No Infraction if Marines Join Rockwell, Ju c * : •tf. Rules
By MILTON FRIEDMAN

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The sparked by verbal
Marine Corps indicated this past
been
week it had been advised by
the Department of Justice that
affiliation of Marines with neo-
Nazi groups was not illegal.
That was the latest develop
ment growing out of the dis
closure at a hectic Memorial Day
rally staged by Lincoln Rock
well’s American Nazi party that
a Miring stationed at the nearby
Quantico Marine base was one
of his estimated 24 “storm-
ftoopers.”
The Marine was arrested by
military police on Memorial Day
on charges of aiding Rockwell
in the staging of an anti-Jewish
rally here. Hundreds of tourists
were involved in a near-riot.
attacks and
threatening gestures by the
“storm-troopers while Rockwell
sought to incite his auditors
against Jews over a powerful
public address system.
The Marine was freed after
an investigation which showed,
according to Corps authorities,
that there had not been any vio
lation of either Marine Corps
regulations “or the universal
code of military justice.”
Two powerful Senators moved
into the situation. Sen. Leverett
Saltonstall of Massachusetts
ranking Republican on the Sen
ate Armed Services Committee,
indicated he had asked the
Marine Corps Commandant for
a full report. The office of Sen
ate Majority Leader Lydon B.
Johnson. Texas Democrat, also
was studying the participation
of the Marine in Rockwell’s ac
tivities. Sen. Johnson also is a
member of the Armed Services
Committee. '
The Department of Justice
was said to have explained that
Communist groups are danger
ous because of a world Com
munist conspiracy centered in
the Soviet Union. Since thbre is
allegedly no Nazi nation or
world-wide conspiracy, neo-Nazi
organizations are not considered
as objectionable, according to
the Department.
The Marine Corps was inform

has not designated Lincoln

Justice Ministry Sets Eichmann Trial In Jerusalem
JERUSALEM. (JTA)—The Is
rael Ministry of Justice decided
this week that the trial of Adolf
Eichmann, who directed the
killing of 6,000,000 Jews under
the Nazi regime, should be held
in Jerusalem despite other sug
gestions from abroad.
The Foreign Ministry here re
fused to make any comment on
a report from Buenos Aires that
the Argentine Foreign Minister,
Diogene Toboada. had summon
ed Arieh Levavi Israel Ambassa
dor to Argentine, and demanded
that Israel provide him with an
official reporton the reported
abduction of Eichmann from a
suburb in Buenos Aires. The
Foreign Ministry here declined
to say whether such a request
has been made.
The report on Argentina’s re
quest for information from the
Israel Government on the ab
duction of Eichmann was dis
seminated by the Associated
Press whose correspondent in
Buenos Aires said that the
Argentine Foreign Minister had
declared that his government
would formally protest to Israel
if it was proved that Eichmann
was kidnapped in Argentina.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, presi
dent of the World Zionist Or
ganization and * of the World
Jewish Congress, modified his
suggestion that Eichmann should
be tried bv an international tri
bunal. Following a statement bv
Premier David Ben-Gurion
strongly disagreeing with Dr.
Gqldinann. the latter reportedly
proposed that official observers
from other nations who suffered
from Nazi bestialities be invited
to attend the Eichmann trial.
Preparations for the trial
meanwhile continued in several
areas. A public hall having been
decided on as the site for the
trial because Israel courts are
small, the search for such a hall
was being made on the basis
that too big a hall might give an
undesirable impression of a
“show trial.” A 500-seat hall,
providing room for an antici
pated 400 overseas correspond
ents expected for the trial, was
decided on as appropriate.
Meanwhile, a special Inter-
ministerial committee was set
up to decide “news policy and
to coordinate release of informa
tion” on the Eichmann investiga
tion. The committee consists of
representatives of the Govern
ment press office, the Ministries
the MS?anS'the^SeejSrity 1 lleiw-
ices. The committee also will
handle arrangements for press
coverage of the trial.

