ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., (JTA)
-—Plans for publication of the
first Orthodox Jewish Prayer-
book in Braille were approved
this week by 700 delegates at the
36th annual national convention
of the "Women’s Branch of the
Union of Orthodox Jewish Con
gregations of America.
The plan was presented by
Mrs. Isidor Freedman of New
York City, chairman for the pro
ject, who said the Prayerbook
would be published in coopera
tion with the Jewish Braille So
ciety. She said the two-volume
Prayerbook would be published
in a first edition of 400 coupies,
explaining that a Women’s
Branch survey had indicated re
quests for more than 350 such
Prayerbooks for traditionalist
Jews who are blind. The Prayer-
books will be published in about
a year, she said.
The “national origins” basis of
admissions to the United States
in present immigration laws was
assailed as “discriminatory and
a blot on America’s good name”
at the convention.
The delegates urged that the
national origin basis should be
eliminated when Congress re
convenes in January. In the
resolution, the delegates also
urged Congress to approve the
of the meeting under the direc
tion of the Youth Aliyah chair
man, Mrs. J. S. Fink. Partici
pants will be the Seniors, Sis
ters of Judaea and they will
demonstrate how the spirit of
I s r a e 1 i youth “comes to us
through our own young people.”
Committee, and Mrs. Bernard
Howard, Mrs. Sidney Q. Janus,
Mrs. Harold E. Marcus, ar\d Mrs.

tors and past presidents of the
chapter.

request of the US. Attorney
General, William P. Rogers, for
authorization to apply annually
lapsed quotas from countries
which do not use them to coun
tires “where regrettably low
quotas are each year quickly
filled” because of “limitations”
imposed by the national origins
basis.
In another resolution, the dele
gates urged Congress to adopt
a resolution to clarify the “vital
religious distinction" in regard
to Americans who do not observe
Sunday as their day of rest. The
delegates proposed such a Con
gressional resolution "as a guide
to states in their handling” of
Sunday closing laws. The re
quested resolution, the delegates
said, should affirm the right “of
those Americans who do not
recognize Sunday as a religious
ly-based rest day to do so with
out economic penalty.”
