SOUTHERN NOTES
It wax a hometown reunion
in Israel recently when the
oaths of several Atlanta travel
ers met at the door of the ZOA
House in Tel Aviv. Mrs. I. F.
Sterne and Mrs. Lily G. Buch-
wald were visiting in Israel on
their global tour which had
taken them west to Japan, In
dia and thence to the Mid-East.
The Dave Slanns had proceeded
eastwards whea their paths
crossed with the other two At
lantans. Regrettably, the Slann
tour was cut short by the ill
ness of Mr. Slann who. with his
wife returned to Boston for
treatment. He is expected to re
main in Boston for several
weeks.
Mrs. Alice Solomon of Win
ston-Salem has been a visitor
in Atlanta with the Melvin J.
Kahanaws and other relatives.
Miss Marilyn Makover. a stu
dent at Cornell U.. has been
spending a few days in Atlanta
with her parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Svlvan Makover, before enroll
ing at Harvard for summer
courses.
Samuel Goldstein of Atlanta
has granduated at the top of his
class in a course of instruction
on hotel management, sponsored
bv the Georgia Hotel Associa
tion. at Smith-Hughes School.
When Brooklyn College held
Commencement exe r c i s e s on
June 5, recognition was given to
Dr. Morris Goldmann, Atlanta,
as "Outstanding Alumnus of
1960.” Dr. Goldmann. a senior
scientist with the United States
Public Health Service, is sta
tioned at the Communicable Dis
ease Center in Chamblee. His
selection was based on achieve
ments in the field of medical
research.
Joe Fiszman, former teacher
of the Workmen’s Circle Schools
in Atlanta, has been appointed
to a full professorship in politi
cal science at the University of
Oregon.
Hildegarde Bennett of Atlan
ta is conducting a two-week
dance camp for ballet pupils at
Camp Blue Star. Henderson
ville. N.C.
Among the graduates at the
recent Commencement exercises
of Georgia Military Academy in
Atlanta was Robert Lewis Rinz-
Ier. son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Rinzler. Howard Maziar, son of
Mr. 'and Mrs. Jack Maziar, and
Barry Warshaw, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Morris Warshaw. fresh
men at GMA, were presented
the Gold Eagle award for scho
larship at the exercises.
Miss Toby Maziar. daughter
of the Jack Maziars of Atlanta,
who attends Ohio State Univer
sity. is spending the summer
with her family.
Friends of Mrs. Harry Popkin
of Atlanta, will be glad to know
that she is doing nicely at Saint
Mary’s Hospital in Rochester,
N.Y.. where she successfully
underwent major surgery re
cently. She and her husband
will return in about ten days to
Camp Blue Star at Henderson
ville.
Isadore C. Hirsch of Columbus
is confined at the Medical Cen
ter there and is convalescing
from his illness, friends will be
glad to know.
Little Nancy David has ar
rived from Summit. N.J.. for a
visit with her grandparents, the
Julian Hirshbergs of Nancy
Creek Road. Her mother, Mrs.
Edward David, who accompan
ied her -to Atlanta, has returned
home.
Mrs. George Goldman, Mrs.
Louis Rosenberg and Mrs. Mike
Parver were hostesses recently
at a bridal shower in honor of
bride-elect. Eileen Bock, at the
Progressive Club.
Mrs. Ike Sunshine and daugh
ter. Esther Jane, of Toledo, Ohio,
are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alex
Aronoff of Atlanta.

eral weeks during the peach
season with their mother, Mrs.
Mose Solomon of Fort Valley,
Ga. Also visiting Mrs. Solomon

liam Crystal, of Atlanta.
Miss Ilene Lichtenstein, At
lanta. and Miss Rochelle Barron,
Monck’s Corner, S.C., roommates
at the University of Georgia
for three years, are motoring to
Boston where they plan to make
their home.

To Install Officers
A joint installation and victory
dinner will be held by the Beth
Jacob Congregation. Sisterhood
and Men’s Club on Sunday,
June 19. 7 p.m., at the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center.
Guest speaker for the affair
will be Rabbi Abraham I. Rosen
berg of the B’nai B’rith Jacob
Congregation of Savannah. A
member of the Savannah com
munity for the past sixteen
years. Rabbi Rosenberg is a vice
president of the Rabbinical
Council of America and is cur
rently the Southern chairman
for the group.

Mrs. Louis Taffel, Mrs. Maurice

Fish Fry, Picnic
June 26 at Piedmont
Members of Atlanta’s Work
men’s Circle units will have
their fifty-third annual picnic
and fish fry on Sunday, June 26
Food will be served from noon
until 3 p.m. at the Piedmont
Park Pavilion at a dollar a plate
and the public is invited.
Proceeds from the picnic are
used to sustain the Workmen’s
Circle cultural activities in At
lanta and the Southern District
of the organization.
