Germans to Seek Evidence Against
Koppe in Eichmann Interrogation
BONN, (JTA) — The Govern
ment Prosecutor ’a Office is like
ly to sendee member of its staff
to Israel to attend the Israeli
police official’s interrogation of
Adolf Eichmann, the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency was inform
ed Tuesday.
If permitted to do so by the
Israeli authorities, the Federal
Attorney said, the German rep
resentative will himself partici
pate in Eichmann’s interrogation.
Specifically, the Federal At
torney stated, he is hopeful that,
through the interrogation of
Eichmann, he might obtain tes
timony bearing on the case of
Wilhelm Koppe, an accused war
criminal under arrest here.
Koppe was apprehended - re
cently on charges that he par
ticipated in the mass murder of
340,000 Jews and Poles jp the
death camp of the Chelmno
Concentration Co m p o u n d, in
Poland.
A number of German papers,
playing up the arrest of Koppe
and the recent convictions of
other prominent ex-Nazis, are
outspoken in insisting that the
Government should have de
manded that Eichmann be extra
dited to this country, for trial
in the German courts.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine
Zeitung conceded that the ab
duction from Argentina of “a
sub-human character like Eich
mann’' was “an extraordinary
case.’’ Nevertheless, this news
paper held, there are “appre
hensions about the violation of
international law” in his cap
ture. Furthermore, the editorial
declared, there is a question as
to whether “the Jews have the
right to take the law in their
own hands.” •
Another Frankfurt newspaper,
the Rundschau, expressed aston
ishment over the Government’s
quick decision not to request
Eichmann’s . extradition Jo Ger
many. “Although nt> extradition
treaty exists between Bonn and
Israel,” the newspaper pointed
out, “ a special agreement could
surely be reached in this case.”
Die Welt, mass circulation
daily published by the Axel
Springer interests in Hamburg,
declared that “we Germans have
a right to judge those (like
Eichmann) who are responsible
for the misery they brought,
not only to Jews, but to us as
well.”
Die Zeit, in a front-page arti
cle, proposed that Eichmann be
tried by a tribunal formed under
the United Nations convention
outlawing genocide “because not
only the Jews in Israel, but also
those living in other countries
should be symbolically repre
sented.”
In the Deutsche Zeitung, Is
rael’s right to try Eichmann was
acknowledged, but the question
was raised whether Israel was
not risking “its fundamental de
pendence on international law
by satisfying the vengeful anger
of its people—no matter how
justified these emotions may
be ”
Der Spiegel which had de
clared that Israel was planning
a “show trial” for Eichmann as
a form of “blackmail” against
West Germany, in an effort to
bring pressure upon the West
German Government to continue
economic aid to Israel after the
Germa n-I s r a e 1 Reparations
Agreement expires within the
next few years, was answered
last week. An editorial in the
current issue of the Allgemeine
Wochenzeitung der Juden, offi
cial organ of the Jewish com
munity of Germany, protested
against Der Spiegel’s attitude
in this regard.
U IV Security Council Censures
Israel; Everybody Hates Nazis
By SAUL CARSON
JTA Staff Correspondent
UNITED NATIONS, (JTA) —
The Security Council approved
a face-saving formula last week
in the Argentina-Israel dispute
over the seizure of Adolf Eich
mann under which Argentina
gave up its demand that the
Security Council order Israel to
return the Nazi arch criminal.
The formula, worked out by
the United States, provided for
a mild censure of Israel for
seizing Eichmann in Buenos
Aires last month, acceptance of
Israel’s apology for violating
Argentine sovereignty and a-
strong suggestion that the two
countries proceed to work out
their (differences on the issue
directly.
The formula was embodied in
a resolution approved by a vote
of eight to nothing. Russia and
Poland abstained on the ground
that a vote for the resolution
might be interpreted as a vote
in favor of an order to Israel to
return Eichmann to Argentina.
Argentina, as a party to the dis
pute, disqualified itself from
voting. All of the countries
which voted for the resolution
made it clear that they were not
asking Israel to return Eich
mann.
The resolution declared that
the transfer of_ Eichmann “con
stitutes a violation of the sov
ereignty" of Argentina. ' The

PLAEPf TALK—by Alfred Segal
AH About Adolf Eichmaim
In our town there’s lots of talk
about Adolf Eichmann . . and I
myself have had telephone calls,
such as “Segal, aren’t you go
ing to write something about
that Eichmann . . and do you
really think it’ll do us Jewish
folks any good for the govern
ment of Israel to snatch a guy
out of another country . . to try
him in your and my name as
Jews?”
