UNITED NATIONS, (AJP)—
UN correspondents who recently
visited Germany as guests of a
government embarrassed by the
swastika-smear were told that
one of the reasons why the Bonn
government conceals the bitter
truth about its Nazi past from
school-books is to spare the
children the truth about their
parents.
This is an ingenious alibi,
though hardly a valid one when
the eyes of the same children
can see scores of Nazis behind
the desks of the Foreign Office.
Yet, with some devastating Ger
man logic, the excuse seems to
carry some conviction. Right here
in the United States text-books
do not carry the unsavory de
tails of the barbaric Nazi era—
but hardly to shield children
from the sins of their fathers.
The shielding in the U.S. is more
likely that of an ally in the cold
war.
But what appears to the con
cealment theory now that the
most fiendish chapter in Nazi
savagery will be paraded before
the eyes of the whole world
when the arch-field of the Nazi

JEWISH JOURNALIST
DIES IN MOSCOW
NEW YORK, (JTA) —Moshe
Katz, well known American Yid
dish journalist, and one of the
founders here, in 1922, of the
Communist Jewish newspaper
Morning Freiheit, died in Mos
cow recently, of pneumonia, ac
cording to dispatches received
here. He was 75. He went to
Moscow to visit his daughter
there.
Born in Dokhitz, Russsia, near
Minsk, Mr. Katz came to the
United States in 1913, and work
ed in non-Communist Yiddish
newspapers here. After the Bol
shevik revolution, he returned
to Russia, and edited a non-Com
munist Yiddish newspaper In
Kiev. He later returned to this
country. He was the author of
several books in Yiddish, among
them biographies of I. L. Peretz,
Sholem Aleichem and Lenin.
Funeral services for Mr. Katz
were held in Moscow, arranged
by the Writers Association there.
The body was cremated in the
presence of surviving memberas
ot the family, including the
widow who traveled with Mr.
Katz from New York to Moscow.
past, Adolf Eichmann, will be
brought to trial in Israel? Prime
Minister David Ben-Gurion has
already stated that the trial will
be an open one—as indeed it
must be if Israel is to convince
the world beyond all shadow
of doubt that the trial will be
a fair one and that justice will
not be only a ritualistic act of
vengeance.
Now the children on both
sides of the sea shall be able to
see the grim facts of the past
far more clearly than any dry
text-book can catalogue the kind
of world they have been brought
into.
Moreover, what is important
here is the fact that the scene
will not be confined to the court
room in Jerusalem alone. Al
ready a panicky West Germany
is astir making arrests of con
cealed criminals who are bound
to be incriminated in the Eich
mann evidence. The Germans
have already arrested Eich-
mann’s partner-in-crime Her
mann Krumey; also the former
Nazi police chief of Frankfurt
Adolf Heinz Beckerle whef has
been accused in the complicity
of the destruction of some 12,000
Greek Jews in the Treblinka
concentration camps.
Take note: both these mur
derers were previously arrested
and then released by the Ger
many authorities—a baffling re
lease even in the light of thq
procedure of prima facie evi
dence. The Chief Prosecutor of
Hesse, Dr. Fritz Bauer, has pre
dicted many more arrests. He is
planning to go to Israel with
the view of getting lists of others
whom Eichmann may nave im
plicated already in his confes
sions.
Prosecutor Bauer’s actions are
of course mandatory under the
famous resolution adopted by the
Human Rights Commission call
ing on governments to deal with
and report on all aspects of anti-
Semitisim. Now that the world
knows that Eichmann was spirit
ed out of the Argentine it will
be rather difficult for that gov
ernment to protest in the light
of that much-publicized resolu
tion or the UN Convention on
Genocide. The German Gov
ernment—to show its good faith
in cooperation with any attempt
to bring Nazi war criminals to
justice—has filed a request to
Israel for extration of Eichmann,
though it has no extradition
treaty with Israel. What is real
ly involved is the fact that
Eichmann’s testimony may ex
pose not only war-criminals but
the soft-on-Nazi policy of the
Bonn regime—and even of sortie
of its allies. Hence, not only the
German Federal Republic is
now on the hunt for glossed-
over criminals but other govern
ments as well are on the alert.
With each passing week the
canvass of expose grows larger
and larger and at last the eyes
of the postwar children will aee
the true facta of history.
For world Jewry the Eich
mann trial should prove of the
greatest significance in that it
will show all anti-Semites the
world over that hatred of the
Jew cair result only in one fate
—death! The trial will assured
ly also serve as a warning to
states which make Israel the tar
get of their hate.
Of course, the spirit of veng
eance and bitter memories
should not be nurtured for the
perpetuation of furious hates.
But, this writer asks, how is
mankind going to reform with
each new generation if it con
ceals the true nature of man
and history? Let not nations
hide crimes in the name of the
purity of youth. Such purity is
not to be treated as something
virgin, but as the attainment of
a higher man who has extricated
himself from his lower depths.
Let the Eichmann testimony
run full, friee and unfettered.
Honest men will not be shocked.
Only criminals will fear the
truth.
