WASHINGTON. (JTA)—Presi
dent Eisenhower asked Attor
ney General Rogers this past
week to look into neo-Nazi ac
tivities in the Washington, D.C.,
area. The President acted as a
result of a long talk with lead
ers of the Jewish War Veterans.
National J W V Commander
Bernard Abrams, of Jersey City,
N. J., and national executive di
rector Joseph F. Barr, of Wash
ington, called at the White
House. In their presence. Mr.
Eisenhower issued instructions to
an aide that the Attorney Gen
eral be advised of the concern
of the White House over the
increasing neo-Nasi nuisance.
The Justice Department is cur
rently considering whether to
place Lincoln Rockwell’s “Amer
ican* Nasi Party” on the Attor
ney General’s list of subversive
organisations.
The White House asked the
Justice Department to investi
gate the Nazi activities here
with a view to determining
whether a finding of subversion
should be made. The JWV lead
ers asked Mr. Eisenhower to
convene a White House confer
ence of civic and veterans lead
ers to consider the neo-Nazi
problem. They said that subver
sive neo-Nazi act i v i t i e s had
\ emerged in Washington “in the
very shadow of the Capitol
building.” They expressed dis
may that a member of the
Marine Corps is permitted to
participate in the local Nazi
group.
Rep. Seymour Halpern. a
member of the House Commit
tee on Veterans Affairs, ex
pressed concern to the Attor
ney General over member of
the armed forces, veterans, and
government employees in the
so-called “American Nazi Party.”
The New York Republican said
the actions and aims of the local
neo-Nazi group were not in con
formity witht traditions of free
government. Rep. Halpern asked
for a report on a current Justice
Department study of possible
subversion.
The Jewish Labor Committee
urged Mr. Rogers to invoke ap
propriate sections of the Sub
versive Activities Control Act
Against the American Nasi
Party. <
The appeal was made in a
telegram signed by JLC Chair
man Adolph Held, asserting that
the “use of the Nazi symbol and
utilization of Nazi philosophy as
a political base in this country
is subversive to the nation’s best
Interests,” the Jewish Labor
Committee urged that, in con
cert with past practices,” any
segment of-the populace “which
uses bigotry or threats of liqui
dation against any ethnic group
as a political weapon should be
branded forthwith by our Gov
ernment as subversive.”
“While every safeguard to en
sure civil liberties should be
erected, at the same time we
hope that you will make known
to law enforcement officials
throughout the country and to
the press of the world, that no
group in the United States bear
ing the symbol of Nazism has
any place in our political life
or in ,our democratic commun

Over Miami Site
For Jewish School
