PHILADELPHIA. (JTA) —
Most of the 22 history textbooks
used in Philadelphia’s public and
private high schools fail to ex
plain to students the Nazi theory
and practice of racism. The Jew
ish Exponent charged here last
week.
In the second of a series of
articles resulting from a special
study of the high school texts,
the newspaper reveals that most
of the history books “omit the
complete story of Hitlerism.” A
few of the books, it is disclosed,
“don’t even mention anti-Semi
tism” as practiced under the
Hitler regime. The report, citing
various textbooks by title, au
thor and publishers, shows:
1. One textbook picturing Nazi
concentration camps as places
into which “ministers and priests
who objected to policies of fana
tic devotion to the State were
thrown.”
2. Another textbook “which
does not draw the lesson of
racialism” bat makes “the curi
ous error” of stating that 3,000,
000 Jews were victims of Nazism
in concentration camps—instead
of using the confirmed figure of
6,000,000
3. Still another book credits
Hitler with transforming Ger
many into “a united, energetic
nation.” but concedes that the
“gains were won at the cost of
human liberties” and that the
Nazis “persecuted the Jews”—
but does not mention concen
tration camps or genocide.
Throughout most of the texts,
the study shows there is “abys
mal silence” concerning the
systematic murder of Jews un
der the Hitler regime. One text
is denounced as “fantastically
deficient” in this regard. "Cal
culated omissions" were found
in some college texts used in
advanced high school classes in
Philadelphia
One text was found not only

Nazi racial persecutions, but

Fight Bid For Fewer Sessions
At MPLS Talmud Torah
MINNEAPOLIS. (JTA)—Offi
cials of the Talmud Torah of
Minneapolis scheduled a series
of meetings this past week with
leading Jewish and non-Jewish
educators in connection with de
mands by a group of Jewish par
ents seeking to introduce three
day a week sessions into the
program of the noted Jewish
afternoon school.
A group of such parents met
informally according to the
American Jewish World to ask
the school to include in its ele
mentary division program three
day a week classes while main
taining the same total of class
hours. The proposal moved Dr.
Abraham J. Heschel. New York
theologian, and Dr. Mitlon A.
Saffir of Chicago, a psychologist
and educator, to warn against
such changes in the Talmud
Torah program. Dr. Heschel last
week finished an assignment as
guest Professor of Religion at
the University of Minnesota. Dr.
Saffir was a speaker at the mid
west conference of the Union of
Orthodox Jewish Congregations
of America.
Leo Gross, Talmud Torah
president, said that meetings
would be held with the par
ents “against a background of
valid, impartial and best infor
mation available.” Representa
tives of the school’s board met
with Robert A. Bennett, con
sultant in secondary curriculum
of Minneapolis public schools:

of education at the University
of Minnesota, and Dr. Kopphe
Friedman, consultant in social
studies for the Minneapolis pub
lic school system.
Mr. Gross said a meeting was
scheduled with Dr. Abraham
Duker. president of the College
of Jewish Studies of Chicago,
and with other educators to ex
amine the latest research find
ings on foreign language instruc
tion and other subjects related
to those taught at the Talmud
Torah.
The Darents said, in a letter to
Talmud Torah officials, that
they were interested in a He
brew education for their chil
dren but that "a child’s welfare
or other legitimate interests
would make it impossible for all
of our children to attend classes
at the Talmud Torah four or five
days a week.”
They proposed two weekday
afternoons and a double session
on Sunday mornings, stressing
that “we do not ask that the
total hours be reduced but only
that the total sessions be cut.”
There are -1,300 children in
attendance in the school’s main
building and in two branches.
