sons, law-student Jesse Choper, a
great-grandson of the renowned
Cantor Joshe Altschul, had been
chosen by Chief Justice Earl
Warren of the US. Supreme
Court to be his clerk for the com
ing year.
A Wilkes College graduate and
currently a senior in *he Law
School, young Choper has won
many scholastic honors in his
brief career. As an undergradu
ate at Wilkes, he won national
recognition as a debater, ranking
third individually in the U.S. in
1957 and winning the Harvard
International tournament tha*
same year with his partner, John
Bucholtz. After graduating sum-
ma cum laude from Wilkes with
the highest academic average
ever achieved by a Wilkes stu
dent, Choper received a scholar
ship to the University of Penn
sylvania Law School where he
continued to do superior work.
Prior to his appointmept by
Chief Justice Warren, Choper
had accepted a teaching position
at University of Minhesota Law
School, which has now granted
him a leave of absence so that
he may fulfill his new duties in
Washington.
Jesse’s mother, Mrs. Edward
Choper, is the daughter of Rev.
and Mrs. Solomon Hayim (Shle-
ma Hayim) Resnick. Rev. Res-
nick was the cantor in the city of
Grajeve, Poland, and later came
to the U.S. where he died. Mrs.
Resnick, grandmother of Jesse,
was the daughter of the famed
cantor Joshe Altschul who was
called "Joshe Slonimer”—one of
the leading cantors of the age.
One of Cantor Altschul’s best
students was a young lad, now
Cantor Aaron Horowitz who, by
a coincidence, also lives in
Wilkes-Barre where he has
established a national reputation
as a scholar, composer, musician
besides his cantorial eloquence
in the tradition of the great
Atlschul.
