THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Correspondent’s Tour Delayed
By BERRY RITTENBAUM
Our Tour du Monde Staffer
I just wanted to give you a
few more highlights of my east
ern trip I almost met the King
of Nepal. I was staying at the
Oberel Palace Hotel in Sprinigar,
India, and the King’s suite was
just above my room. Although I
never saw him, I did see his
dogs.
V"Wfe EMnuttOu. e» evemnfC I
was sitting in the lobby of the
hotel playing my transitor radio.
Amongst a large group of people
who entered the hotel were two
Sudan Brigadier Generals. They
sat next to me and began asking
me about my radio and its costs
"in American dollars.” 1 told
them that I was a foreign cor
respondent of the “Southern Is
raelite,” a big Southern news
paper, and that I would like to
take a picture of them with my
Polaroid. They said yes, and 1
had to take four pictures so
everyone in the group could have
one. Damascus has little to offer
in the way of sights, and in two
hours I was able to see all the
high spots and do a little shop
ping.
When I finished my tour of the
city I joined the crowds of peo
ple who were on the streets to
Brig. Gen. Eugene Oberdorfer, Prti.

Sudan and the Vice-President of

hard to build good relations with
the Africans.
On my way to Jerusalem I gave
two Spanish students a ride. They
had been travelling 40 days at
the low total cost of $40, of which
$10 had been spent on visas. As
they were Catholics, they fre
quently spent the night at mona-
staries and convents. I had
thought that Convents were only
for nuns, but this is not so, as
some Monks also live in Con

The trip from Damascus to Am
man and Jerusalem was rather
uneventful. We had to wait from
11 a m. to 2:30 p.m. for King
Hussein to pass as the Army had
stopped all traffic on the main
road to Amman Some people had
been waiting since 8 am. It is
really rough waiting out in the
desert with the sun bearing down
and no place to get anything to
eat or drink. You can imagine
how much consideration the King
has for his people when he does
such as this. Wc finally gave up
waiting for him to pass and took
a longer route to Amman. Today
I read in the Jerusalem Times
that the King didn’t even go on
his trip until the next day.
Amman is the capital of Jordan
with a population of 150,000. It
has no clear color and is not very
interesting. From Amman to
Jerusalem the road winds
through barren desert mountains;
for miles there- is no habitation
—where there is no water there
is no life. There are many Bedo
uins along the way living in tents
with their sheep, goats and cam
els. My guide told me that the
government does not want them
photographed as it would reflect
on the poverty of Jordan. We
went through Jehrico, but there
is nothing left of Biblical interest
to see. We also stopped for a few
minutes at the Dead Sea. From
here the road winds upward
through the barren desert moun
tains to Jerusalem. The Jeru
salem approach through Israel,
in contrast, is a beautiful lined
highway.
I stayed at the American Col
ony Hotel in Jerusalem. The
buildings are old and the food
mediocre, but it is the best they
have. The mattress feels as though
it was stuffed with rocks, while
the water was stored in an earth
en jar covered with a cloth to
keep the bugs out of it. All of
the sight-seeing in the old part
of the city is concerned with
Biblical history. The Wailing
Wall is just a big stone wall, and
without praying is just another
wall. The Hadassah Hospital and
the Hebrew University are not
being used, and one cannot get
close to them, although I took
someDicJurescd? both. They are
said to me that if I wanted him
to arrange it he gould for a total
of $12. I hired a car myself for
$7 and paid another dollar at Mt.
(Jiive and at Bethlehem ft>r
guides. I don’t ever book tours
ahead if I can help it, but some
times I must do it I usually find
that I can arrange it myself for
about half the cost. As a world
traveler I wanted to see the Arab
countries, but now that I have, I
have no desire to go back. How
ever, when I leave here I will
be looking forward to coming
back to Israel. It will be my
tepth trip. I am prouder of this
country every time I return.

guides in the Arab countries try
at every opportunity to lead you
to some stores to shop so they
can get their commission. One
guide in Jerusalem took me to a
barber shop in the middle of a
tour and asked me if I didn’t
want to get a hair cut as my hair
was too long. I told him that I
would get # haircut when I
thought I needed it, and for him
not to worry about it.
My tours in the Arab countries
were arranged for and paid in
advance. However, the one to
Bethlehem was not. The travel
bureau in Jerusalem said that
their price was $15, and that if
I wanted to go to Mt, Olive it
would be extra. Later my guide
