A MOTHER IN ISRAEL-By Anita Eh*le
Hadassah Medical Centre lour Thrilling
No matter how brilliantly the
new Hadaaaah Medical Center in
Jerusalem will function, it can
never be as thrilling and per
sonal to me again as it was dur
ing the blazing hot day a few
weeks ago when 1 was taken on
a pre-dedication tour together

ad the feeling that this was
Jenesis. 1 was in at the creation.
The building, which looks so
passive from the outside, is as
(jht and airborne as a cathe-
al inside. No matter where you
t. you never feel that you are
Hosed in a hospital. Because
of the construction of the win
dows and the lay-out of the
s, you have only an aware-
of the hills. A feeling of
in the center, in the em-
of those marvellous, time-
ills; the hills among which
John the Baptist grew up, and
which! have cast their mystic
spell ok priests and prophets for
countless generations.
Thera is something magnetic
about (hose hills. Wherever I
turned 1 was drawn into them,

of the doctors went, if not un
heard, unheeded.
Outside, in the patio-Mke
courtyard, paved with pifik-
vined stone salvaged from the
bombing of Jerusalem, I began
to listen again. We were stand
ing before the square stone struc
ture, partially underground,
which is to be the synagogue.

like chapel, which provides such
an endearing contrast to the
giant, stream-lined, ultra-modern
Medical Center of which it is a
part.
While present-day Israeli ar
chitects look to the four comers
of the earth, or draw on their
imagination to produce the chara
cterless structures which they
think are modem, Dr. Neufeld
found his inspiration in the anci
ent synagogues of the Old City of
Jerusalem, which were destroy
ed in our War of Independence.
They too, were partially under
ground, perpetually half-lit and
clothed in mystery.
The crowning glory of the
synagogue at the Medical Center
will be 12 feet tall, stained glas3
windows forming a “kippah”
above ground. These have been
designed by Chagall, on the
theme of the 12 tribes, which Dr.
Neufeld set for him. Although
the designs are being kept se
cret from the general public un
til the synagogue and center are
opened next year, leading au
thorities in France have already
acclaimed the panels the crown
ing achievement of Chagall's
career.
The windows are being made
in Reipis by a firm which has
been making stained glass win
dows for 14 generations. It was
just by chance that I learned
that two representatives of the
firm of Atelier Simon, were in
the Medical Center at that very
moment,. They had brought seg-
ment^M^e already famous win-
dows/Ta^kt the intensity of the
light, affected the
colors. ’ T'_ . * .,,

Reopen With
500,000 Pupils
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—A half-
million pupils returned to school
in Israel last week at the end
of the summer vacations and
some 50,000 entered school for
the first time.
Substantial gains were re
corded in the battle of school
official against overcrowding.
The new school term opened
with 450 “second shift” classes
which are held in the afternoon
for lack of classroom space.
There were 577 such classes last
year and 789 in 1958. The pro
gressive decrease was achieved
despite population increases from
natural growth and from immi
gration.
The current high school en
rollment was reported at 73,000
compared with 61,000 in the
previous year. Attendance at
Arab schools also was increased,
with 35,000 Arab children in
elementary schools and 5,000 in
state kindergartens. Vocational,
agricultural and handicraft
classes were marked by an 18
percent increase over 1959.
to meet the two young artists
from France. We moved Kafka-
like about the vast, deaerted
floors, asking anyone we met if
they had seen the “Tzarfatim."
We found them at the top of the
building They are husband and
wife. Brigitte and Charles Mar
que. She is a daughter of the
Simon family. Extremely tall and
thin, with a page-boy haircut
framing wide, slanting eyes in a
clear-cut mahogany-tinted face,
Brigitte looked astonishingly like
a wooden figure from a medieval
church. Her husband was slight,
blve-cred aod Imwm
known painter in his own right.
They were standing looking at
four brilliantly-colored panes of
figured glass leaning against the
windows. The reflection of the
light through the panels spangled
the floor with jewels. Although
I am not permitted to describe
the designs, I don’t think I am
infringing on any copyright by
stating that the Chagall purples
and greens, blues and yellows
have never looked more rich and
more vibrant.
These are not the final colors,
however. The light in Israel is
so much stronger than in France,
all the colors will have to be
deepened to produce the intend
ed effect.
