Jewish Agencies To Benefit
From United Appeal Campaign
The Jewish Social Service Fed
eration of Atlanta is a charter
member' of the Community
Cheat, which was organized in
1924 The Federation is made up
of the Jewish Family and Chil
dren's Bureau, the Atlanta Jew
ish Community Center, the Ben
Massed Dental Clinic, and the
Central Services of the Federa
tion. These agencies are partici
pants in the Community Chest
through the Federation.
The Central Services deal with
those aspects of program and
service which reflect central co
ordination and planning and
general supervision of the three
agencies mentioned above.
The Jewish Family and Chil
dren’s Bureau provides counsell
ing service and relief to Jewish
resident families and individ
uals in need. It offers temporary
aid to transients and non-resi
dents. It assists in the settle
ment of refugees and in immi
gration cases. It is the Atlanta
correspondent for out-of-town
inquiries from other agencies. It
also carries on casework with
children in their own or in
foster homes and also under
takes placement in foster homes
or in specialized institutions.
There is a schedule of fees for
those able to pay part of the
costs.
The Atlanta Jewish Commun
ity Center provides facilities for
informal education, recreation,
and leisure time activities for

Mrs. Klein is the immediate
past president of the Ladies Aux.

year as a faculty member of the
Ahavath Achim Religious School.

Elmo Ellis, WSB Radio,
To Speak on Election
Elmo Ellis, manager of WSB
Radio Station, will lead a buzz
session discussion of the na
tional election issue"! at a meet
ing of the Golda Meir Chapter
of Pioneer Women. The meet
ing will be held Tuesday, Oct.
18 at 8:00 p.m. at the Jewish
Community Center. Mr. Ellis
covered the recent Democratic
Convention in Los Angeles as
assistant to the convention man
ager.
Members and their husbands,
as well as friends, are invited
to attend Refreshments will be

a country boarding camp. It
maintains a nursery school for
children, 3 to 5 years old. It also
provides special recreational pro
grams for the aged. It carries on
a program of health and physi
cal education, including a swim
ming pool and a health club.
The Ben Massell Dental Clinic
is the successor of the Morris
Hirsch Clinic^ which was in
existence for 44 years under the
auspices of the Federation. It is
a non-sectarian clinic which
provides dental care for children
and adults referred by social
agencies and others unable to
pay. It is open to both white
and Negro patients. The eligi
bility requirements are similar
to those maintained by Grady
Memorial Hospital. Its dental
care program includes all the
aspects of dental treatment. It
maintains dental hygiene clin
ics to teach children and adults
how to take care of their teeth.
It also carries on an educational
program for school children.
Temple Sisterhood
Plans Choral Reading
The Temple Sisterhood an
nounces that Frank Wittow, di
rector of the Academy Theatre,
will hold tryouts at 10:30 Wed
nesday, Oct. 19, in the Sanctuary
of the Temple for the choral
reading to be presented for Sis
terhood Sabbath in January.
The choral reading, “Life Is
the Sound of Calling,” is an ori
ginal work by Mrs. Jacob Roths
child.
All members interested are

Ira Fein berg, Mid-East Authority,
Will Speak for Israel Bonds
Ira Feinberg, world traveler
and noted lecturer, will be the
guest of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard
Howard, at their home at 3232
Ridgewood Road, N.W., on Mon
day, Oct. 17, at 8 p.m., to address
a group of friends of the How
ards.
Mr. Feinherg is one of the
most authoritative public speak
ers on the Middle East, and in
this capacity has appeared in
many American communities in
the past few years. During the
past decade, he has traveled ex
tensively in Europe, North Af
rica and Israel, gathering mater
ial for lectures and articles.
For a number of years, Mr.
Feinberg served in Military In
telligence of the United States
Army as a translator of Arabic.
He speaks many Arabic dialects
and several foreign languages,
including Hebrew, Spanish, Ital
ian and Russian. He is a grad
uate of Queens College in New
York City.
Prior to Israel’s establishment
as a State in 1948, Mr. Feinberg
aided in bringing immigrants to
Palestine. He was present in
Israel during that country's War
of Liberation.
Mr. Feinberg recently re
turned from a fact-finding tour
of Israel, where he met key gov
ernment officials, leading indus-

