That’s the main
thing.”
At this one of them asks,
“Grandpa, what’s the difference
whether a President is a Jew, a
Catholic or a Protestant or
doesn’t belong to any church?
Your talk is so foolish, grandpa.
What’s the difference if the Pres
ident eats kosher or not or puts
on t’fillim in the morning?”
(Those kids are sharp).
“Boys,” I go on, “I’m not think
ing at all of a President who’ll
be all kosher or put on t’fillim
in the morning. My idea has to
do with a Jew whose head stands
as high as Mt. Sinai. He lives by
the teachings of the Ten Com
mandments and by the Prophets.
That makes a great man . . .one
who deserves to be President of
the U.S. . . . whether he’s Jew,
Catholic or Protestant.
“But I am speaking in par
ticular to you as Jews ... to
get you started toward growing
up worthily toward becoming
President. As I’ve just reported
to you, notable politicians have
said that a Jew could bq elected
President in this generation . . .
and maybe one of you can be
that guy.
“You see, to b<- a worthy Jew
is to be a man of high character,
and high character is the best
that’s in a Presidential candidate
. . . whether he’s Republican or
Democrat, or of whatever reli
gion.
“I am speaking to the three of
you as Jews, to tell you how as
Jews you can make yourselves
fit men for the Presidency . . .
if, as I’ve already said, your
heads reach as high as Sinai.
(But you should also he getting
A’s on your school reports, rath
er than C’s.)
“So get yourselves started,
boys. Herewith 1 nominate each
of you for President of the U.S.
toward the election in the year
1984. One of you fnay get it by
that time, if you behave your
selves as worth-while men . . .
and that's the main end of being
Jewish.”
“But suppose none of us gets
that nomination after all,” I can
imagine Jan asking.
“And suppose there are still
a lot of those people who won’t
want any of us Jews for Presi
dent even as far off as the year
! 1984,” Paul inquires. “What Le-
icomes of us then?”
x And Rickey, who’s the young
est: “Yeah, that’s it!”
“Well,” I reply, “to be a good
Jew means mainly to be a worthy
man, and boys, that’s the main
Friday, November 20, 1959
thing of living. So run along to
ward Sinai on which you can
stand high even if you don’t ev
er get to be President.”
