A Difeat of Contemporary Opinion
Who Is Amadeo?
. . . Prior to the 1946 State Department disclosure of his colla
boration with the Nazi*, it had been known that Mario Amadeo
(who presented Argentina's case on Eichmann against Israel in
the Security Council) was connected with an extreme, nationalist
group that advocated a Kingdom of the River Plate, including
Uruguay. While an official of the political department of Argentina’s
Foreign Ministry in World War II, he prepared the anti-American
speeches delivered by the Foreign Minister. One of those ghostly
speeches, prepared for Foreign Minister Orlando Perlufo as a reply
to Secretary of Stgte Cordell Hull’s charges against Argentina, was
so vehement that it had to be toned down sharply before delivery.
In general, Amadeo distinguished himself during World War II with
a rabid anti-American record in addition to his Naziphile activities.
He was also one of the first Peronistas to break with Peron when,
in Amadeo’s view, Peron became too anti-Catholic and excessively
pro-labor.

Spreaders of racial and religious bigotry in the United States
are among the prime suppliers of propaganda to the Arabs in their
political and propagandistic war against Israel. One channel through
which this material flows is the Anti-Zionist League which has its
headquarters here in Cairo and branches in Beirut and Damascus.
A closer examination of the organization . . . revealed thie interesting
fact that much of its source material comes from the U.S. and
other countries of the free world. It is spread through the Arab
world by pamphlets and newspaper articles based on source ma
terial supplied by the League . . Among Dr. Mahmoud Saleh’s prime
source materials are publications such as “Common Sense,” which
calls itself “The Nation’s Anti-Communist Newspaper” and is pub
lished in Union City. N. J. Another is Gerald L. K. Smith’s “The
Flag and the Cross,” published in Los Angeles . . Reading through
Dr. Saleh’s samples, it becomes apparent that a sort of world-wide
cooperate and information exchange exists in the service of the
anti-Zionist cause. Dr. Saleh sends out information about the Pales
tine refugees, and gets back propaganda about the alleged Jewish
domination of the American Congress, business, crime, etc . .

Jewish Scientific Genius
One attribute of Dr. Herbert Friedman—and a fitting one for a
scientist dealing in the infinite mysteries of the universe and the
maulfunctioning complexities of rockets—is patience. For more than
three years, Dr. Friedman has been working toward using satellites
to study the ultra-violet and X-ray radiation generated by the sun.
His instruments were ready, but not the satellites. Twice in the
Spring of 1958 his payloads in the nose of a Vanguard satellite
launching rocket fell in the sea. Today, he finally succeeded in
piggyback fashion. The instrumented payload contained in the
scientific satellite placed into orbit with the Transit navigational
satellite was basically the same one Dr. Friedman and his team at
the Naval Research Laboratory started working on in 1956 for the
Vanguard satellites . . . Dr. Friedman was born in July, 1916, in
New York .City, the son of an art dealer and farmer. He attended
public school in Brooklyn . . In 1940, he married Gertrude Miller
. . . They reside in a brick rambler in suburban Arlington, Va.,
and have two sons, Paul, 16, and Jon, IS . .

Israel—Two Images
As a result of the image of Israel created by the fund-raisers,
it is not sufficiently known that Israel is “a going concern,” kept
going by the work and earnings of its citizens . . Israel is not the
perennial sbnorrer of the fundraisers’ projection! She is a hard
working, fantastically successful state who, if not for her huge
military budget on which her survival depends, could easily cover
the costa of all the services now financed by UJA and kindred funds.
In its first twelve years Israel has taken in almost one million new
immigrants, almost two newcomer* for every Israeli at the birth of
the State. During the same period approximately half a million
Puerto Ricans have come to New York City, which has a population
of over eight million. The vast majority of Israel’s new immigrants
are culturally and economically as under-privileged as are the
Puerto Ricans. To understand what Israel has achieved one must
visualiie what would have happened if, instead of half a million,
sixteen million Puerto Ricans had settled in New York since 1948.
Israel still needs “helpers" and the time is not yet when we, the
"helpers,” can relax our efforts. But let us realise that we are not
more t hnn “helpers" in that partnership of universal Jewish com
munity responsibility tor the land with which the spirit, the essence
and the full flowering of Jewish living are bound up.
WEISS-R08MARIN, The Jewish Spectator
STE, AGATHlTiDES MONTS,
Que., (JTA)— Rabbi Charles
Weinberg, newly-elected presi
dent of the Rabbinical /Council
of America, and Spiritual leader
of Congregation : Beth Israel,
Malden, Mass., declared this
week in his acceptance address
that “sectarian anq credal bodies
are making unfair and unjust
demands in many of our gov
ernmental and public institu
tions, in violation ; of the funda
mental American |d ea of separa
tion of church and state.”
“Religion and the state must
remain divorced from each other
and if they are to serve the
community with inaximum ef
fectiveness, ethical justice and
a minimum of tension,” he
stated. “The efforts to inject re
ligious beliefs in our public
schools, the retention of the
harsh and discriminatory Sunday
law inhibitions, the introduction
of religious considerations in de
termining fitness for public of
fice, and the utilization of zon
ing statutes to restrict the entry
o( houses of worship in many
areas, are some of the danger
signs which call for amelioration '
and reform in our thinking
about religion in communal ac
tivities.”
“It is a national travesty and
blemish to judge a political can
didate by his color, religion or
national origin,” the rabbinical
leader continued. “According to
the American criteria of fair
play, freedom and constitutional
liberty, an individual is to be
evaluated by his inner qualities,
personal merits and experiment
al characteristics. It is of im
perative importance that the
1928 debacle be prevented and
that candidates not be defeated
on narrowly sectarian, bigoted
and foolishly nonsensical
grounds.”
Rabbi Weinberg appealed to
the presidential aspirants and
candidates of both major parties
to “commit themselves fully and
unequivocally, in a public state
ment, to the preservation of Is
rael’s sovereign integrity, terri
torial inviolability, and the
maintenance of the existing
border areas. It is urgent for the
world peace that the Democrat
ic and Republican Party plat
forms include strong planks
guaranteeing the survival and
progress of Israel as a viable
nation.”
The executive vice-president
of the Rabbinical Council of
America, Rabbi Israel Klavan,
told the convention that “the
challenge of the past decade in
terms of the religious revival
has not been adequately met by
the rabbinic and educational
leaders” of American Orthodox
Judaism.
Warning that “we must not
look back upon these golden
years with any degree of com
placency, self-satisfaction and
narrow pride,” Rabbi Klavan de
clared that “we could have re
vitalized and rejuvenated the
entire structure of the Jewish
collectivity if we had been pre
pared to assume the burdens,
disciplines and challenges of
this action-packed ear.” He

