Reform Commission
Supports Student
Demonstrations
A resolution expressing sym
pathy for the sit-in demonstra
tiohs of Southern Negro students
has been forwarded by the Com
mission on Social Action of Re
form Judaism to all members of
the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations.
The Commission urged “the
active support of all Americans
who seek to fulfill the promise
of American freedom," and com
mended the students for the
“courageous and non-violent sit-
in demonstrations on the part
of the Negro young people of
the country”
The Commission represents
the Central Conference of Ameri
can Rabbis and the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
and affiliated bodies.
Anne Greenblatt
To Study in Japan
Miss Anne Greenblatt, dangti
ter of Mr and Mrs. S. R Green
blatt Jr., Atlanta, will travel to
Japan this summer as part of
the 1960 program of The Experi
ment in International Living.
A graduate of Westminster
Schools, she has just completed
her second year at Pembroke
College, Providence, R I. She
is majoring in history, with a
minor in international relations.
The program, designed to aid
American youth in learning of
the peoples of other countries,
has sent more than 12,000 people
overseas during the past 28
years. Each of these students
lives for a month with a foreign
family and spends another
month touring the country.
ADL Announces
Exchange Program
With West Germany
NEW Y*0RK, (JTA) — The
creation of an exchange pro
gram between the Anti-Defama
tion League of B’nai B'rith and
the West German Government,
whereby each will send youth
leaders and human rights ex
perts to learn about problems
and practices of democracy, was
announced hei'e last week at the
executive committee meeting of
th£ ADL.
The announcement was made
by Label A Katz, president of
B’nai B’rith and Henry Edward
Schultz, national president of
the ADL. The program, accord
ing to the two leaders, “involves
an exchange of trained Jewish
community relations leaders and
B’nai B’rith youth workers con
cerned not only with education
itself but with all aspects of
civil affairs, citizenship and dem-
OfiSatic attitudes.”
The first group of Americans,
numbering ten leaders represent
ing the ADL, will undertake its
studies in Germany July 25,
Benjamin R. Epstein, national
director of the ADL, reported.
They will attend seminars and
meetings in West Germany,
meeting with government and
civic officials, youth leaders and
community leaders in Bonn,
Berlin and Dusseldorf At a
later date, a group of German
communal and youth leaders
will come to the United States
as part of the exchange pro
gram.

DATE-NUT SHORTCAKE
1 tin Dromedary Date-Nut Roll
1 cup heavy sweet cream
2 tablespoons confectioners’
sugar
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 package frosen-freah whole
strawberries (or equivalent
In fresh berries)
2 bananas, sliced
Ohiil date-nut roll In re
frigerator to facilitate slicing;
remove roll from tin and cut
Into eight equal slices. Add
sugar and lemon Juice to cream
ami whip till cream holds soft
peaks. Lay one slice of date-nut
roll on each of four serving
K ten, top with berries, sliced
i ana and whipped cream:
add another layer of dato-nut
roll, fruits and cream and chill
until ready to serve.

Here’s a recipe for Honey Nut
Bread that really tastes best
when it is at least 3 days old.
Bake, wrap in aluminum foil
when cold, and use it freely for
making those dainty little cheese
sandwiches cut in small rounds
or triangles to serve with tea
or coffee.
HONEY NUT BREAD
2 tablespoons shortening
1 cup honey
1 egg, weU Mkten
% cup orange juice
I'M tablespoons grated orange
rind
2V4 cups all-purpose flour
2 Vi teaspoons baking powder
*4 teaspoon baking soda
Vi teaspoons salt
Vi cup chopped walnuts or pe
cans
2 tablespoons flour
Cream shortening, adding
honey gradually till well blend
ed. Add beaten egg, orange juice
and grated rind by stirring well
then stir in sifted dry ingred
ients till smooth batter results.
Combine chopped nuts with the
2 tablespoons flour by shaking
together in a paper bag and add
to the batter. Turn into a
greased, aluminum lined 9-inch
loaf pan (allowing long ends
lining pan for bending back on
outer sides of pan). Bake at 325
deg. F. for 1 hour or till the
top is nicely browned and the
loaf stands away from inside of
pan. Let cool before turning out
of pan. Fold the aluminum foil
over top. Wrap in a kitchen
towel or wax paper for storing.
This Loaf Cake keeps moist and
full flavored for days.
Suggestions for filling tea
sandwiches:
1—Cream cheese, chopped nuts,
enough sour cream to soften for
smooth spreading, a dash of
cinnamon or nutmeg.
2—Cream cheese, raspberry or
Strawberry preserves and
Chopped nuts, preferably wal
nuts.
3—Mashed cooked or canned
apricots, well drained then mix
ed with finely chopped or grated
almonds.
Slice bread thin, let stand 15
minutes before spreading filling.