Southern Israelite’s Inquiring Reporter
Finds Atlantans Vary on Eichmann Case
Atlantans are professing a
deep interest in the case of Is
rael versus Adolf Eichmann,
Nazi war criminal, recently cap
tured and arraigned in the Jew
ish State.
With the case involving al
most an infinite variety of legal
technicalities and moral prob
lems. The Southern Israelite in
quiring reporter posed three
auestions to a number of per
sons. not to conduct a census,
but rather to show what these
people at least were thinking
about Eichmann.
The questions asked were;
What do you think of the
method of capturing Eichmann?
Should Eichmann be tried 1b
Israel?
What do you think should be
dome with him?
Here are some of the results:
Morris Abrams, leading attor
ney. an advocate of civil rights
and himself a former prosecutor
at the Nuremburg War Crimi
nals Trials, stated:
“I was glad to read that the
return of Eichmann was effect
ed. hut I hope that this will aot
cause any international compli
cations. Although I have bo
sympathy for a man involved in
such heinous crimes, I cannot
condone the illegal methods . of
his return. I don’t feel that his
criateo were against the 8tate of
Israel and believe \ his case
should be tried either in Ger
many or by some International
tribunal.”
Sp-4 Morton Esan. Miami. U.S.,
Army. Ft. McPherson, comment
ed:
“I don’t feel that Eichmann
should be tried in Israel, bat by
a coart composed of the leading
powers of the world. He is net
a ceased of an offense against
Israel, but rather an offense
against 'the world. Therefore, he
should be tried in a world court.
It mast be remembered that Is
rael wasn’t even in existence
when these crimes were perpe
trated. Although I don’t approve
of the way he was captured, it
was the line of least resist
ance.”
Harry Robkin. Atlanta musi
cian. had this to say:
“There Is no punishment equal
to the great extent of this in
dividual’s crime. The crime is
oat of keeping with any Banish
ment that I would be capable
of imagining. Although I fee I
that an Israeli court would be
Just and fair, I think that his
trial should be conducted by a
tribunal that would include
representatives of more than
one nation. I don’t condone the
method of his capture, but 1
don’t feel that a criminal such
as this should be protected or
kept from trial and puishment.”
Peter Winterfield, Jackson
ville. graduating Emorv senior, -
stated:
“To he fair, Elchdiann should
be tried before an International
body. The question in my mind
is whether or not the State of
Israel has Jurisdiction in this
matter. Just because he is ac
cused of the murder of some six
millions of Jews doesn’t mean
that Israel should try him.”
Mrs. Hannah Weinstein, At
lanta housewife, herself a refu
gee from Nazi persecution who
lost numerous close relatives be
cause of Eichmann, asserted:
“I approve of his apprehension
because he is such a horrible
criminal and because he has
done so much harm. It Is only
right and proper that Israel
should get a chance to try tho
beast As to what should be
done with him. I have two ans
wers. Prom the emotional side,
I loot so many immediate
members of my family, I think
he should be taken around in
a cage and everybody given a
chance to spit on him. From the
standpoint of Justice. I suppose
he should get the death sent
ence for his murders and that
would be the end of him.”
Armand May. local Jewish
leader and a past president of
the Jewish Children’s Service
stated:
“The law is tho first issue
that should be Considered. Al
though nobody can condone
what this man is accused of, one
most not forget tho concept of
the law. Mass violation of the
law and a nation’s integrity is
the work of a mob. and a mob
is unhealthy. I feel that primary
Jurisdiction is with the govern
ment of Argentina, and that an
international tribunal should be
convened only with the consent
of Argentina. The method of his
capture was neither legal nor
right, and the laws of Argentina
should be respected. If he is
tried in Israel a precedent will
be set that they may deeply re
gret in the future.”
Pavid Satloff. New York,
junior medical student at Emorv
University, said:
“I think that he should be
tried and then freed to suffer
through Ms own psychological
torment. Bo should be tried In
Israel. The crime that he com
mitted la without parallel la the
history of the human race and
was notably directed aot at s
State bat at a people. Be should
be tried In Israel because there
are the final representatives of
the people he so brutally served.

legal Jurisdiction they have a

capture Eichmann was “totally
untrue and unfounded.”
The newsweekly’s story said
that seizure of the Nazi master
criminal took place on May 13.
Shimony said that he left for
Buenos Aires on May 4 and de
parted from there on May 10
and that during that period he
had spent his time obtaining
passage permission for an El
A1 special flight which brought
an Israeli delegation to Argen
tina on a formal visit.
Two well-known lawyers in
Israel were asked to serve as
defense attorneys for Eichmann.
but they categorically rejected
the offer. It was reported. In
the meantime. Minister of Jus
tice PinJias Rosen appealed to
editors of Israeli newspapers to
be reserved in publishing reports
on the developments in the
Eichmann case while the mat
ter is awaiting court action.
The Israel Government press
office officially denied report
which had appeared in The New
York Times speculating that Is
raeli intelligence agents had
slain members of the Eichmann
family in effecting the capture
of Eichmann. The Israelis de
nied that any members of the.
Eichmann family had been
harmed, and described the re
port as a “dastardly conjecture”
and a “baseless invention.”
Asher Ben Nathan, director
general of the Israel Defense
Ministry, disclosed in a state
ment that" the first due to
Eichmann’s where about* was
found in 1946. During that year,
Ben Nathan, who served In the
underground and headed a spe
cial Haganah office in Austria
in the immediate postwar years,
said he met Dieter Wlslieieny.
who was associated with Eich
mann in the extermination of
Hungarian Jewry and who was
later hanged by the Slovaks.
Wislicienv told Ben Nathan
that he had a photo, of Eichmann
and that he knew an St man.
a non-commissioned officer
named Weissell. who could bring
them to a woman who was a
close friend of Eichmann. Ben
Nathan said this proved to be
true. A Haganah man found in
her house the only knowq pic
ture of Eichmann in dviiian
clothes, which was later used
to identify him in the track-
down and capture.
In another development Joel
Brand, described as the man who
during the war negotiated with
Eichmann on the latter’s offer
of Jewish lives for trucks, said
that many more arrests of form
er Nazi leaders could be expect
ed after the seizure at Eichmann
and the arrests in West Ger
many of Herman Krumey. Eidh-
