South Africa Jewry
Sidesteps Political
Controversies
JOHANNESBURG (JTA)
The current political controver
sies in the Union of South Africa,
many of them connected with
the government’s policy of apart
heid, have no “Jewish angle,”
the executive committee of the
South African Jewish Board of
Deputies reported at the Board's
biennial congees? which opened
here last Week.'
The Jewish community on the
whole, stated the report, has
taken no collective attitude on
politically controversial^ issues,
“Jews exercising their civic
rights as individual citizens, ac
cording to their personal opin
ions.”
One controversial issue on
which the committee has taken a
stand concerns the educational
field. Recently, the so-called
“conscience clause” has been eli
minated from application to the
new university for non-whites.
The clause protects the religious
freedom of teachers and students
in schools and universities.
According to the committee,
elimination of this clause “must
occasion concern, because reli
gious freedom is indivisible.”
On the other hand, the commit
tee notes, the government has
assured the Jewish community
that this modification of the
“consqience clause” will not in
volve a threat of discrimination
against Jews.
Black-Shirted
‘Fascists’ Assaulted
ROME, (JTA)—A number of
Italian “fascists,” wearing au
thentic Mussolin i-type black
shirts, were beaten up'this week
by some Jewish youths in the
Portico Dottavia, center of the
Rome Jewish quarter. It turned
out, however, that the men at
tacked were “extras” being used
by an Italian film producer
shooting a new picture, “Joy of
Living.” intended to reproduce
the racial persecutions that took
place in this very section of the
city under the fascist regime.
When Jews saw the black-
shirted men strutting around
the neighborhood, excitement
spread through the quarter.
Some Jewish youths did not
wait to investigate—they started
beating qp the extras.
