/46e Goldstein Honored by Hood Tire
Company on Double 40th Anniversary
The birth of a company and
a business association that has
lasted four decades were com
memorated in Atlanta recently
as Abe Goldstein, president of
the Prior Tire Company * was
honored at a special banquet at
the Mayfair Club by the Hood
Tire Company of Akron, Ohio.
More than 100 close friends,
business associates and leading
Atlanta citizens, gathered to
pay tribute to a man who has
risen to become an eminently
successful businessman, a prosni-
ment member of the Atlanta
community and a leader among
the people of his faith.
Highlight of the evening came
when Mr. F. H. Newsom, sales
manager for Hood Tires, formal
ly presented Mr. Goldstein with
a specially engraved plaque
honoring the 40th anniversary
of the association between the
two firms. Mr. Goldstien found-

ed the Prior Tire Company on
January 1, 1920, and has been
the Atlanta distributor of Hood
Tires since that date.
Mr. Newsom also presented
Mr. Goldstein with the only re
maining copy of the very first
Hood Tire Trademark used by
Prior Tire 40 years ago; and a
portfolio of congratulatory let
ters from Hood Tire executives
in Akron.
In addition to Mr. Newsom,
Hood Tire Company officials on
hand for the occasion were
George B. Markle, manager of
jobber and distributor sales,
Akron; William E. Childress,
zone manager, Dallas; and Scott
Morrison, district field man
ager, Atlanta.
In accepting the award Mr.
Goldstein praised his associates
and the employees of Prior Tire
foe their loyalty .and hard? effi-J
cient work through the years.
He commented on the fine busi
ness relationship he has enjoyed
with Hood Tires since 1920,
stressing the excellent factory
cooperation they have provided
in many fields, and their con
tinued production of top quality;
tires at fair prices. ‘
The history of the Prior Tire
Company dates back to 1918)
when Goldstein, then a youth
of 19, worked in his parents
grocery store. He became fas
cinated with the store’s tire de
partment, decided to go into the
tire business for himsplf.
He eventually opened a small
store on Pryor Street, taking pn
the Hood Line and naming his
new company after the name of
the street . . . Pryor. When he
outgrew the location he moved
to larger quarters on Spring
Street, changed the spellin| of
the firm name and opened Prior
Tire Service. Here, as at Ryor
Street, he operated sidewalk
gasoline pumps and changed
customers tires at curbside.
It wasn’t long before he out
grew the Spring street location
and in 1930 he built and moved
into his present location at the
corner of Peachtree and Pine
streets, where the Prior Tire
Company now occupies 100,000
square feet of office, sales, in
ventory and retreading space,
employing a staff of approxi
mately 100.
From those modest beginnings
of 40 years ago, started on a
borrowed $2,000 Prior Tire has
grown into one of the largest
independent tire distributors in
the Southeast The company’s

while Goldstein was put-
tihg /Immense energy into his
gro\iing business, he did not
ignere what he felt was his duty
to Jne community and the in-
du^ry. Says Mr. Goldstein: “You

And so he has.
tie has served on the board of
directors of the National Asso
ciation of Independent Tire Deal

holds an honorary life member
ship in Atlanta’s Junior Cham
ber of Commerce. He is a life
'member of Elks, a 32nd degreq

Shrine. In 1955 he was made a

relationships with them. In my
business, that goes for employees
and customers alike, initially,
we select the proper people to
join our organization and then
we take a sincere interest in
their needs and problems. The
same goes for customers. If a
customer comes to us with a
complaint, he either has one, or
he thinks he has one In either
case he must be treated exactly
the same. No customer of Prior
Tire must be allowed to go away
dissatisfied."
That, in a nutshell, may sum
up the major driving force and
principal contributing factor to
Abe Goldstein’s success.
Abe Goldstein has two part
ners in his Prior Tire Company.
One, his son, Leon; the other,
his son-in-law, Bernard Gordon.
Miss Gertrude Wald is office
manager and tire buyer; Hoyt
McPherson is the firm’s credit
manager. This is the manage
ment team that directs the
firm’s sprawling activities with
hour service; and has done much
to increase the quality of the
industry in’ this city with its
famous Armor retreat tires,
Prior’s exclusive non-skid tread.
Known as a pioneer in the
tire retreading field, Prior has
gained wide recognition as a
user of the most modern, up-to-
date techniqaes and equipment.
Using only 100% cold rubber in
' its retread plant, the firm em
phasizes service, delivering cus
tomers’ retreads in its fleet of
12 trucks, all bearing another
famous slogan: “Here Comes
Help.”
An additional retail outlet at
the Fanners Market provides
additional service for Atlantans.
All told, Prior employs more
than 120 sales, service and office
personnel in its two Atlanta lo
cations.
Abe Goldstein and his wife,
Ruby, have been married 27
