June 6, I960
Dear Mr. Rosenberg:
It was with aorrow and dis
may that I read your flowery
and grandiose editorial of June
10th, condemning Israel. With
out going into the rights and
wrongs of the so-called kidnap
ping, I think it might have been
wiser and certainly kinder if
you had watited until all the
facts are in. Even our State de
partment, who in our wildest
dreams could not be accused of
being pro-Israel, is divided in
her opinion of Israel's actions.
Such kindness and patience was
not forthcoming from the South
ern Israelite!
Yoti mentioned the kidnapping
of a Cuban professor. I do not
recall an editorial from you at
Jhat time denouncing Cuba. Nor
dp I remember an outcry from
official United States. Certainly
the case was not taken to the
UN for questioning. Is the Sou
thern Israelite so afraid of its
gentile neighbors that it is the
first to condemn its people? Of
what is the Southern Israel
afraid?
Eichmann was not once but
twice a prisoner of war of the
Allies. He either escaped or was
permitted to escape both times.
It was been said and not de
nied by Western Germany that
they knew of his hiding place
in Argentina. Did they make an

effort to bring him to justice?
For that matter, did any nation
of the free world? Hardly! What
do Jews matter' to them. Six
million more or less. It remained
for Israel alone to do the work
of the entire free world.
A few weeks ago Mr. Eisen
hower and his party were re
sponsible for the failure of the
summit conference. Our great
nation was caught spying and
lying. Your reaction was that
we should rally to the support
of our leader, right or wrong.
I could find it in my heart to
wish that you had advised your
readers to do the same towards
Mr. Ben-Gurion.
One last comment, If I may.
You say “our grief will not be
assuaged . . .” Maybe not. But
please shift your eyes ever so
silghtly to the right, to the arti
cle in the column next to your
editorial. If Eichmann’s trial will
bring the horrors of an Eich
mann to the attention of the
world and remind them (if they
ever knew) how easy it is to
drown in Jewish blood, another
such catastrophe may be pre
vented. It is because the world
and its press was blind, deaf,
complacent and afraid to speak
out that a Hitler was possible in
the first place.
Yours very truly,
THERESA REISH
(Mrs. Edward Reish)
No, we did n*t editorialise ou
the Cuban kidnapping. There

CHICAGO, (JTA)—The United

for effective implementation of
the principle of freedom of the

Mr. Nixon also said there was