Former SS General Traced,
Charged With Killing 340,000
BONN, (JTA)—Walter Drugb,
Chief Bonn Prosecutor, reported
Sunday that Wilhelm Koppe, a
former Nazi SS general, has
been identified as the former
director of Chelmno concentra
tion camp in Nazi-occupied Po
land, where,340,000 inmates were
murdered.
Koppe was living under an
assumed name with his family,
and working for a business firm
in Frankfurt, when he was ar
rested three months ago by
agents of West Germany’s war
crimes investigation department.
Prosecutor Drugh, disclosing
that Koppe’s true identity was
not confirmed until last week,
said the former general would
be charged with complicity in
the killing of the Chelmno camp
victims. The camp was located

MAINZ, (JTA) — Nasi songs
echoed last weekend in 'the

song by 10 youths, aged 18 to
23. They were arrested June 11
for celebrating “unity day” by
wearing SS-like uniforms and
singing Nasi songs.
BERLIN, (JTA) — At least
1,400 Berlin Jews were saved
from death during the war by
non-Jewish Germans, Senator
Joachim Lipschitz, a leading So
cial Democrat, revealed here
today.
Senator Lipschitz, himself a
half-Jew who, somehow, man
aged to live through the war to
return here as a war hero and
who lost an arm on the Eastern
front, made that statement in
introducing a bill in this City-
State Legislature to compensate
Germans who had saved Jews
and are now in need. The bill

category receive a grant of 1,000

van said that “the community

He warned that the years
ahead “are going to demand the
ability to face the issues and
tackle the problems which in
creasing opportunities will pre

Judaism must “quadruple the
number of institutions of Jewish
learning, study and higher edu

the quantity of publications and
journals which can serve the
intellectual needs and wants of
Jewish youth and the general
population.”
Denies Eichmann
Was Aided by
Vatican Passport
ROME, (JTA) — Osservatore
Romano, the Vatican organ, de
nounced as “slanderous inven
tions” reports that Adolf Elch-
mann’s flight to South America
in 1951 had been aided by
ecclesiastical circles in Italy.
The Vatican organ asserted
that “what we know is that this
individual (Eichmann) never re
ceived a Vatican passport, even
under a false name, because it
is not the habit of the Holy See
to issue such documents to those
not legally entitled to have
them.” \
Two of the principal radio net
works in West Germany have
been broadcasting accounts of
Eichmann’s crimes. Klaus Hap-
precht, a nationally prominent
radio commentator, took the at
titude that Eichmann’s prosecu
tion must be left to Israel. But
he reminded his listeners, in
providing details about the
crimes committed by Eichmann
and other leading Nazis, that
“we must know who these men
were and what they did.”
To Publish New
Edition of Koran
For Israeli Moslems
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Plans
for publication of an edition of
the Koran, the sacred book of
Islam, in Israel have been com
pleted by the Israel Ministry
for Religious Affairs.
The plan for such a publica
tion effort, the first printing of
the Koran in Israel, was initiated
after officials of Israel’s Mos
lem community of 175,000 com
plained about the quality of the
Korans imported from Turkey.
They contended that the Turk
ish editions were poorly printed
and had many errors.
The plan calls for publication
of the Koran by the Supreme
Moslem Committee of Israel
with the assistance of Moslem
religious courts.
