Leon Goldberg, regional JWB-ASD coordinator, and USO area
director, presenting Lt. General Herbert B. Powell, Commanding,
Third US. Army, with a 1960-61 (5721) JWB Jewish Calendar pre
pared for distribution to members of the Armed Forces. With them
is Chaplain Col. Harold H. Schulz, Third U. S. Army chaplain. The
trio discussed arrangements for observance of the High Holy Days
by Third Aimy personnel, at which time Lt.-Gen. Powell issued the
following statement:
It is with great pride that I extend to all men and women of
the Jewish faith assigned to the Third United States Army my sin
cere best wishes for the coming High Holy Days.
The important festivals of Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur
will this year, as they have in the past, be observed with full
solemnity and a complete awareness of their significance at all
Third United States Army installations. Commanders and Chaplains
are sparing no effort to ensure that all those who wish to partici
pate in religious services daring these all-important days will have
every opportunity to do so. I hope that many of yon will find it
possible to attend your own synagogues or temples in the company
of your loved ones.
I ask each of you to join with me in praying that the New
Year will usher in a time of peace and good will that will help to
bring us closer to that final goal of universal love and brotherhood
that we all so earnestly desire.
To all of yon I extend my personal wish for every success and
happiness for this and all the New Years to come.

Atlanta Mohel
Performs Briss
Rites for Son
Who performs the Briss when
the mohel has a son?
In the case of Rev. Philip
Rosenblatt of Atlanta, the cere
mony was performed by the mo
hel himself on September 7.
“It’s a Mitzvah for the father
to perform this rite,” he said,
calling attention to the impera
tive which summoned the Jew
ish Patriarch Abraham himself
to institute the practice.
There was, undoubtedly, no
mohel around then anyways.
Fortunately for generations of
nervous fathers through the
ages, this situation did not later
exist and the custom is general
ly delegated.
Gary Samuel, born August 31,
is the second son for Rev. and
Mrs. Rosenblatt. He conducted
the ceremony the first time as
two
well. The couple have
daughters.
Rev. Rosenblatt serves as
cantor and teacher for Congre
gation Beth Jacob in Atlanta.
Rev. J. M. Werbin, who served
Atlantans and Georgians as a
mohel for several decades, was
guest of honor at the Rosenblatt
Briss. Dr. Regina Gabler Green
berg was the godmother, Joseph
Shuchatowitz the godfather.
The baby wasr born August 31.
