Beloved Memphis
Cantor Dies
MEMPHIS—Cantor Morris I.
Levin, who was appointed in
1955 by Baron Hirsch Congrega
tion as cantor emeritus, died
here October 4
Baron Hirsch’s Rabbis, Isadore
Goodman, David Skopp, and Jo
seph Renov, who officiated at
services held Wednesday, served
as pallbearers. Rabbis Nathan
Greenblatt and Seymour Kut-
ner along with the Reverends
E. I. Segal, Joseph Martin and
L. Shore also served %s pall
bearers. Officers and members of
the board of the synagogue
served as honorary pallbearers.
Burial was in Baron Hirsch
Cemetery.
Serving the synagogue for the
past 32 years, Cantor Levin’s
colorful personality was known
throughout Memphis by young
and old alike. Hundreds of Mem
phians, from all of the congre
gations knew him as the cheer
ful and humorous gentleman
who visited them in the hospitals
and brought sincere wishes for
their recovery. They knew him
as the gentle and understanding
man who gave them strength
and consolation in their hours of
sorrow.
Bom in Russia 75 years ago,
he emigrated to Canada at 19.
Three years later he moved
again, this time to New Orleans.
He moved three more times be
fore coming to Memphis, where
he was soon to be known as the
man with the sweet tenor voice
at religious services and at wed
dings held at Baron Hirsch
Synagogue.
Most of all, Memphis Jewry
will remember him for his un
excelled work with the children
of the Memphis Talmud Torah,
in particular the boys he pre
pared for Bar Mitzvah.
He leaves his wife, the former
Miss May Cohen of New Orleans;
a daughter, Miss Frieda Levin
and a son Clemence Levin.
Mrs. Anna Goodman
Mrs. Anna Goodman, 89, of
Long Island, N. Y., died Oct. 4.
Graveside services were held
Oct. 6 in Mt. Ararat Cemetery,
Farmingdale, L. I., N. Y.
Mrs. Goodman was the moth
er of Mrs. Robert Enteen of At
lanta, with whom she lived for
a number of years before re
turning to New York five years
ago. Her husband, Max Good
man, died a number of years
ago.
Others surviving are two sons,
Arlie H. Godde and Joseph Good
man, and another daughter,
Mrs. May Frankel, all of New
York.

Kessler Unveiling
Friends and relatives are in

ceremonies in memory of Max
N. Kesler, Sunday, Oct. 16, at
3 p.m., at Greenwood Cemetery.

ceremonies in memory of Mrs.
Ida Lewit, on Sunday, Oct. 16,
at 2:30 p.m., at Greenwood
Cemetery. Rabbi Harry Epstein
will officiate.
Mrs. M. J. Feiler
SAVANNAH —Mrs. M. J.
Feiler, 78, died Sept. 27 at
Starkeville, Miss, after a short
illness. She was visiting her
daughter, Mrs. Henry F. Meyer.
Funeral services were held Sept.
28 at Sipple’s Mortuary. Rabbi
S. E. Starrles officiated. Inter
ment was in Bonaventure Ceme
tery.
Other survivors are a son,
Edwin J. Feiler Sr.; four grand
children and two nieces.
Philip Haskell
Philip Haskell, 74, of Atlanta,
died Oct. 3. Funeral services
were held Oct. 5 in Blanchard’s
Chapel. Rabbi Harry H. Epstein
and Rabbi Jaocb Rothschild
officiated. Interment was in
Crest Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Haskell, a retired tailor
and head of Haskell Tailors, was
born in Poland. He came to the
United States in 1900, at which
time he went to Columbus to
live. He moved to Atlanta in
1938.
Surviving are his wife, the
former Thebe Gereon; two
daughters, Mrs. Max Myers,
Harrisburg, Pa., and Mrs. A.
Ervin Goldberg, Atlanta, and a
son, Col. H. G. Haskell, Honolu
lu, Hawaii, U. S. Army.
Joseph Reed
SAVANNAH — Joseph Reed,
72, died Sept. 27. Funeral serv
ices were held Sept. 28 at Sip
ple’s Mortuary. Rabbi A. I.
Rosenberg officiated. Interment
was in Bonaventure cemetery.
Mr. Reed was a native of Rui-
sia and a former merchant at
Cochran for 35 years.
Surviving are his wife, Belle
Levy Reed, Savannah; two sons,
Harold S. Reed and Irvin Reed;
one daughter, Mrs. Emanuel F.
Rosen, all of Savannah; three
sisters, Mrs. Elsie Routbard, Mrs.
Sara Palmer, both of Kingston,
Ontario, and Mrs. Lottie Fertik
of Brooklyn, N. Y.; eight grand
children.
Mrs. Anna Osias
Mrs. Anna Osias, 82, died Oct.
7. Funeral services were held
Oct. 9, at Blanchard’s Chapel.
Rabbi Harry H. Epstein offici
ated. Interment was in Green
wood Cemetery.
Born in Rumania, Mrs. Osias,
the former Anna Hirsch, had
been an Atlanta resident 15
years. She was the widow of
William Osias, who died in 1956.
Surviving are four daughters,
Mrs. Harry Matte), Atlanta; Mrs.
Edward Lewis, Larchmont, N.Y.;
Mrs. George Buchholtz and Mrs.
J. Waldman, both of New Ro
chelle, N. Y.; two sons, Irving
Osais, Bronx, N. Y.; and Jack
Osias, Los Angeles; and a sis
ter, Mrs. Fanny Zukerman, New
Rochelle.
Mrs. I. Shessel
DALLAS — Mrs. I. (KaUe
Weinstein) Shessel of Dallas
died here Oct. 2, Funeral serv
ices and interment were held
Ocf. 5 in Dallas.
Mrs. Shessel formerly lived in
Birmingham, and was a frequent
visitor to Atlanta.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Herb
ert L. Shessel of Atlanta; daugh
ters, Mrs. Chas. Kupfer and two
sisters, Mrs. M. Leiman and
Mrs. Louis Fine, all of Dallas.

officers and reports from con
vention delegates were high
lights of the September 28 sup
per meeting of the Augusta
Zionist District in the Adas
Yeshuron Education Building
Installed by Rabbi Chaim
Seiger were Harry Wilensky,
president: Hyman Goldberg, vice
president; Louis M. Kaynard,
treasurer, Charles Silbert, secre
tary.
Robert M Perskey reported
on the recent ZOA Convention
in New York City at which the
principal speaker was Senator
John F. Kennedy. Harry Wilen
sky and Louis M. Kaynard re
ported on the Regional Zionist
Convention at Hendersonville,
and Miss Evelyn Berger gave
a talk on her trip to Israel and
Europe during this past summer.

Myer Blumberg, local chair
man of the Dothan United Jew
ish Appeal, has called a meet
ing in the Temple Social Hall on
Sunday, Oct. 16. Members of the
Dothan Jewish community and
surrounding areas are expected
for the dinner and program.

Miss Helen Blumberg, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Blumberg, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Blumberg, was fea
tured in the Dothan Eagle as a
campus fashion model.
Miss Maureen Cohen will be
a contestant in the Miss Dothan
Contest.

Mrs. Coffsky is the former

tives and friends in New York
City and Washington, D. C.

last month in Augusta for the
purpose of greeting Marvin Rel-
kin, new Executive Director of
the Augusta Center and to meet
with the Center’s Board of Direc
tors.
