ON THE INTERNATION
AI, SCENE we are observing
new entjrnglei.ngats as a result
of the hew strategies employ
ed in the cold war The dra
matic play on the diplomatic
chess hoard is steadily ap
proaching its climax, while
every human being on the
face of the earth is anxiously
looking on the horizon and
wondering what will emerge,
where will the present inter
national tensions lead to? Will
mankind become engulfed in
a sea of fire which will obli
terate our civilization, or will
yet emerge out of the “mush
room clouds” rays of hope
that will lead to the moral
regeneration of humanity.
WE JEWS, the historic vic
tims of international tension
and hostility, are especially
wary of this dangerous game,
and wo naturally wonder
what is m store for Israel
and World Jewry. It took
many centuries of bitter
struggle for the Jewish peo
ple to acquire equal human
rights. But have the Jews the
world over also attained equal
rights to live AS JEWS 9
Thus, a cardinal question with
which we might begin the
New Year is, when will the
three million of our isolated
brethren behind the iron cur
tain be allowed to breathe
freely as Jews, through the
restoration of Jewish cultural
rights and religious freedom
equal to those enjoyed by
other nationalities in Russia
AS FOR ISRAEL, which
was placed by Providence on
the crossroads of continents,
how will she now fare with
the cold war at its crossroads?
Will she be exposed to the

stormy currents of interna
tional power politics and
Arab hostility, or will she, as
a result of decreased tensions
and suspicion be able t6 ful

herself and humanity?
FINALLY, WHAT IS the
outlook for American Jewry?
Destiny has willed it that in
the age old struggle for Jew
ish survival and creativity,
American Jewry became the
twentieth century “avant
guarde” of world Jewry. Un
doubtedly, American Jewry’s
generous outpouring of ma
terial aid toward the rescue
of our brethren overseas, is
unprecedented in the history
of any people; a mission inci
dentally not yet completed
In the realm of Jewish cul
ture and spirituality too, the
signs are encouraging. There
is a marked return among
Jews of the so-called “lost
generation” toward the source
of positive Jewish living. The
survey made by the “Council
trf Jewish Federations and
Welfare Funds” shows that
parents are now anxious to
provide their children with
a more adequate Jewish edu
cation. There is also a genu
ine interest among many
hitherto “marginal Jews” to
be actively identified with
Jews, Judaism and Jewish
continuty. However, even
with all those remakable
accomplishments at hand,
can we afford to ignore
the centrifugal forces that
are still rampant in our
midst such as ignorance,
apathy, inertia and assimi
lation factors that constitute
a serious threat to the
survival of the Jewish peo
ple in the Diaspora. Are we
then equipped with enough
faith, moral fiber and intel
lectual stamina to face up to
our historic responsibilities
that Providence has put upon
our shoulders?
THESE ARE QUESTIONS
of great magnitude and such
a critical analysis is the sig
nificant ingredient of our
Jewish New Year. Of bourse,
it is not given to human
beings to penetrate the veil
of the future. But as our sages
have taught: “Hakol Tzofooye
