If we didn’t know the book
for “The Fruman Comedy” was
written months and months ago,
we’d suspect Authors Kieve
Landesberg, Ted Levitas, Alvin
Saul and Norman Shavin got
their idea about a Jew in the
White House from a recent issue
of The Southern Israelite.
Not that it was our idea. We
merely reported on a Jewish
Digest poll of several politicos
on the subject. (Mostly they felt
“yes.”)
But great ideas often spring
up simultaneously in scattered
and apparently isolated loca
tions. Source of this idea how
ever is not nearly as important
as how the quartette parlayed
it into a vivacious, intriguing
musical, undoubtedly the most
professional staged so far by
Atlanta Lodge, B’nai B’rith.
With an entirely original book,
original lyrics and original mu
sic, the production got off. to a
noteworthy start in its very
earliest stages. Usually to cast
such an amateur show, there
must be great cajoling for peo
ple to take parts and to go
through the great amount of
work involved in rehearsals,
etc. So much talent volunteered
in the try-outs that the pro
ducers were able to select per
sons best suited to the particu-

lars roles the authors had in the
script. Usually the script has to
be adapted around the available
cast.
The result was a smooth-run
ning show with sparkling wit,
shanie (we’ve got to drop some
mama loschen in this review
somewhhere in acknowledge
ment for the Yiddish patter in
the script) faces and figures
where these were important,
notably on the feminine east
members, and a most intriguing
fresh plot.
Briefly the story is about an
assistant Notre Dame Coach
with the name of “Fruman,”
who through a series of voting
machine misspelling errors, lands
in the white House in 1948 in
stead of a guy with a strikingly
similar label.
Jerry Gilbert is terrific as the
coach and Anne Lewis as his
wife. Pert Julie Weiss—she can
sing too, by golly!—is winsome
as the Fruman daughter. Ralph
Sacks does well as a Jewish pro
fessor at N.D., almost as in
credible an idea as a Jew in the
W.H.
Fantastic vitality and delight
ful talent were displayed by the
whole list of bit and character
parts—Perry Morris, Dave Eisen-
berg, Herb Lewis, Jerry Gold
smith, Jimmie Kaufman, Jerry
Berman. Marilyn Furchgott,
Leonard Meyer, Buddy Shartar,
Jane Kaufmann and Jack Rous-
so, who took so many parts we
never knew what disguise he’d
take next.
Robert and Virginia (Rich)
Barnett performed an exquisite
ballet number.
Like the proverbial commer
cial about if you haven’t got it
up front of the filter, then it’s
no use, “The Fruman Comedy”
produced many new dancers
who most assuredly have got it
where it counts most. We were
not tired yet of the pretties who
starred and danced in previous
community shows. Some of these
have evidently retired from
such strenuous things as musi
cals and others are too busy
creating families. So almost a
new generation of refreshing
faces and figures fatale appear
ed in the well-trained choruses.
Personally we go for choruses.
No matter how well the special
ty numbers and stars perform,
if a show hasn’t got it in the
choruses, well ... It takes an
extremely powerful theme to
make Up for this loss.
TFC has both the powerful
leads and a comely and shapely
chorus, with such undulating
charms and gay costumes as
fitted our most esoteric ideas in
the theatrical sense of course.
Spacewise, we’ll have to lump
all the women’s chorus members
in one heap—Blanche Gordon,
Ellen Goldman, Jean Cooper,
Shirley Blaine, Doris Kaufman,
Dale Levenstiem, Shirley Tenen-
baum, Irene Seligman, Temi Sil
ver, Rene Weinstein, Roslyn
Saul, Alice Kaplan, Charlotte
Lewis, Jackie Wolf, Rita Joel,
Barbara Friedland, Esther Hirsh,
Anne Diamond, Shirley Gilbert,
Doreen Bryan. And what a
lovely, lovely heap of pulchri
tude!
We can’t say as much for the
men’s chorus—Marshall Hirsch,
Larry Greenberg, Sy Lewis, Al
vin Greenberg, Bob Goldsmith,
Harris Jacobs, Julian Turk,
Leonard Seligman, Norman Dia
mond—as far as beauty goes.
Personally we prefer the femi
nine type of choruses. Their
terpsichore, however, was quite
professional and executed at
times when the men had to be
singing. This they did well too.
We sometimes wonder at ama
teur musicals such as this if a
stranger, not knowing any of the
cast, would enjoy the show.
In the case of TFC, (hoy would
—thanks to the enthusiastic and
talented cast, the versatile au
thors, lyricists and composer,
choregrapher Hildegarde Ben
nett, musical director Frances
Wallace, set designer Herbert
Karp and the many others who
made this show such an artistic
and entertaining success.
The special interest of know
ing some of the cast is simply a
bonus in the case of TFC. We
only wish we knew them all.
As one first-nighter said, ‘Tve
often paid more to see a Broad
way show which was not nearly
so good.”
TFC was every bit that good.