And another asks: “That man’s
crimes were done in Germany,
and really, what right has the
government of Israel to try him
in the name of all of us Jews . .
That’s the idea isn’t it? He was
taken out of a South American
country to be tried in Israel for
your sake and my sake, in the
name of all the Jew he’s sup
posed to have killed. After all,
we are Americans and most of
the other Jews of the world
don’t live in Israel, and why
should that Eichmann be
handled in Israel in your name
and mine as Jews? That’s the
idea, isn’t it?”
Still another . . he’s a distin
guished Jewish lawyer of our
town, and he’s saying: “All of
us American citlsens would
feel deeply indignant against our
own country If, without any law
or order, it had snatched some
grafting American politician
out pf the land of Israel to try
him for having stolen money
out of our City Hall. Yet what’s
been done to that Eichmann is
worse than that. He was grabbed
out of another country In the
name of all of us Jews, what
ever our nationality.”
And this one: “Is it good for
all of us Jews over the world
that such a thing has been done
by Israel in all our names . . as
I see it? Yes, this Eichmann was
practically kidnapped out of the
Argentine in the name of all of
Us Jews everywhere. If Eich-
tnaim is to suffer punishment it
ghould be handed him in the
country in which ho committed
his crimes, as is proper in our
civilization.”
And another telephone call:
“Really, Segal, is it for the good
of Jewish life all over the world
when the government of Israel
grabs a man, without legal per
mission, to try him for crimes
he is supposed to have com
mitted against Jews in some
other country than Israel? Is
that the way of civilized gov
ernments? Is it for Israel’s good?
Is it toward your good and mine
as-Jews?”
The telephone keeps ringing,
and here’s one telling me: "Seg
al, your column has a duty to
speak up for the good of Jews
in this matter of that guy Eich
mann. To try him and punish
him in Israel for crimes he com
mitted far from Israel . . to pun
ish him in Israel ... in the
names of Jews everywhere . . .
isn’t at all of any good to the
names of us Jews elsewhere in
the world. That isn’t the way of
civilization today.”
Sure enough, I hear other
opinions as well, such as this
one: “Segal, let’s be thankful
that there’s now a Jewish coun
try to punish those who hurt
Jews no matter where. Segal,
let’s sing to Israel.”
Well, I’m sorry. I can’t join in
the singing. I’m thinking of the
grandeur of Israel . . its high
striving to become a happy land
for Jews who have come out
of troubled countries to make
Israel the land of their own . .
its idealism which is of the so
cial righteousness of our pro
phets . . its hope to set an ex
ample of human goodness to all
the world.
As I see it such an example
is not being offered by Israel
when, without any legal pro
cess, It grabs g man oat of an
other country to try him for
crimes committed elsewhere. I
hum Goldmann (he’s president
of the World Jewish Congress)
said about all this lately: “I am
not in need of guidance from
anyone, including the Prime
Minister of Israel, in matters
concerning the feelings of the
Jewish people and the honor of
the State of Israel.”
Goldmann’s idea is that if
Eichmann is to be tried in Is
rael for his alleged crimes com-
mited in Germany, the judges
should not be only judges of
Israel. The Nazi crimes were
committed not only against Jews
but also against other peoples
the Nazis didn’t like, and for
that reason Goldmann suggests
that Eichmann’s judges include
also men out of other lands
whom the Nazis afflicted.
He says: “Because Eichmann
and the Nazis killed not only
Jews, it would be worthwhile to
invite those countries whose
citizens were victims to send
their judges.”
He means that judges of all
nations which suffered murder
by reason of the Nazis should
sit in judgment together over
Eichmann.
But Premier Ben-Gurion says:
"American Journalists, who have
not suffered from the Nasi atro
cities, may be ‘objective’ and
deny Israel’s right to try one of
the greatest of the Nasi murder
ers, but the calamity that the
Nazis Inflicted on the Jewish
people is a specific and un
paralleled act . . an act designed
for the utter extermination of
the entire Jewish people. It is
therefore the duty of the State
of Israel, the only sovereign
authority in Jewry . . to see that
the whole of this story is fully
exposed.”
Well,! I myself go along with
Nahum Goldmann . . . toward
worthy justice. I recall the trial
land told the Council that Is
rael’s apology constituted the
“appropriate reparation” which
Argentina had demanded and
that they considered the case as
“closed.”
