JWV’s Gershovitz
Dies at 53
NEW YORK—Samuel D. Ger-
shovitz, executive vice-president
of the National Jewish Welfare
Board (JWB), died on Sept. 5 in
New Rochelle, N. Y., after a brief
illnes. He was 53 years old.
Mr. Gershovitz was appointed
professional head of JWB in
*947. Prior to this he had served
as executive director of the
Jewush Community Centers of
Chicago. During a life-time career
of Center work he had also been
director of Jewish Community
Centers in Lawrence, Mass.,
Brooklyn, N Y, and Toronto,
Canada.
In 1939, Mr. Gershovitz was
named field secretary of the JWB
Midwest Section. In this capacity
he helped mobilize the Jewish
community behind the JWB re
ligious and morale program for
Jewish men in the expanding
U.S. Armed Forces. When the
United Service Organizations
(USO) was formed, with JWB as
one of (he founding members,
Mr. Gershovitz’ duties included
the establishment of USO morale
and welfare programs in various
midwest communities. He be
came associate director of JWB’s
Jewish Community Center Divi
sion in 1942.
A native of New York City, Mr.
Gershovitz was educated at the
University of Minnesota and the
Minneapolis Talmud Torah. He
entered the Jewish Community
Center camping field in 1929, on
his graduation from the Univer
sity of Minnesota and held vari
ous posts in the Center field.
Mr. Gershovitz was a member
of the Board of Overseers of the
Florence Heller Graduate School
for Advanced Studies in Social
Welfare, Brandeis University; a
member of the executive com
mittee of the World Federation
of YMHAs and Jewish Com
munity Centers, and was active
in the development of the Jeru
salem YMHA; national consult
ant to the White House Confer
ence on Aging and a member of
the Youth Committee of Presi
dent Eisenhower’s People-to-Peo-
ple Program. He was a member-
at-large of the National Council
of the Boy Scouts of America
and a member of the Jewish
Committee on Scouting of the
Boy Scouts of America; a mem
ber of the Advisory Committee
of the President’s Council on
Fitness for Youth; member of
the executive council of the
American Jewish Historical Soc
iety; member of the executive
committees of the Jewish Book
Council of America and Na
tional Jewish Music Council.
Surviving are his widow, Mar
cia, a son, Jonathan David; tvyo
daughters, Amy and Mrs. Lucy
Wright; his mother and five
sisters.

For 10-Week Course
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — A ten-
week course in techniques of co
operative living opened here last
week with farmers from ten
former French and Belgian col
onies in Africa as the students.
The course, sponsored by the
Israel Foreign Ministry and the
Histadrut, Israel’s General Fed
eration of Labor, is part of a
program of technical, economic
and cultural assistance organ
ized for newly emancipated
countries in Africa and Asia. Is

Senator Sparkman
Visits Israel
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Senator
Jon. J. Sparkman, Alabama
Democrat now on a Middle East
visit, told the press here last
week he felt certain that the
Senate Foreign Affairs Commit
tee would back any measure
which would help to bring Mid
dle East peace.
The Senator met with Prime
Minister David Ben-Gurion and
Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Fore
ign Minister, during his visit. He
was scheduled to visit Jordan
next.

TO ALL MY FRIENDS:
I regret that 1 have been unable to see
each one of you in person and bid you good
bye before my departure for Israel. To
those 1 missed, you know that it was not
because you meant less to me, simply and
truthfully, time was against me, and 1 just
couldn’t make it. This therefore is my good
bye to each and everyone of you.

of my whereabouts an<j experiences that
might be of interest to you by writing of
it in this paper.
