were expressed twenty-one years
ago, when the Hadassah Hospital
and Nurses School on Mt. Scopus
w,as uiaugurated. While listening
to lofty speeches, the crowd of
notables, visitors and medical
staff looked down on the ever
fascinating view of the Eternal
City, lying at their feet. A view,
that inspired in you the feeling
of having conquored the world,
of giving assurance and histori
cal frame to the work of pro
gress.
But history willed differently
After a promising start, a cruel
war stopped the fruitful work,
and even now, after 12 years of
uneasy peace, the grand struc
tures on Mt. Scopus lie idle and
still. They remain hollow shells
of a hope, never given up, to
make a fresh start some day;
when short-sighted politics will
allow the place to fulfill its
promise of helping and healing
the sick of all creeds, who come
knocking at the door.
Work has never stopped, in
spite of the tragic loss of the
beautiful hospital. The sick still
get sick and want to get well,
babies are born every minute,
and so work went on at ^ver
growing pace, along with the
general growth of population
and its demand. The silent and
hardworking heroes, doctors,
nurses and medical staff of the
Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem,
never faltered. They made the
best out of horribly cramped and
primitive conditions, housed in
inadequate buildings, dispersed
all over the city. They were hop
ing for a miracle that would
enable them to give the more
than best again.
There is a saying; God helps
those that help themselves,
which proved itself. The mir
acle came to pass. Not suddenly,
it took nine long years of care
ful planning and diligent fund
raising on behalf of America's
Hadassah Organization to make
it come true. It took the never
relenting zeal of active Hadas
sah members to realize the
dream of a new, central Hos
pital on a grand scale fpr poor,
ravaged Jerusalem.

Culmination of all those years
of planning and hoping came at
last. The dedication of the new
Hadassah Medical Center and
University School of Medicine
took place last week in the Jeru
salem hills.
The way out was well marked
by colored signs, and guided by
the modern equipped police-
force at every doubtful corner,
you could not fail getting to
your destination safely. On our
route we see the ancient hills and
valleys awakening anew. Young
tree saplings are sprouting a
delicate green, and cover the
naked majesty of this eroded up
hill area around a curve of the
road, the huge edifice suddenly
comes into view. In spite of its
enormous size, it seems to be
"estling into the contours of the
region, fitting itself into the
panorama, its delicate blending
of colors changing and adapting
within the natural light. A hap
py harmony of God’s and Man’s
craftmanship. a breathtaking
sight.
We drive around the building
and come to the large plaza in
back, which is beautifully laid
out. There is enough room for
all the many invited guests, visi
tors from abroad on chairs, local
mortals on benches. To our re
gret do we have to turn our
backs to the gorgeous panorama
view, but face the runway and
the three main buildings beyond
Decorations are gay, the Israeli
and American flags fluttering
side by side, and the merry
colors of all the N. American
States plus District of Columbia
and Puerto Rico, all these flags
representing the gift of each re
spective Governor of his state.
While we look around, the Jeru
salem Police band is playing
lustily, and then, two alternat
ing voices come over the micro
phone with a lovely quotation
from the Bible, relating to the
loftiness of the high places
bound to the high purpose of the
institution. A Jerusalem Youth-
band, clad in dark blue and
white steps out and plays a song,
later forms an honor guard for
the president.
The most honored guests ar
rive. Aba Ebart, who draws an
enormous ovation—the Ameri
can Ambassador and Mrs. Reid,
after whose arrival the Star
Spangled Banner is being play
ed; later Mr. and Mrs. Ben
Gurion drive up, last the Presi
dent and Mrs. Ben Zvi, the Hat-
ikva sounds off and the cere
mony can begin.
There are about a dozen
speeches, more or less express
ing the thought common to all
participants, a good feeling of
achievement and the promise of
a fruitful future. The three walls
of commemoration are dedicated,
another impressive ceremony .s
the laying of the foundation
Stone to the hospital’s chapel and
a special dedication of a bell,

Among others, the American
Ambassador, who bravely de
livers part of his speech in slow
but correct Hebrew, including
another fine quotation from the
Bible, the only mishap comes
when he hesitates over one word,
“moderni” actually not a He
brew word at all, any way his
efforts are well appreciated and
he draws a well deserved long
applause from the audience as
well as later on from Ben Gurion
himself.
Although the afternoon is long,
the bench is hard to sit on, we
have forgotten all the smallness
of everyday, live only for this
moment of history, the highlight
of years, of dedicated labors.
And finally the sun sets over
the hills in a blazing fire, paints
with pastel shades the surround
ing mountains and our plateau,
as if Nature brings us her fit
ting climax, and points out the
way from the sunset of a beau
tiful, finished chapter towards
the rising sun of the new day,
the task of tomorrow.