Argentina itself, repeatedly
challenged to interpret its de
mand for “appropriate repara
tion,” declined to take -up the
challenge. Dr. Mario Amadeo,
Argentina’s delegation chairman,
was asked sharply for a “yes or
no” answer by Soviet delegation
chairman Arkady A. Sobolev in
regard to the demand he voiced
in the Council for Eichmann’s
return and punishment of those
guilty of abducting the Nazi
from Argentina. Dr. Amadeo
refused flatly to give such an
answer, declaring that each dele
gation is entitled to make its
own interpretation of what “ap
propriate reparation” might
mean. -
The entire two-day debate had
resulted in an extraordinary out
pouring of world opinion about
war criminals in general, Eich
mann in particular, and world
expresssion of horror over the
holocaust created by the Nazis
who killed 6,000,000 Jews dur
ing World War II.
Israel was particularly pleased
with that aspect of the debate.
Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel Foreign
Minister, told the JTA: “Israel
has the right to feel satisfied
with the results of the discus
sion.” She added, however: "Is
rael is anxious that her friend
ship with Argentina shall not be
impaised.” . r . .
Mrs. Meir presented Israel’s
case during the debate. She
quoted extensively from proto
cols of the Nuremberg trials and
from writings of former leading
Nazis to show that Eichmann
was not merely an ordinary
murderer but one obsessed with
effecting the “final solution” of
the Jewish problem through
the most atrocious mass murders
in history.
Those who captured Eichmann,
she said, “have taken a first
step in redressing a grave, his
toric injustice—Eichmann’s eva
sion of justice. Is this a problem
for the Security Council to deal
with? This is a body that deals
with threats to the peace. Is
this a threat to peace—Eichmann
brought to trial by the very
people to whose total physical
annihilation he dedicated all his
energies, even if the manner of
his apprenhension violated the
laws of the Argentine? Or did
the threat to peace lie in Eich
mann at large, Eichmann un
punished, Eichmann free to
spread the poison of his twisted
soul to a new generation?”
The theme of Nazi crimes and
those of Eichmann specifically
was then taken up by the three
speakers following Mrs. Meir:
Sobolev for the Soviet Union;
Henry Cabot Lodge for the
United States, and Sir Pierson
Dixon for Britain.
Mr. Sobolev called Eichmann
“a war criminal of the first
magnitude.” He accused the
Argentine Government of hav
ing violated international obli
gations by not having arrested
Eichmann and bringing him to
justice. He implied that the US
SR would prefer that Eichmann
be returned to one of the scenes
of his many crimes, -naming
among those locations, Ausch
witz, which is now in Poland.
Mr. Sobolev concluded by as
serting that his Government
“shares” Argentina’s concern
for violation of its sovereignty.
Mr. Lodge called attention to
the fact that the United Nations
War Crimes Commission had
identified Eichmann as a war
criminal. “In view of this all
too extensive background,” he
said, “we can well understand
the strong feelings of the Gov
ernment of Israel, many of
whose citizens are children, bro
thers, sisters and parents of
people murdered in Europe hard
ly more than 15 years ago. The
United States and its allies
fought World War II against
Nazism. We were against it
then, we are against it now.”
Student Newspaper Denounced
For Prank Appeal for Eichmann
MANCHESTER, N.H., (JTA)
—The Manchester Union this
past week denounced editorial
ly an apparent prank appeal in
the student newspaper of Keene
Teachers College for contribu
tions to save Adolf Eichmann,
the Nazi war criminal now
awaiting trial in Israel.
The Manchester newspaper
reproduced the editorial from
the Monadnock and said that
“if this is supposed to be hu
mor, it is in atrocious bad taste.
If it is a serious piece, it is com
pletely fantastic that a supposed
ly responsible publication of a
normal school, which is prepar
ing teachers, should allow such
an article to appear.”
“An explanation by the ad
ministration of Keene Teachers
College to the people of the state
of New Hampshire should be
forthcoming immediately,” the
editorial concluded.
The student newspaper edi
torial described Eichmann as a
“young member of the intellect
ual elite” who “soon proved to
be highly skilled at his task” of
exterminating all non-Aryans,
man would have finished
his job if he had been given
more time,” the student editorial
added that “unfortunately for
humanity, the uncleans seduced
the capitalists of the western
hemisphere, and they, although
intellectually inferior, were rich
enough to defeat the master
race. . .”
Until the "great day,” when
“we will resume our position as
master of the world,” the edi
torial added, "all intellectuals
can do their part by contribut
ing to the campaign to free our
great hero of World War n from
the clutches of the non-Aryans.”
Readers were advised to send
their contributions- to “Wilhelm
Schmidt, Chairman’ of the Com
mittee to save Adolf Eichmann,
Buenos Aires, Argentina.”
