Germany to Make
Reparations to
Ret plum Victims
BONN. (JTA) A treaty for
indemnification of victims of
the Nazi occupation of Belgium
was signed here by representa
tives of the Brussels Govern
ment and West Germany. Ac
cording to the provisions of
the agreement, the Bonn Gov
ernment will pay 80,000,000
deutschemarks ($19,200,000 )
compensation ,to persons perse
cuted by the Nazis for religious,
racial or political reasons.

London Elects
Orthodox Jew
Lord Mayor
LONDON, (JTA) —British
Jewry was proud last week of
the election on the eve of Yom
Kippur of the 46-year-old Sir
Bernard Waley-Cohen as Lord
Mayor of the City of London
Sir Bernard is vice-president of
the United Synagogue, the cen
tral body of 69 Orthodox congre
gations with an aggregate mem
bership of more than 36,500
families He is also one of the
leaders of the Jewish Board of
Guardians, and is active in other
Jewish organizations.
Sir Bernard, who is one of the
youngest men ever to be elected
to the post of Lord Mayor by
London’s Board of Alderman,
will be sworn in officially at
ceremonies scheduled to be held
November 11th He has been
alderman since 1949, and has
also served as Sheriff of Lon
don, as one of the Queen’s lieu
tenants for the City of London,
and as a member of the London
Council He will hold the office
of Lord Mayor for a year.
Archaelotfists Find
Ancient Citadel
Of Judean King
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—A fort
ress used by the kings of Judah
in the Eighth Century B.C.E.,
has been unearthed on a hill at
Ramat Rachel, an Israeli settle
ment near the Jordanian border
south of here, it was announced
Monday by Dr. Yohanan Aha-
roni of the Government’s De
partment of Antiquities, who di
rected the excavations during
the summer. The citadel is be
lieved to have been the residence
of King Uzziah.
The site was discovered last
year, but identification of the
ruins as a citadel of the kings of
the Judean monarchy was made
only recently, according to Dr.
Aharoni. This was shown, he
said, by analysis of pottery and
other artifacts found at thfe site.

Yom Kippur Eve Game

Scheduling of the opening foot-
hall game of the University of
Miami on Yom Kippur eve was
criticized last week by the Jew
ish Floridian
The weekly said that it was
understandable that the Jewish
community ‘‘which contributes a
significant number of students
to the University and many of
whose leaders stand high in the
ranks of the university’s citizens
committee and board,” should
be concerned about the conflict
of dates.
Denver Philanthropist
Honored on 80th Yey
DENVER, (JTA) — President
Eisenhower, Prime Minister
David Ben-Gurion of Israel and
other leaders joined last week
in lauding Adolph Kiesler, Den
ver’s famous Jewish philan
thropist, on his 80th birthday
Mr Kiesler. who has contributed
about $1,200,000 in 17 years to
a variety of Jewish, Zionist and
general causes, was honored at
a community-wide dinner Tues
day night.
President Eisenhower said, in
his message, that Mr. Kiesler
had “in the highest American
tradition of philanthropy,” help
ed “many worthy enterprises
regardless of race, color or
creed ” Mr Ben-Gurion wel
comed Mr. Kielser’s forthcoming
visit to Israel with a United
Jewish Appeal Study Mission
and sent his “greetings and best
wishes.”

Champions Cause
of Refugees
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Brazili

Lafer, who heads his country’s
United Nations delegation, dis
cussed plans for the early re
settlement of Jewish refugees
from trouble spots throughout
the world with Murray I. Gur-
fein, president of United Hias
Service, and James P. Rice, ex
ecutive director it was reported
this week .
For more than five years, Mr.
Lafer has played a key role in
advancing Brazil’s open door
policy toward refugees of all
faiths, under the leadership of
President Juscelino Kubitschek.
During this period, approximate
ly 7,000 Jewish refugees came
to Brazil with the help of United
Hias Service.
Chemical Firm
To Build Plant
Near Haifa
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Miles
Laboratories, a leading American
Chemical firm, will biiild a
multi-million dollar plant near
Haifa for the production of
citric acid, Pinhas Sapir, Minis
ter of Trade and Industry, an
nounced here. The plant will be
finished by the end of 1961.
The plan originally was to be
kept secret but the American
firm decided a few days ago
that its Israeli subsidiary should
openly carry the company's
name in defiance of the Arab
boycott. Israel at present im
ports annually $500,000 worth of
citric acid which is a basic ma
terial in food industries and in
bromides.

Former U. of Ga. Hillel
Director Authors Book
Antioch Press, of Antioch Col
lege, has announced the publi
cation of a book, “In Search of
Religious Maturity,” by Rabbi
Alexander Feinsilver, one-time
director of Hillel at the Univer
sity of Ga According to the pub
lishers, “the book is non-sec
tarian and will provide substance
for the currently felt return to
religion. It is partially based on
talks given by Rabbi Feinsilver
over the Purdue radio station.”
Since leaving Athens, Rabbi
Feinsilver, as Hillel director,
spent three years at the Univer
sity of Connecticut, five years
at Purdue University, and has
now resumed congregational
work at the Temple Covenant
of Peace, Easton, Pa., where he
also serves as Hillel counselor at
Lafayette College.

New Book Published
NEW YORK. (WUP)—Harper
announced the publication of
“Assignment In Israel.” Written
by sixteen experts in the fields
of science, religion, the arts and
the military, the authors give
their reasons why they revisited
Israel several times after their
initial assignment there.
Among the authors are Mar
garet Mead, Bishop Pike, Waldo
Frank, Atwood Marshall. The
volume was edited by Bernard
Mandelbaum, provost of The
Jewish Theological Seminary.