trialists and top-ranking military
commanders, including General
Moshe Dayan and General Ezer
Weizmann, Commander of the
Air Force. During this trip, he
inspected many agricultural and
industrial projects and witnessed
the mineral development taking
place in the southern Negev re
gion with the aid of Israel Bonds.
The State of Israel Bond Issue
is the central source of invest
ment capital for Israel’s histone
program of economic develop
ment. Proceeds derived through
the sale of Israel Bonds are mak
ing possible the building of per
manent homes, the growth of in
dustry and agriculture, the ex
pansion of irrigation, the con
struction of roads, harbors and
railways, the increase of electric
power, and the exploitation of
natural resources.
The meeting at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Howard is one in
a series of get-togethers organ
ized by the Atlanta Israel Bond
Committee in connection with its
current campaign to sell a min
imum of $500,000 in Israel Bonds
during 1960.
Shearith Israel
Silver Tea, Oct. 17
Shearith Israel Sisterhood will
hold its annual Silver Tea on
Monday, Oct. 17 at 1:00 in the
social hall of the synagogue.
Mrs. Howard Adler, president
of the Sisterhood, announced the
program will honor new sister
hood members.
It will feature a fashion show,
"Tomorrow’s Fashions Today,"
and sisterhood members will
serve as models. A door prize
will be awarded at the close of
the meeting.
Jewish Theological Seminary Chief
To Cite 3 Distinguished Atlantans
Three distinguished leaders of
the Atlanta Jewish community
will be accorded high honors by
The Jewish Theological Semi
nary of America on Sunday, Oc
tober 23, at a dinner to be held
at Ahavath Achim Synagogue.
These outsanding figures,
prominent for many years in
philanthropy and general civic
causes in Atlanta and through
out the nation, are David L.
Slann, Abe Goldstein and Ben
J. Massell.
In recogntion of their life
long devotion to the well-being
of their fellows and their dedi
cation to many organizations
serving these causes, The Jew
ish Theological Seminary of
America will present special
awards for their “years of dis
tinguished service in enhancing
the spiritual and cultural well
being of the Jewish Commun
ity’'
A J. Weinberg, one of the
best known and highly regard
ed members of the community,
will be chairman of this import
ant event. Mr. Weinberg is vice-
chairman of the National Linen
Service Corporation, president
of the Weine Investment Corpo
ration, a past chairman of the
Israel Bond Drive, a board mem
ber of the American Jewish
Committee, a member of the
President’s Council of Brandeis
University and a state chairman
of the National Conference of
Christians and Jews.
Dr. Louis Finkelstein, chan
cellor of the Seminary and an
internationally known religious
leader and scholar, will be the
guest speaker at the dinner. He
will present the Louis Marshall
Memorial Medal to Mr. Slann,
the Community Service Award
to Mr. Massell, and the Eternal
Light Award to Mr. Goldstein.
Mr Slann, chairman of the
board of Butler’s Shoe Corpora
tion and a member of directors
of the National Association of
Shoe Chain Stores, is a member
of the Board of Overseers of
The Jewish Theological Semin
ary of America, and a recipient
of B’nai B’rith’s annual award
as “Man of the Year.” His broad
interests in every aspect of Jew
ish communal life is evidenced
by his past chairmanship of At
lanta’s United Jewish Appeal
Drive and the Israel Bond Or
ganization. Mr. Slann is a Life
Member of Brandeis University,
an ex-president of the Bureau
of Jewish Education, a member
of the board of the Jewish Com
munity Center and member of
the board of the Hebrew Aca
demy.
The Louis Marshall Memorial
Medal to be presented to Mr.
Slann is named for the famous
constitutional lawyer who de
voted his life to the cause of
brotherhood, education and Jew
ish welfare. Louis Marshall was
chairman of the Seminary’s
Board of Directors from 1904
until his death in 1929.
Mr. Massell will receive the
coveted Community Service
Award from Dr. Finkelstein for
his long, continued services to
both the local and the national
community.
President of Realty Invest
ments, Inc., Mr. Massell has re-
cevied a citation of honor from
the Atlanta City Council and a
bronze plaque from the Jewish
War Veterans. He was given a
certificate of honor for outstand
ing and distinguished leadership
by the State of Israel Bonds and
a citation of honor from the
Zionist Organization of America.
Mr. Massell has long shown a
keen interest in the field of edu
cation and is a fellow and Life
Member of Brandeis University
and a member of the National
Patrons Society of the Seminary.
Mr. Goldstein will be giveq
the Eternal Light Award to mark
his dedication to the many areas
of human relations and com
munity causes to which he has
given his counsel and his ener
gies. Mr. Goldstein is a past
president of B’nai B’rith, presi
dent of the Jewish Welfare Fund
and a past president of Ahavath
Achim Congregation of Atlanta.
He is a national commissioner of
the Anti-Defamation League of
B’nai B’rith and a recipient of
that organization’s annual “Man
of the Year” award.
Rabbi Harry H. Epstein, spirit
ual leader of Ahavath Achim
synagogue and Mr. Weinberg,
dinner chairman, will be among
the communal leaders who will
welcome Dr. Finkelstein upon
his arrival in Atlanta. Dr. Fink
elstein will be honored at a re
ception to be held in advance of
the October 23 dinner.
