A Digest of Contemporary Opinion
AGAINST HUMANITY AS A WHOLE
The Eichmann com is one against humanity as a whole . . The
decision to try Eichmann in Israel, despite the understandable satis
faction that can be derived from this grand historic irony, is open
to serious question. As a show trial of this sad century, what is
being planned Js pert of a fateful morality play that began in Ger
many. It should properly end there. Eichmann should be tried in
Germany by the German Republic. Technically he committed no
crime on Israeli territory, and he vq illegally brought there. But
beyond these legal considerations, he should be turned over ta
Germany J'ljJftft tbTYJpBtJiaf and psychological reasons crucial to
the morality theme of this drama. . . Eichmann must not be per
mitted to escape his rendezvous with justice. The case, however, is
not Eichmlnn vs; Israel; It is Eichmann vs. civilized man . .”

Eichman Led Life of Cain
”... He was always on the move . . He traveled from country
to country, fnmucity to city. He changed Jobs, he changed names.
But wherever he went, he lived in constant terror of being killed.
He probably sqw assassins around every comer ... he grew gaunt,
nervous and bald . . . Eichmann had few acquaintances. Even with
his Nazi friends he used a false name. As the years rolled by, he
began to dtspnoN and more to the hope be would be forgotten.
But his tenor never really subsided.” The informants gave these
additional dSails: The end of the trail came for Eichmann four
weeks ago Iw-a Buenos Aires suburb when he stepped off a bus
in the early evening to walk home where his German-born wife
and four children waited for him. A car darted out of traffic and
scheeched tp J halt. Israeli secret agents dragged him inside . . .

The Only Place For Trial
That the storm aroused by
Eichmann’s catJttrre by Israelis
is rising in a crescendo in the
international press is quite ap-
oarent. And. we fear, that as
the dav of trial approaches, the
storm will have increased in
such volume as to shove the
collapse of the Summit off the
front pages.
And the storm is not caused
primarily as to what is a fitting
punishment for the inhuman
monster, Eichmann. It is almost
universally agreed that the civil
ized world has found no pun
ishment. no"tPSfmioue of venge
ance. comparable to the infern
al inhuman crimes committed by
the conscienceless mqnstrositie3
calling themselves Nazis.
WILL OO SIR—
WHEN YOU CALL
But the storm is beginning to
take some sort of shape in legal
istic minds, and a great number
of editorial writers and promi
nent world figures, want either
to have the beast tried outside
of Israel, or. if in Israel, by an
international board of judges.
In other words they insist that
the accused “shall not be tried
bv his accusers.” one of the
basic maxims in democratic,
civilized jurisprudence.
There is even good logic to
support the theory that he be
tried in the country where he
committed his bestial crimes.
But then he would have to be
tried separately in Germany.
Austria. France. Russia. Norway,
Sweden. Yugoslavia. Czechoslo
vakia. Poland: yes. even into
the Latin American countries
and the United States as well,
for the victims of his "solution
of the Jewish problem.” are
now even in the Western hemis
phere. And of course such a
process of change of venure is
unthinkable.
There will be other “fair”
legalistic minds who will want
him returned to Argentine,
where he was apprehended and
alleged to have been kidnapped
bv Israeli commandos.
But in our mind, the fairest,
most logical "locus juris,” the
only place where Eichmann
should be tried, and the atmos
phere in which he should stand
trial is Israel. Even if not sent
enced to hanging, the retributive
force of being tried justly and
humanely by the Jews whom

BONN, (JTA)—A Spokesman
for the West German Govern

mann.
The spokesman said that docu

the Government would not, as
it has in other cases, provide
free defense counsel to the de
fendant.
“We are gratified that the
man who was one of the per
sons chiefly responsible for the
extermination of Jews had been
apprenhended,” the spokesman
said.
