Eichmapn Is a Beast
But Israel Is Wrong
There Me» few indeed who
can feel Sympathy for Adolf
Eichmann. the man charred with
responsibility for the death of
six million Jews in Europe dur
ing Hitler’s mad rule. There is
no episode jn history 'more
shameful.
But in the * controversy now
raring betweeh Argentina and
Israel over abduction of Eich
mann from hit South Ameri
can hiding place, the Israelis
are in the wroi*. The national
sovereignty of Argentina has
been violated and the crimes of
Eichmann do not excase such
flaunting- -of international *taw.
If Eichmann thus can be kid
naped. what is to prevent the
same thing happening in this
country, be the individual you
or ipe? If Israel’s action is right,
what is to prevent ahy country
from using the same tactics to
seise persons they might like to
have out of the way?
Eichmann’s crime whs against
humanity and if he is tp be tried
it should be before an interna
tional court. Israel is wrong to
attempt unilateral action and
world opinion will not support
her violation of international
rules.
—Atlanta Constitution
The Eichmann Case
That Mafia and Ku Klux Klan
tactics are not confined to Sici
lians and a segment of citizens
of the Southern part of the
United States is shown by the
kidnaping of Adolf Eichmann.
This butcher of Jews under
Adolf Hitler was taken to Israel
from his hiding place in Argen
tina in an international exhibi
tion of what might yet be called
lynch law.
Israel shows an understand
able reluctance to surrender
Eichmann to Argentine authori
ties in view of his vicious rec
ord and crimes against human
ity.
But Argentina is right in pro
testing this act as a fundamental
violation of her sovereignty.
In its simplest terms it is a
case of emotion versus due pro
cess of law. a conflict that Is
familiar to the South.
It wil be a tragedy if emotion
wins. No matter how desirable
the cause (in this case the pun
ishment of Eichmann). the
means used to bring it about
cannot be justified.

Eichmann’s Right to Fair
Trial Guaranteed
by Israel
Israel's insistence that Rudolf
Eichmann be given a fair trial
in spite of his notorious record
as a master war criminal, re
sponsible for the brutal killing
of thousands of Jews, must be
viewed as further evidence that
the young Middle East nation is
living true to the highest prin
ciples of pure democracy.
In many a land today, espe
cially behind the Iron Curtain,
this human monster would be
out to death without even the
faintest semblance of a hearing.
But the Israeli authorities have
announced that he will be al
lowed to summon witnesses in
his behalf and to have counsel.
This does not mean, of course,
that he will not face the sever
est prosecution which his case
justifies. There is no doubt of
his guilt. But the concept of
western democracy demands
that even the most guilty shall
be given the opportunity of de
fense and that Eichmann will
receive in full measure.
The death penalty can be
asked and no doubt will. While
Israel has outlawed capital pun
ishment. it still retains the su
preme penalty for war crimes
against the Jewish people.
Whether those in • Israel—and
elsewhere—opposing capital pun
ishment will have the strength
of their convictions in a case
as flagrant and atrocious as
Eichmann’s remains to be seen.

Letter to the Editor
Dear Adolph:
Your editorial of June 10th is
an exceptionally fine piece of
writing. Indeed, it had to be in
order to fully cover up the
naked triviality of the issue you
raised.
You call the capture of geno
cide expert Adolph Eichmann a
“commando-t y p e apprehension
which constitutes such a breach
of integrity and honor in the
image we wish for Israel that we
consider the act represensible.”
In order to fit into the cate

sign it, the act of nabbing Eich

a crime involving moral turpi
tude.
Let us examine both. The first
will need some explanation, the
second only a conscience.
There are two legal points on
which Israel can rely. One is
that, since Eichmann was never
resident in Argentina under his
own name. Buenos Aires can
not very well ask for “his re
turn.” The other is Lord God
dard’s dictum that the method
bv which a person is apprehend
ed does not affect the validity of
his trial.
Unless we take the position
that this monstrous fiend should
go scot-free rather than that one
inch of precious Argentinian
soil should suffer a technical in
fraction — which is apparently
the position of The Southern
Israelite—there was only one
wav to apprehend him. namely
by the method of abduction
which the Israelis used. There
is. at present, no extradition
treaty in force between Israel
and Argentina: and it is precise
ly because of the absence of
such a treaty between Argen
tina and West Germany, that
Argentina refused the demand
of the German Federal Republic
in 1952 for the extradition of
Karl Klingenfuss. accused of
participation in the wartime
mass murders of Jews.

The columnist Roscoe Drum

security police of Israel in cap

of the unearned dividends re
sulting from the creation of the
Israeli nation . . . the Jews of

powerful incentive to track
down this brutal mass murderer

Too bad that this thought did
not occur to the Jewish editor
of The Southern Israelite; and
that he fails to see the hand of
providence which delivered this
arch-exterminator of one third
of our people to be judged by
the survivors and descendants
