What Rosh Hashonah Means to Me
Hy JEREMIAH KELLY
St. Saviour's Parish, Brooklyn
I'm a fine one to be writing
about Rosh Hashonah—me, with
tiie name Kelly and a pretty
wife straight from the Old Sod.
But before you laugh, let me
tell you why this wonderful sea
son of the Jewish New Year
now means as much—well, al
most as much to me as St
Patrick’s Day
It’s simple: I’m a patient at
National Jewish Hospital at
Denver.
You still don’t understand’
Well, let me start from the be
ginning
Only six months ago — just
about March 17—I was a pretty
satisfied man I had a wonder
ful wife, Catherine, a native of
Tipperary I was working hard
at my auditing job with a na
tional insuror and enjoying the
challenge And, together, we
were expecting our first child
in a couple months These ele
ments would have made any
young family happy, but we
had an added joy.
Catherine’s 11-year-eld broth
er, Edmund, the youngest in her
family of nine, had recently
come from Ireland to live with
us. The freckle-faced, sandy-
haired lad took to me like a son,
and we treated him like one.
We were one happy family for
the next couple of months. On
May 31, Catherine gave birth to
a boy at Methodist Hospital in
Brooklyn. All went surprisingly
well—and we even had a name
picked out: Jeremiah J. Kelly,
III
But our joy didn’t last long.
That very same day, doctors
told me I had tuberculosis.
Edmund was immediately
rushed to the clinic, where x-
rays showed he had the disease,
too.
We were stunned Here, just
getting off the ground, our
world crashed in tragedy. Our
future was ending the day it
began
But by the grace of God, we
heard about National Jewish
Hospital. A nurse told us how
this amazing place offers free
care to the tuberculous under
its motto: “None may enter who
can pay . none can pay who
enter," and how it admits all re
gardless of faith, race, or place
of origin.
It sounded almost too good to
be true, but we made application,
mostly out of desperation.
Well, Edmund and I have been
here for some weeks now, and
I can see that the nurse actually
understated the case. We’re get
ting well with the most modern
care available at any price, but
we won’t have to pay a cent
And it’s owing to the generosity
of thousands from all over the
country, Jewish, Catholic, and
Protestant, who support the hos
pital through voluntary gifts.
Rosh Hashonah is a time when
Jews everywhere re-dedicate
themselves to the ancient ideals
of brotherhood and philanthro
py What better example of
these qualities in action can be
found than National Jewish
Hospital’
And there’s no better time
than now for me, a recipient of
this good will, to make my
gratitude known
To all, Jew and non-Jew
alike, who support this hospital,
I send the traditional greeting of
this season: “May you be in
scribed in the Book of Life for
a healthy and prosperous New
Year!”
